The real-time scheduling algorithms based on the Insertion technique and Two-way SCAN technique (삽입기법과 양방향 스캔 기법에 기반한 실시간 디스크 스케줄링 알고리즘)

  • Recently, to increase throughput per hour on real-time disk scheduling, a lot of algorithms that apply SCAN technique to EDF(Earliest Deadline First) that is representative real-time disk scheduling algorithm are studied. However, existing disk scheduling algorithms have several limitations because they consider continuous I/O requests when create SCAN group. Also, because SCAN technique was fixed direction, the existing algorithms have shortcoming that there are a lot of time damages. This paper proposes a new real-time disk scheduling algorithm based on the insertion technique and the two-way SCAN technique to solve the problems of the exiting real-time disk scheduling algorithms in hard real-time system. The simulation result shows that, when using our techniques, the disk throughput and the number of serviceable I/O requests are enhanced.

A Two-step Disk Scheduling Scheme for Deadline Guarantee of Multimedia on Demand Server (주문형 멀티미디어 서버의 마감시간보장을 위한 2단계 디스크 스케줄링 기법)

  • The previous disk scheduling schemes for best-effort applications do not guarantee the real-time requirement of multimedia objects and the real-time disk scheduling schemes do not satisfy throughput of multimedia server. So, this paper propose a two-step disk scheduling scheme to satisfy the requirement of best-effort as well as soft real-time applications. This scheme is based on the round robin algorithm that imposes different weights on the best-effort task and the real-time one. The experiment results on the Linux kernel have shown that both best-effort tasks and real-time tasks could get fair service.

A Real-Time Disk Prefetch Scheme for Continuous Media Playback (연속매체 상영을 위한 실시간 디스크 프리팻칭 기법)

  • To play back CM (Continuous Media) in online mode, the multimedia system Is required to have a real-time disk scheduling scheme that can efficiently fulfill the strict temporal constraints of serviced CM streams to prevent hiccups. In general, such disk scheduling is performed based on the concept of periodic prefetching since a CM stream has a rather long Playback time. In this paper, we also propose a periodic prefetching scheme that runs by using real-time disk channels, called on-time delivery channels. Since the channels are generated from the bulk-SCAN algorithm and they can be allocated in a very flexible manner based on the EDF (earliest-deadline-first) algorithm, the proposed scheme provides a better Performance in terms of I/O throughput and the average response time, as well as hiccup-free playback of concurrent CM streams. To show that the proposed scheme outperforms other methods, we give some simulation results.

  • With fast advances in computing power and network technologies, online streaming services of continuous media (CM) have been popularly implemented on the Web. To implement such services, a variety of CM streams need to be processed efficiently, so that the Sweep scheme was proposed. This scheme has several advantages such as hiccup-free playbacks and seek-time optimization. In this scheme, however, the entire CM streams are scheduled with a single scheduling period, called a cycle. Since only one scheduling period is allowed in this scheme, a significant amount of disk time is usually wasted because of its inflexible disk schedules. To solve this, we propose a new dynamic Sweep scheme. For this, we devise an algorithm that is able to expand scheduling periods of serviced CM streams and propose a new admission control mechanism guaranteeing hiccup-free playbacks. To show performance gains, we execute various simulation experiments. From the experimental results, we can see that the proposed scheme outperforms the Sweep scheme in terms of disk utilization and scheduling flexibility.

Real-Time Storage and Retrieval Techniques for Continuous Media Storage Server (연속미디어 저장 서버에서의 실시간 저장 및 검색 기법)

  • In this paper, we address the issues related to storage and retrieval of continuous media (CM)data we face in designing multimedia on-demand (MOD) storage servers. To support the two orthogonal factors of MOD server design, i.e., storage and retrieval of CM data, this paper discusses the techniques of disk layout, disk striping and real-time disk scheduling, which are integrated as a combined solution to the high- performance MOD storage subsystem. The proposed clustered striping technique enables either a multiple-disk or a parallel system to guarantee a continuous retrieval of CM data at the bandwidth required to support user playback rate by avoiding the formation of I/O bottlenecks.

  • In this paepr, we present a video-on-demand (VOD) system design model that address and integrates a number of inter-related issues. Then with analysis and performance evaluation, we investigate various aspects of disk and buffer managements in the given model. Based on the analysis results, we suggest that a distributed buffering scheme with intermediate buffers may te useful to transform bursty disk accesses into a continuous stream for for glitch-free performance of VOD systems. Also, through simulation, we illustrate that massive multimedia information storage design techniques such as prefetching, clustered striping, and real-time disk scheduling integrated with the distributed buffering mechanism may enhance end-to-end real-time performance of VOD systems under wide-area networks.

  • Mobile Multimedia Storage Server should provide to store and transfer a data that the number of concurrent datum by Personal Digital Assistant(PDA) requests in real time. simultaneously. But, While the large number of a PDA request connect to MTS (Mobile Translation Storage) server with BottleNeck problem in mobile internet environment by many constraints such as limited bandwidth can be introduced. This paper introduces an optimal method of new DVDS (Dynamic Variable Disk Scheduling) for MTS server which is based on the Weight Value to solve the BottleNeck problems that occur when transfer and store capture images through mounted digital camera on the PDA in real time simultaneously. The comparison with previous research shows that the proposed scheme provides better.

  • As the areas of computer application are expanded, the real-time applicition enviroments that must process as many transactions as possible within their deadlines have been increased recently. Conventional disk based databaes system is not appropriate in real-time transaction processing due to delying time for disk I/O processing. When the system is overloaede, the performance of transaction scheduling technique using earliest deadline first deteriorates rapidly because it can assign the highest priority ot a transaction that has already missed or is about to miss tis deadline. Therfore, the performance of suggested transaction secheduling technique is made to improved by propos-ing the doule locking mechanism based on priority. Finally, in order to evaluate the performance of the proposed priority-based double locking techniques under single proessor and main memory database system environments, the simulation model was developed using the SLAM II language.

  • In a VOD(Vide-On-Demand) system, video data are generally stored in magnetic disk array. In order to provide real-time requirement for data retrieval, video streams must be delivered continuously to the clients such that the delivery of continuous media can be guaranteed in a timely fashion. Compared to the increased performance of processors and networks, the performance of magnetic disk systems have improved only modestly. In order to improve the performance of storage system, disk array system is proposed and used. The array system improves I/O performance by placing disks in parallel and retrieving data concurrently. In this paper, two approaches are considered in order to access the video data in a VOD system, which are CTL(Constant Time Length) and CDL(Constant Data Length) access policies. Disk scheduling policies are also classified into the two categories and compared in terms of the maximum allowable video streams with different degrees of disk array synchronization, under the mixed environments in which both data access policy and disk scheduling policy are considered. Among the compared scheduling policies, LOOK was shown to have the best performance. In terms of degree of disk synchronization, more gain was achieved with large degree of synchronization. In comparisons of performance of CTL and CDL, CTL was proved to have a little superior performance in terms of number of maximum allowable streams.

  • Intensive studies have been made in the area of N-VOD server Multimedia files in the N-VOD sever are characterized with the large volume of data, the requirements of synchronization and real-time playback of streams. The basic goal of the study is to find an efficient mechanism to allow maximum number of users under the limited resources such as Buffer size and disk bandwidth. we propose a efficient VCR-LIKE operations and buffer, disk scheduling policy for multimedia services with management of VOD sever resources. Simulation results show that the rate of buffer usage and service time of proposed scheme are about 18% performance improved than that of traditional methods. This implies that our method can allow much more users for given resources.
