Implementation and Test of 3-level NPC VSC-HVDC System using Hardware-in-the-Loop Simulation (Hardware-in-the-Loop Simulation을 이용한 3-레벨 NPC 전압형 HVDC 시스템 구현 및 테스트)

  • Recently, applications of VSC-HVDC systems to power systems are growing because of their control ability of reactive power. Meanwhile, the hardware-in-the-loop simulation (HILS) based on the real-time digital simulator has been applying to develop and test imbedded controllers and systems in the power industry to decrease costs and to save time. In this paper, a 3-level neutral point clamped (NPC) VSC-HVDC system is modeled and the embedded controllers of the NPC VSC-HVDC system are designed. The designed controllers are implemented by TMS320F28335. The TMS320F28335-based controllers of the NPC VSC-HVDC system are tested using the HILS.

  • In power system, the reactive power is closely associated with voltage. In addition Reactive power has localized characteristic. Recently wide area blackout caused by reactive power imbalance. Therefore it is important to control reactive power considering its characteristic. Until now maintenance of system voltage has been controlled by shunt compensation rather than generators. However because of a large time-constant, shunt compensators are difficult to manage disturbances immediately. In addition shunt compensation has discrete characteristic, which make disturbances in system. In this paper we studied the voltage maintenance method of local buses by controlling the reactive power output of a generator which is closely related a load bus in addition the proposed method was verified by test system.

  • The transformer role is very important in power system operation and control; also its price is very expensive. Therefore many kinds of the efforts for transformer protection have been executed. So for as, current differential relay(87) has been mainly used for transformer protection. But current differential relaying method has several troubles as followings. Differential current can be occurred by transformers inrush current between winding1 and winding2 of transformer when transformer is initially energized. Also harmonic restrained element used in current differential relaying method is one of the causes of relays mal-operation because recently harmonics in power system gradually increase by power switching devices(SVC, FACTS, DSC, etc). Therefore many kinds of effort have been executed to solve the trouble of current differential relay and one of them is method using ratio of increment of flux linkages(RIFL) of the primary and secondary windings. This paper introduces a novel protective relay for power transformers using RIFL of the primary and secondary windings. Novel protective relay successfully discriminates between transformer internal faults and normal operation conditions including inrush and this paper includes real time test results using RTDS(Real Time Digital Simulator) for novel protective relay. A novel protective relay was designed using the TMS320C32 digital signal processor and consisted of DSP module. A/D converter module, DI/DO module, MMI interface module and LCD display module and developed by Xelpower co., Ltd.

  • The paper describes a new and rigorous mathematical model for the rotor field oriented system with induction motor which uses the estimated speed and rotor flux based on a Model Reference Adaptive System, as well as the real-time approach. The estimated speed and rotor flux is used for the speed and flux feedback control. The stability and the convergence of the estimator are improved on the basis of hyperstability theory for non-linear systems. The real-time controller and estimator are implemented with a sampling period of $926{\mu}s$ using a dual TMS320C44 floating-point digital signal processor. The validity of the proposed method is verified by simulation, and also, the sensorless control was tested on the propulsion system simulator, used for the development of Korean High-Speed Railway Train (KHSRT) [5].

Real-Time Implementation of Shunt Active Filter P-Q Control Strategy for Mitigation of Harmonics with Different Fuzzy M.F.s

  • This research article presents a novel approach based on an instantaneous active and reactive power component (p-q) theory for generating reference currents for shunt active filter (SHAF). Three-phase reference current waveforms generated by proposed scheme are tracked by the three-phase voltage source converter in a hysteresis band control scheme. The performance of the SHAF using the p-q control strategy has been evaluated under various source conditions. The performance of the proposed control strategy has been evaluated in terms of harmonic mitigation and DC link voltage regulation. In order to maintain DC link voltage constant and to generate the compensating reference currents, we have developed Fuzzy logic controller with different (Trapezoidal, Triangular and Gaussian) fuzzy M.F.s. The proposed SHAF with different fuzzy M.F.s is able to eliminate the uncertainty in the system and SHAF gains outstanding compensation abilities. The detailed simulation results using MATLAB/SIMULINK software are presented to support the feasibility of proposed control strategy. To validate the proposed approach, the system is also implemented on a real time digital simulator and adequate results are reported for its verifications.

  • In this paper the operational characteristics of stand-alone microgrid was analyzed using RTDS simulation models. The accuracy of developed simulation models were verified by comparing with the analysis results using the PSCAD/EMTDC simulation models. The proper scenarios and operation algorithms were developed and analyzed in accordance with various situations that can occur in the actual system, so as to establish operation scheme for the stand-alone microgrid system. The developed simulation models can be effectively utilized to design a newly installed stand-alone microgrid and to develop various operation scenarios for stand-alone microgrid. And these models can be applied for analyzing the transient phenomena due to system fault so that system protection can be properly designed.

Evaluation of S-100 ECDIS Based on S-10X Digital Maritime Safety Information

  • The IMO has established a regulation for the ECDIS installation on ships based on the IHO S-57 standards. The ECDIS supports sailors in achieving a safe voyage by using ENCs and monitoring the information of their ship. However, the S-57 standards were developed as edition 3.1 and prohibited revision for more than 20 years. So, the IHO developed a new standard as S-100 into the hydrography and maritime field instead of updating the S-57 to edition 4.0. In this study, the new S-100 ECDIS was developed and verified with ENCs and the digital maritime safety information by using a ship steering simulator and by conducting an on-board sea-trial test. It evaluated the impact on ship operations if the next-generation navigation support system is introduced. Based on this research, the S-100 ECDIS will generate improvements such as safe voyages by providing various of real-time safety information and up-to-date data to ship and sailors.

  • 본 논문은 풍속이 변화하는 상황에서 풍력 발전 시스템의 동작을 실시간으로 모의할 수 있는 시뮬레이터의 구성과 실험 결과를 제시한다. 본 논문에서 제시하고자하는 풍력 발전 시스템 시뮬레이터는 실시간 시뮬레이터인 RTDS(Real Time Digital Simulator)와 11kW의 AC 서보 시스템을 포함하는 전동기-발전기 실험 장치(MG set, Motor-Generator Set)로 구현되었다. RTDS는 풍속 모델과 블레이드, 터빈, 발전기를 포함하는 풍력발전 시스템 모델을 실시간으로 모의하며 MG-set은 실시간으로 모의된 풍력 발전 시스템의 물리적 상태를 구현한다. 풍력 발전 시스템 모델의 동작점 궤적과 최대출력점추종(Maximum Power Point Tracking)제어에 의한 풍력 발전 시스템 시뮬레이터의 운전 결과의 제시를 통해 시뮬레이터의 유용성을 검증하였다. 본 논문에서 제시된 시뮬레이터는 상용 실시간 시뮬레이터를 이용하여 간단한 소프트웨어의 수정을 통해 다양한 모델의 풍력 반전 시스템을 모의할 수 있으며 다양한 실험 조건에서 과도상태 및 정상상태 특성 실험이 가능하므로 풍력 발전 시스템의 발전기 특성 평가, 전력 변환 장치의 성능 시험 등에 활용이 가능하다.

  • In order to verify the efficiency or availability and stability of photovoltaic(PV) generation systems, huge system apparatuses are needed, in general, in which an actual size of solar panel, a type of converter system and some amount of load facilities should be installed in a particular location. It is also hardly possible to compare a Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) control scheme with others under the same weather and load conditions in an actual PV generation system. The only and a possible way to bring above-mentioned problem to be solved is to realize a transient simulation scheme for PV generation systems using real weather conditions such as insolation and surface temperature of solar cell. The authors, in this paper, introduces a novel simulation method, which is based on a real-time digital simulator (RTDS), for PV generation systems under the real weather conditions. Firstly, VI characteristic equation of a solar cell is developed as an empirical formula and reconstructed in the RTDS system, then the real data of weather conditions are interfaced to the analogue inputs of the RTDS. The outcomes of the simulation demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed simulation scheme in this paper. The results shows that the cost effective verifying for the efficiency or availability and stability of PV generation systems and the comparison research of various control schemes like MPPT under the same real weather conditions are possible.

  • The typical evacuation guidance system based on fire detectors, which is being widely used in theaters and large buildings, is often operated in an analog manner. In case of fire, it often causes the system to lose a wired line or wireless fire detection sensor, resulting in the difficulty of transmitting signals from a wired or wireless fire detection sensor to the main fire monitoring device. Accordingly, this paper has proposed the broadcasting system for disaster management, having an efficient evacuation guidance plan when a disaster occurs. The system reacts to an emergency situation along with fire alarm sirens in real time. We have implemented the above system by means of a simulation program that prints the evacuation guidance information (e.g., location and time of fire, and evacuation path) on an LCD located in a building through the fire sensor network in case of an emergency (e.g., actual fire). We have developed the simulation system by using mathematical algorithms, such as the optimal path search and the fire smoke diffusion algorithm. This simulation program considers the structure of a building and the location where the fire has initially occurred, applying it to the simulator.
