  • This paper discusses about real time control applying sliding mode to robot manipulators whose nonlinear terms, which are inertia term, Corilis term and centrifugal force mterm, are regarded as disturbances. We could simplify the dynamic equations of a manipulator and servo system, which are composed of linear elements and nonlinear elements, by assuming that non-linear terms are external disturbance. By simplifying that equation, we could easily obtain a control input which satisfy sliding mode. We proposed a new control input algorithm to decrease chattering in the application of sliding mode control of manipulator whose nonlinear elements are regarded as disturbances. We could take impulse response of linear elements of dynamic equations of a robot manipulator and servo system by Signal Compression Method. So then, we could obtain the unknown parametes of its linear lements, which are used to obtain switching parameter satisfying sliding mode, by Signal Compression Method. In this experiments, we used DSP(Digital Signal Processor) controller to suppress chattering by obtaining a switching speed and to carry out real time control.

  • If the on-line cutting conditions (e.g. speed, feedrate, radial and axal depth of cuts) can be identified in an end milling process, much information about cutting forces will be estimated from the cutting force model. Therefore, those estimated conditions can be applied to monitoring and control areas. In this paper, a real-time estimation algorithm for radial and axial depth of cuts is studied in end milling using the averaging cutting forces per tooth. The analytical estimation models of depth of cuts are derived from the geometric cutting force model. The validity of the estimation models is verified on a horizontal machining center through the experiments in various cutting conditions.

  • This paper presents a myoelectric hand prosthesis(MHP) with two degree of freedom(2-DOF), which consists of a mechanical hand, a surface myoelectric sensor(SMES) for measuring myoelectric signal, a control system and a charging battery. The actuation for the 2-DOF hand functions such as grasping and wrist rotation was performed by two DC-motors, and controlled by myoelectric signal measured from the residual forearm muscle. The grip force of the MHP was automatically changed by a mechanical automatic speed reducer mounted on the hand. The skin interface of SMES was composed of the electrodes using the SUS440 metal in order to endure a wet condition due to the sweat. The sensor was embedded with a amplifier and a filter circuit for rejecting the offset voltage caused by power line noises. The control system was composed of the grip force sensor, the slip sensor, and the two controllers. The two controllers were made of a RISC-type microprocessor, and its software was executed on a real-time kernel. The control system used Force Sensing Resistors, FSR, as slip pick-ups at the fingertip of a thumb and the grip force information was obtained from a strain-gauge on the lever of the MHP. The experimental results were showed that the proposed control system is feasible for the MHP.

  • This paper presents in-process compensation methodology to eliminate cutter runout and improve machined surface quality. The cutter runout compensation system consists of the micro-positioning mechanism with the PZT (piezo-electric translator) which is embeded in the sliding table to manipulate the radial depth of cut in real time. For the implementation of cutter runout compensation methodology. cutting force adaptive control was proposed in the angle domain based upon PI (proportional-integral) control strategy to eliminate chip-load change in end milling process. Micro-positioning control due to adaptive acuation force response improves the machined surface quality by compensation or elimination of cutter runout induced cutting force variation. This results will provide lots of information to build-up the precision machining technology.

  • The thermal-hydraulic model ARTS which was based on the RETRAN-3D code adopted in the domestic full-scope power plant simulator which was provided in 1998 by KEPRI. Since ARTS is a generalized code to model the components with control volumes, the smaller time-step size should be used even if converged solution could not get in a single volume. Therefore, dedicated models which do not force to reduce the time-step size are sometimes more suitable in terms of a real-time calculation and robustness. In the case of PRT(Pressurizer Relief Tank) model, it is consist of subcooled water in bottom and non-condensable gas in top. The sparger merged under subcooled water enhances condensation. The complicated thermal-hydraulic phenomena such as condensation, phase separation with existence of non-condensable gas makes difficult to simulate. Therefore, the PRT volume can limit the time-step size if we model it with a general control volume. To prevent the time-step size reduction due to convergence failure for simulating this component, we developed a dedicated model for PRT. The dedicated model was expected to provide substantially more accurate predictions in the analysis of the system transients. The results were resonable in terms of accuracy, real-time simulation, robustness and education of operators, complying with the ANSI/ANS-3.5-1998 simulator software performance criteria and RETRAN-3D results.

  • In this paper, we propose a new deformable model based on non-linear elasticity, anisotropic behavior and the finite element method and developed the high-speed controller for haptic control. The proposed controller is based on the PCI/FPGA technology, which can calculate the real position and transmit the force data to device rapidly, The haptic system is composed of 6DOF force display device, high-speed controller and HIR library for 3D graphic deformation algorithm & haptic rendering algorithm. The developed system will be used on constructing the dynamical virtual environment. we demonstrate the relevance of this approach for the real-time simulating deformations of elastic objects. To show the efficiency of our system, we designed simulation program of force-reflecting, As the result of the experiment, we found that the controller has much higher resolution than some other controllers.

  • Magnetorheological (MR) damper is a type of controllable device widely used in vibration mitigation. This device is highly nonlinear, and exhibits strongly hysteretic behavior that is dependent on both the motion imposed on the device and the strength of the surrounding electromagnetic field. An accurate model for understanding and predicting the nonlinear damping force of the MR damper is crucial for its control applications. The MR damper models are often identified off-line by conducting regression analysis using data collected under constant voltage. In this study, a MR damper model is integrated with a model for the power supply unit (PSU) to consider the dynamic behavior of the PSU, and then a real-time nonlinear model updating technique is proposed to accurately identify this integrated MR damper model with the efficiency that cannot be offered by off-line methods. The unscented Kalman filter is implemented as the updating algorithm on a cyber-physical model updating platform. Using this platform, the experimental study is conducted to identify MR damper models in real-time, under in-service conditions with time-varying current levels. For comparison purposes, both off-line and real-time updating methods are applied in the experimental study. The results demonstrate that all the updated models can provide good identification accuracy, but the error comparison shows the real-time updated models yield smaller relative errors than the off-line updated model. In addition, the real-time state estimates obtained during the model updating can be used as feedback for potential nonlinear control design for MR dampers.

  • Frictional dampers are used in structural engineering as means of passive control. Meanwhile, frictional damper shave a disadvantage compared to viscous rivals since the slippage force must be exceeded to activate the device, and cannot be ideal full range of possible events. The concept of semi-active control is utilized to overcome this shortcoming. In this paper, a new semi-active frictional damper called Smart Adjustable Frictional (SAF) damper is introduced. SAF damper consists of hydraulic, electronic units and sensors which are all linked with an active control discipline. SAF acts as a smart damper which can adapt its slippage threshold during a dynamic excitation by measuring and controlling the structural response. The novelty of this damper is, while it controls the response of the structure in real time with acceptable time delay. The paper also reports on the results of a series of experiments which have been performed on SAF dampers to obtain their prescribed hysteretic behavior for various control algorithms. The results show that SAF can produce the desired slippage load of various algorithms in real time. Numerical models incorporating control simulations are also made to obtain the hysteretic response of the system which agrees closely with test results.
