  • It has been shown that in the modern society, teenagers do not read a lot of books. As basic research in order to attract teenagers to reading activities, the effectiveness of booktrailers in affecting reading motivation of teenagers has been studied. As such, 121 middle school and high school students were surveyed with respect to their (1) basic awareness of reading and booktrailers, (2) awareness thereof after watching booktrailers, and (3) reader behaviour reaction applied to AIDMA & AISAS sub-elements. Results show booktrailers to be much more effective in reading motivation than printed media such as book reviews. The preferred booktrailer type is the storyline type. The preferred elements of booktrailers are the storyline, background music, video effects, with their preference in descending order. Also, in terms of the reader behaviour reaction of the teenagers, very positive responses appear across all areas including attention and interest in the book, memories of the book, desire to read the book, search for information, and production of booktrailers. These results indicate that booktrailers can be utilized very effectively in providing reading motivation and in reading expression activities.

  • This study compares the members of children's reading and culture movement organization versus general public and their children with the aim of understanding how parents' reading activities affect children's reading activities. The study surveyed 477 elementary school students and 483 parents from five special metropolitan cities regarding their reading behaviour. Reading behavior was investigated in terms of reading frequency, book selection information source, reading awareness, and preferred books, and it was confirmed that there was a difference between members of children's reading and culture movement organization and children of the general public. Members of children's reading and culture movement organization and their children showed superior reading habits in terms of both quantity and quality than non-members and their children, and the book selection information service was used. In terms of perception regarding reading, children's reading and culture movement organization members and their children found more "joy" in reading than "help in learning" as compared to the general public and their children. In terms of reading preference, children's reading and culture movement organization members and their children intensively preferred Korean creative fairy tales and picture books while the general public and their children preferred Korean creative fairy tales, picture books, and educational comics. In order to create a healthier reading culture and environment for the long term, the development of more active reading participation methods for the general public is required.

  • Deformation behaviour of rock mass around an opening measured during tunnel excavation is very important in order to assess the stability of the tunnel. Unfortunately displacement measured only after the installation of displacement measuring device can be acquired, which results in inevitably excluding the pre-displacement occurred and accumulated before the displacement measuring devices are installed. So it is very important to consider the pre-displacement based on the elapsed time before zero reading after deformation behaviour started. In this study, the accuracy of total estimated displacement depending on the distance between face and measurement position is calculated by statistical non-linear fitting on measurable displacement data. Besides, the influence of the unavoidable measurement error is considered by using Monte-Carlo simulation. As a result, the faster the initial reading started and the smaller the measurement error is, the higher the accuracy of estimating total displacement is obtained.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the tourists' circulations and behaviors at one of the representative dark tourism sites in Seoul, named Seodaemun Prison History Hall. This study conducts direct observation and behaviour tracking or follow-up survey based on traffic circulation and visitors' Muse-Ethogram extracted from the previous studies. The result of tourists' actual circulations shows that main tourists' flows of study areas consist of 3 approaches; suggested, unstructured and directed approaches. And tourists' behaviors such as moving(M), stop looking(SL), and reading(RE) reveal with the highest frequency. This study finds the 'expressing feeling(EXP)' as a new visitor' behavior in dark tourism site. The highest frequency of visitors' movement patterns is stop looking-reading-move(SL-RE-M). The results of this study could be used as a planning and design guidelines of dark tourism related to exhibition circulation, visitors' behaviors and development of exhibition content.

  • Objective : This study is planned to determine the neurocognitive difficulties of hydrocephalic adults. Methods : The research group contained healthy adults (control group, n : 15), and hydrocephalic adults (n : 15). Hydrocephalic group consisted of patients with idiopathic aquaduct stenosis and post-meningitis hydrocephalus. All patients were followed with shunted hydrocephalus and not gone to shunt revision during last two years. They were chosen from either asymptomatic or had only minor symptoms without motor and sensorineural deficit. A neuropsychological test battery (Raven Standart Progressive Matrices, Bender-Gestalt Test, Cancellation Test, Clock Drawing Test, Facial Recognition Test, Line Orientation Test, Serial Digit Learning Test, Stroop Color Word Interference Test-TBAG Form, Verbal Fluency Test, Verbal Fluency Test, Visual-Aural Digit Span Test-B) was applied to all groups. Results : Neuropsychological assessment of hydrocephalic patients demonstrated that they had poor performance on visual, semantic and working memory, visuoconstructive and frontal functions, reading, attention, motor coordination and executive function of parietal lobe which related with complex and perseverative behaviour. Eventually, these patients had significant impairment on the neurocognitive functions of their frontal, parietal and temporal lobes. On the other hand, the statistical analyses performed on demographic data showed that the aetiology of the hydrocephalus, age, sex and localization of the shunt (frontal or posterior parietal) did not affect the test results. Conclusion : This prospective study showed that adult patients with hydrocephalus have serious neuropsychological problems which might be directly caused by the hydrocephalus; and these problems may cause serious adaptive difficulties in their social, cultural, behavioral and academic life.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the trends of qualitative research in four representative journals in Korean LIS from 1970 to 2016. 73 papers(1.4%) were analyzed focusing on publication year, subject areas, research purposes, authors, qualitative methods, research participants, data collection methods, data analysis methods, and methods of validation. The findings are as follows: 1) Information behaviour(39.7%) was the most researched topics, followed by librarians work(20.5%), and bibliotherapy & reading education(13.6%). 2) The most frequently used research purpose was for understanding experiences(60.2%) and for improving current state(30.1%). 3) 'Grounded theory'(13.6%) and 'phenomenology'(10.9%), 'case study'(10.9%), were used frequently, while 'non-specified qualitative method' was 26.0% and 'not indicated' was 21.9%. 4) Librarians (41.0%) were the most researched participants, followed by professionals(13.6%). To collect qualitative data, in-depth interview(20.5%), interview(13.6%), and in-depth interview & internal documents(9.5%) were frequently used. There are 'loose qualitative research' group and 'scientific qualitative research' group. LIS researchers using qualitative research methods should consistently make efforts to increase qualitative theory and the philosophical assumptions, and to apply rigorous research method (data collection, analysis and interpretation, sampling, data saturation, validity and reliability). Institutionally, It is to provide 'qualitative research methods' course and to develop guidelines and standards for LIS qualitative research authors and reviewers.

  • The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of sex education on knowledge and attitude related to sex. The subjects were taken from by 199 students in 3 classes from 1st grade in H girl's junior high school as the study group, and 2 classes from 1st grade in S girl's junior high school as control group. During the survey period(September 21, 1998 to September 30, 1998), 6 times in terms of one-hour class for sex education were taught to the study group. A pre-test was executed on September 19, 1998 and the post-test on September 30. The findings were as follows. 1. According to the research, 20.1% of the subjects have experienced sex education from parents and 89.9% from teacher. They have mostly obtained the sex-related information from teachers(59.8%), following movie, radio, TV, or video tape(40.7%), friends(35.2%), reading materials such as books, cartoons, news papers and magazines(31.7%), parents(15.6%), siblings(7.0%), PC(1.5%) and telephone service(1.5%). 2. 27.1% of the subjects reported that they had sex-related worry concerning from friendship with the opposite sex, following physiological phenomenon(31.5%), sex violence(11.1%), physical characteristics(7.4%), VD and contraception(5.6%), sexual impulse(5.6%), pregnancy and delivery(5.5%), and sexual behaviour(3.7%). The research showed that the adolescents usually solved their problems through the consultation with theifriends(44.4%). However, 16.7% of the subjects were turned out not to request any solution. The other minor routes to settle their problems were written materials such as books, magazines(13.0%), parents(13.0%), movie, radio, TV, or video tape(5.5%), acquainted female elders(3.7%) and teachers(3.7%). 3. The most interesting part regarding sex was the friendship with the opposite sex(61.8%), following adolescent's emotion(55.8%), physiological differences between two genders(52.8%), AIDS(48.7%), VD(46.7%), pregnancy(45.2%), contraception(45.2%), abortion(41.7%), intercourse(41.7%), masturbation(41.2%), sex violence(41.2%) and genital structure and secondary sexual characteristics(28.6%). 4. In regard to characteristics of the subjects influencing sex-related knowledge, the higher educational career of mother, living with at least either parent and the experience of sex education by teachers were statistically significant factors(p〈0.05). 5. In regard to characteristics of the subjects influencing attitudes toward sex, the experience of sex education by parents or teachers was a statistically significant factor(p〈0.05). 6. The analysis of knowledge score comparing results before and after sex education showed that control group's score decreased from 12.5 to 12.44 while the study group's score increased from 12.33 to 21.31, which was statistically significant(p〈0.001). 7. The analysis of the attitude scores before and after sex education showed that the control group's score slightly increased from 55.57 to 56.36, while the study group's score increased from 54.79 to 61.95, which was statistically significant(p〈0.001). 8. The level of sex-related concerns of the study group after sex education marked both the increase in some items and the decrease in others. 9. Most instructive session among the sex education was the third “to be a good friend to the opposite sex”(27.0%).
