  • In this paper, we present the design and measurement of a side-fed circularly-polarized patch antenna with a dielectric loading. The antenna consists of a comer-truncated rectangular patch, an L-shaped ground plane, a dielectric loading material, and a coaxial probe. An antenna operating at the UHF band (910 MHz) for the RFID reader applications is optimized using a commercial software. The size of the patch is reduced by a factor of 1.73 by loading the patch with mono-cast(MC) nylon. Measurements of the fabricated antenna show performance characteristics comparable to those of much larger commercial RFID reader antennas.

  • A design of circular polarized(CP) microstrip antenna with a fenced ground is proposed and the equivalent circuit is derived. The antenna consists of a square radiating patch with a pair of truncated comers, a bottom ground and a fenced ground. From conducted experiments, a patch size reduction using the metal fence as large as 25% from the conventional patch structure, has been obtained. The input admittance of the extracted equivalent circuit is shown to agree with that of the measurement. And the design parameters and performance of the proposed antenna are examined by analyzing the fields and circuit behaviors.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel structure of a spiral antenna with a CP characteristic for RFID reader in UHF band. Since the proposed antenna can be built by printing on a FR-4 substrate, it is appropriate for low-cost mass-production. The antenna is designed to operate in UHF band of $860{\sim}960$ MHz. The CP bandwidth is Increased enough to cover an overall UHF RFID band by using a spiral structure for the antenna arm. The matching bandwidth is broadened by using a quarter-wave transformer between the fred and the antenna body. The proposed antenna has advantages of its easy gain and pattern control with a small antenna size. The measured antenna performance shows the matching bandwidth of 13%, the CP bandwidth of 23%, and the gain of 6.5 dBi. This verifies that the proposed antenna is appropriate for RFID antennas in UHF band.

  • Incorrect deployment of RFID readers occurs reader-to-reader interferences in many applications using RFID technologies. Reader-to-reader interference occurs when a reader transmits a signal that interferes with the operation of another reader, thus preventing the second reader from communicating with tags in its interrogation zone. Interference detected by one reader and caused by another reader is referred to as a reader collision. In RFID systems, the reader collision problem is considered to be the bottleneck for the system throughput and reading efficiency. In this paper, we propose a novel RFID reader anti-collision algorithm based on evolutionary algorithm(EA). First, we analyze characteristics of RFID antennas and build database. Also, we propose EA encoding algorithm, fitness algorithm and genetic operators to deploy antennas efficiently. To show superiority of our proposed algorithm, we simulated our proposed algorithm. In the result, our proposed algorithm obtains 95.45% coverage rate and 10.29% interference rate after about 100 generations.

  • This paper reports the design of RFID reader antennas working in UHF band. The reader antennas were designed using a Pareto Genetic Algorithm(Pareto GA). Antennas were optimized to have circular polarization(CP) with less than 3 dB axial ratio, impedance matching with less than VSWR=2 within the frequency range of UHF, an adequate readable range, a restricted size(kr<2.22) considering the practical condition. After Pareto GA optimization, we selected and built the most suitable antenna design and compared the measured results to the simulations. Operating principle of the antenna was explained by investigating the amplitude and the phase of the induced current on the antenna body. We also researched the stability of the antenna with respect to the manufacturing error and studied the critical design parameters by applying the random error method on the antenna bent points.

  • This study proposes the optimization and numerical analysis of the antenna circuit for antenna design with 13.56 MHz as transmitting wireless power, for calculating the dose radiation exposure to the real time. The 13.56 MHz of the antenna frequency bands is used to the loop antenna which is a induced current for transmitting the power with wireless the reader to the tag. The study compared to the real measurement value as calculating the value of the inductance and capacitance through the numerical analysis for the antenna LC resonance using the theory of the electromagnetic induction method. We tried to search for the resonance point as the voltages of both sides of antenna coil by the scope measures of the peak point, as we tried to be variable the resonance capacitor for the optimization tuning of the antenna circuit and the matching of the antenna port. We convince our research contributes to help the design and application technology of the wireless power transmit system which is received power supply with wireless.

The proposed antenna is consist of microstrip patch antenna with dual feeding and two SPDT switches and a SP4T switch and 3dB hybrid coupler. Through control of voltage of switches, the proposed reader antenna can select horizontally linear polarization, vertically linear polarization, left-hand circular polarization (LHCP) and right hand circular polarization (RHCP). The proposed reader antenna satisfied 2:1 VSWR at 902MHz~928MHz. and it has under 3dB AR(axial ratio). Peak gain of antenna is 7.71dBi, 7.55dBi with linear polarization and 7.31dBic, 7.81dBic with circular polarization at x-y plane. Also Axial ratio of antenna is 2.01~2.83dB and 2.02~2.60dB respectively. It is satisfied 3dB axial ratio.

  • In this research, a slotted patch antenna sensor is designed for wireless strain and crack sensing. An off-the-shelf RFID (radiofrequency identification) chip is adopted in the antenna sensor design for signal modulation. The operation power of the RFID chip is captured from wireless reader interrogation signal, so the sensor operation is completely battery-free (passive) and wireless. For strain and crack sensing of a structure, the antenna sensor is bonded on the structure surface like a regular strain gage. Since the antenna resonance frequency is directly related with antenna dimension, which deforms when strain occurs on the structural surface, the deformation/strain can be correlated with antenna resonance frequency shift measured by an RFID reader. The slotted patch antenna sensor performance is first evaluated through mechanics-electromagnetics coupled simulation. Extensive experiments are then conducted to validate the antenna sensor performance, including tensile and compressive strain sensing, wireless interrogation range, and fatigue crack sensing.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel hybrid reader antenna using a triangular and rectangular sub-patch for near- and far-field RFID reader in UHF band. The antenna operates at 912 MHz, and the low-cost mass-production is available, since the antenna can be built by printing on a FR-4 substrate. The triangular patch is designed to produce a circularly polarized radiation along the bore-sight direction and the rectangular sub-patch is designed to generate a strong magnetic field over the antenna aperture. The measurement shows Hz field greater than -25 dBA/m(3 cm above the antenna aperture), and exhibits circularly polarized radiation(AR<3 dB) with a radiation gain of 6 dBi.
