There is an increasing incidence in health problems related to environmental issues that originate from inadequate treatment of sewage. This has compelled scientists to engage in innovative technologies to achieve a effective disinfection process. Electrolysis has emerged as one of the more feasible alternatives to conventional disinfection process. The objectives of the present paper were to investigate the effect of chemical characteristics on oxidant formation and Escherichia coli (E. coli) disinfection in synthetic sewage effluents. The influence of parameters such as COD, SS, T-N and T-P were investigated using laboratory scale batch reactor. The results showed that the higher COD, T-N and T-P concentration, the lower N, N-Dimethyl-4-nitrosoaniline (RNO, indicator of the generation of OH radical) degradation and E. coli disinfection was observed. The order of effect of RNO degradation and E. coli disinfection was T-P > COD > T-N > SS. When 4 parameter of water quality were worked simultaneously, oxidants formation and disinfection was decreased with increase of the concentration of sewage. To increase of the disinfection performance, the increase of disinfection time or electric power was need.
Objectives: This experiment was carried out to elucidate the effect of discharged water on the disinfection of $Phytophthora$$capsici$ and evaluate the water characteristics. Methods: The dielectric barrier discharges (DBD) plasma reactor system used in this study consisted of a plasma component [discharge, ground electrode and quartz dielectric tube], high voltage source, and air supply. The effects of water characteristics such as pH, ORP and conductivity and the disinfection effect of discharged water were investigated. Results: Experimental results showed that in the process of discharge, the pH decreased, whereas ORP and electric conductivity increased. When the discharge time was 30 min, $Phytophthora$$capsici$ of 2.94 log was disinfected within 300 seconds. Disinfection performance of stored discharged water was maintained for three days; however the disinfection effect vanished after five days. When $Phytophthora$$capsici$ was injected into the discharged water, the disinfection effect decreased after two days. Conclusions: It is considered that the main disinfection parameters of the discharged water were chemically active species such as $H_2O_2$ and $O_3$ and high ORP.
The effectiveness of a UV(ultra violet) disinfection system depends on the characteristics of the waste water, flow conditions, the intensity of UV radiation, the amount of time the microorganisms are exposed to the radiation, and the reactor configuration. The wast water flow conditions are important factors in the design of UV disinfection system from the point of enhancement view of UV disinfection. The turbulent energy intensity in the wake by the vortex shedding are effective for UV radiation. Therewith the effectiveness of vortex generator is considered as a enhancement of UV disinfection. The experimental results presented give important evidences and explain that it is possible to predict UV disinfection performance based on flow experiments. An experimental investigation of two types of the vortex generator is presented. The qualitative and quantitative evaluations of the wake are made by flow visualization using smoke wire method and the measurement of vortex frequencies in the wind tunnel. From the experiment, following results were obtained that the delta wing type vortex generator is more effective than circular type because of the higher vortex frequencies and the smaller drag.
Chlorine has strong oxidizing power, also it is many advantages over other disinfectants such as the residual characteristic and economic feasibility. However, chlorine also has disadvantages such as creating disinfection by-products of chlorine as THMs. In particular, the most deadly disadvantage of chlorine is that it is extremely poisonous toxins about all alive lives. Disinfection with electrolysis water can be a very useful way Because you do not have to worry about chlorine's dangerous. In this study, we evaluated the potential as a disinfectant, across the evaluating disinfection effect and generating characteristic of by-products. The electrolyzed water could be obtained removal efficiencies of over 99.9 % the coliform by operating condition such as residence time, current density (voltage), the electrode gap. The residual chlorine be generated 10,000 mg/L in current density $1.0A/dm^2$ and residence time of 10 minutes. The residual chlorine concentration was possible to maintain a stable. The by-products generated by high concentration residual chlorine in the reactor such as trihalomethanes, haloaceticacid, chloralhydrate, haloacetonitrile were detected in less than a water quality standards. At the concentration of less than residual chlorine of 1 ppm, the chlorine disinfection by-products be generated most below the detection limit.
A dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma reactor was investigated for the inactivation of Ralstonia Solanacearum which causes bacterial wilt in aquiculture. The DBD plasma reactor of this study was divided into power supply unit, gas supply unit and plasma reactor. The plasma reactor consisted of a quartz dielectric tube, discharge electrode (inner) and ground electrode (outer). The experimental results showed that the optimum 1st voltage, 2nd voltage, air flow rate and pH were for 100 V (1st voltage), 15 kV (2nd voltage), 4 L/min, and pH 3, respectively. At a low 1st voltage, shoulder and tailing off phenomena was observed. The shoulder phenomenon was decreased as the increase of 1st voltage. R. Solanacearum disinfection in the lower air flow rate was showed shoulder and tailing off phenomenon because the active species generated less. Under optimum condition, shoulder and tailing off phenomenon was reduced. When the 2nd voltage was less than 7.5 kV, tailing off phenomenon was observed and this was not vanishes even though the increase of the disinfection time. The inactivation efficiency increased as the increase of air flow rate, however, the efficiency decreased when the air flow rate was above 4 L/min. R. Solanacearum disinfection at pH 3 showed somewhat higher than in pH 11. The pH effect of R. Solanacearum deactivation is less than the impact on other factor.
We studied the ozone concentrations generated by low-temperature dielectric barrier discharge plasma reactor after adding air and phytoplankton to control the ozone concentrations in seawater. We also examined the numbers of bacteria and Vibrio spp. after treatment using the plasma reactor. As the airflow rate was increased, more ozone was removed. Although marked variation in the ozone decrease was observed with and without airflow, the rate of ozone removal did not increase proportionately with the airflow rates. The ozone concentration decreased with increasing organic matter and time. The amount of organic matter seems to be an important factor decreasing the dissolved ozone concentration in liquid. The ozone concentration was 0.07, 0.32, 1.28, and 2.3 mg/L when operating the plasma reactor for 30, 60, 180, and 300 s, respectively; i.e., the ozone concentration increased with the reactor operating time. The initial numbers of bacteria and Vibrio spp. were 800 and 480 CFU/mL, respectively. After operating the plasma reactor at a flow rate of 6 L/min for 30 s, no bacteria or Vibrio spp. were detected. The disinfection effect of this plasma reactor seems to be superior to that of a conventional ozone generator.
This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of water quality of cooling tower on Legionella pneumophila disinfection using Ru/Ti electrode. The influences of parameters such as pH, turbidity, $CaCO_3$ and TOC were investigated using laboratory scale batch reactor. Oxidants such as free Cl, $ClO_2,\;H_2O_2\;and\;O_3$ were measured. The results showed that all of the water quality parameters of cooling tower had deteriorated disinfection of Legionella pneumophila. When the turbidity, $CaCO_3$ and TOC was increased, oxidants which was generated during electrolysis was decreased. pH, free Cl, $ClO_2\;and\;H_2O_2$ concentration were decreased with the increase of pH, whereas $O_3$ concentration was increased with the increase of pH. The order of effect of water quality on the disinfection performance for Legionella pneumophila was turbidity > $CaCO_3$ > TOC > pH. To obtain the safety standard (1000 CFU/L), the simultaneous increase current and NaCl dosage was needed.
The application of disinfection models on the plasma process was investigated. Nine empirical models were used to find an optimum model. The variation of parameters in model according to the operating conditions (first voltage, second voltage, air flow rate, pH) were investigated in order to explain the disinfection model. In this experiment, the DBD (dielectric barrier discharge) plasma reactor was used to inactivate Ralstonia Solanacearum which cause wilt in tomato plantation. Optimum disinfection models were chosen among the nine models by the application of statistical SSE (sum of squared error), RMSE (root mean sum of squared error), $r^2$ values on the experimental data using the GInaFiT software in Microsoft Excel. The optimum model was shown as Weibull+talil model followed by Log-linear+ Shoulder+Tail model. Two models were applied to the experimental data according to the variation of the operating conditions. In Weibull+talil model, Log10($N_o$), Log10($N_{res}$), ${\delta}$ and p values were examined. And in Log-linear+Shoulder+Tail model, the Log10($N_o$), Log10($N_{res}$), $k_{max}$, Sl values were calculated and examined.
Disinfection of pathogenic protozoa Giardia has been done by using $TiO_2$ prepared by hydrothermal process. $TiO_2$ suspended in a photoreactor or immobilized on the optical-fiber surface immersed in a photoreactor has been applied with the ultraviolet light. It has been shown that disinfection effect with $TiO_2/UV$ system 2 times as that with only the UV light and disinfection capability of Giardia increased with an increased $TiO_2$ concentration up to 0.1g/L in a $suspended-TiO_2$ reactor.
