  • In this study, a reactive emulsifier with vinyl groups was synthesized by using 3-butenoic acid and polyoxyethylene(20) stearyl ether. The synthesized reactive emulsifier was confirmed by FT-IR and $^1H-NMR$. In addition, the reactive emulsifier synthesized in the preparation of aqueous acrylic pressure sensitive adhesives was used and the properties of the respective pressure sensitive adhesives were compared to those of using commonly used nonionic emulsifiers. The solid content was measured in the range of 56.8~57.4%. In the case of the initial adhesion, the S20BA made with a reactive emulsifier was measured as $^{\sharp}13$. Peel strengths of the prepared adhesives were measured in the range of $0.66{\sim}1.05kg_f$ and the highest peel strength was observed for S20BA. As a result of the heat resistance test, S20BA showed the highest as $840^{\circ}C$. In order to evaluate the applicability of adhesives for skin, the pH value was measured as 7, neutral and also it was found to be non-irritation from primary skin irritation test results.

  • Na-bentonite (local clay mineral) and Na-montmorillonite were treated with quaternary alkylammonium cations. The effect of the molecular structure and functional groups of the surfactants on the organoclays was investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD). For the preparation of nanocomposites, organoclays were melt-blended with polypropylene in a twin screw extruder and $Surlyn^{(R)$. ionomer was used as a reactive compatibilizer. The clay dispersions in the composites were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD). XRD spectra showed no peak at low angle indicated that the silicate clay layer has a nearly exfoliated dispersion in the polymer matrix. Thermal and mechanical properties of nanocomposites were higher than those of PP.

  • Three types dyeing wastewater (dark, medium, light color) discharged from cotton textile dyeing with reactive dye was collected at each step of process. Each process dying wastewater was analyzed and treated by ionized gas. The analysis focused on $COD_{Cr}$, SS and color. Bleaching & scouring process wastewater has the highest $COD_{Cr}$ value in the three type dyeing wastewater. SS shows the highest value at dyeing process wastewater in dark and medium color but light color has at finishing process wastewater. The result of process wastewater treatment by ionized gas was that the ionized gas was effective in $COD_{Cr}$ removing of bleaching & scouring process and finishing process wastewater but was not good at dyeing process wastewater. From that result it is estimated that the ionized gas could not work in opening the aromatic ring and react only in aliphatic component of the molecule. Because the surfactants contained in bleaching & scouring process and finishing process wastewater have only one aromatic ring in its molecular structure, in contrast with the reactive dye compounds consist of aromatic rings great part of its molecular structure. The color almost removed in 1.5 hrs reaction time but $COD_{Cr}$ removal effiency was only 30.7% through 3hrs in 1500 mL of total dyeing wastewater treated by 10 L/min ionized gas.

  • To increase of surface hydrophilicity of polymeric thin films is an important approaching technique for introduction of self-cleaning and/or antifogging properties on the surfaces of those films. In general, hydrophilic surface can be produced by coating non ionic surfactants or by increasing surface energy. Various non-ionic surfactants, such as Tween, Span, and PEG-PPG block copolymers were selected for our experiments, because they are cheap and well soluble in toluene system as well as they contain several reactive hydroxy fuctional groups with coupling agents. Blending conditions influence the PET film surface hydrophilicities. However, the introduction of only these surfactants on the surface of PET films did not show the high durability of hydrophilic properties after washing with water. To improve the durability two types of coupling agents such as epoxide and diisocyanate were adopted. Contact angle of water on hydrophilically coated PET film surface with 6 wt% of isophrone diisocyanate(IPDI) containing coating solution was reached to $8.7^{\circ}$, which was an indirect evidence for very high surface hydrophilicity. A light(500 nm of wavelength) transmittance value of coated PET film was changed only from 87% to 85% with keeping a good transparent property. This film can be usable for self-cleaning film industries.

  • With the rapid developments in nanotechnology, an increasing number of nanomaterials have been applied in various aspects of our lives. Recently, pharmaceutical nanotechnology with numerous advantages has growingly attracted the attention of many researchers. Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) are nanomaterials that are widely used in many fields including diagnostics, therapeutics, drug-delivery systems, electronics, cosmetics, sunscreens, coatings, ceramic products, paints, and food additives, due to their magnetic, catalytic, semiconducting, anti-cancer, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, ultraviolet-protective, and binding properties. The present review focused on the recent research works concerning role of ZnO-NP on inflammation. Several studies have reported that ZnO-NP induces inflammatory reaction through the generation of reactive oxygen species by oxidative stress and production of inflammatory cytokines by activation of nuclear factor-${\kappa}B$ ($NF-{\kappa}B$). Meanwhile, other researchers reported that ZnO-NP exhibits an anti-inflammatory effect by inhibiting the up-regulation of inflammatory cytokines and the activation of $NF-{\kappa}B$, caspase-1, $I{\kappa}B$ $kinase{\beta}$, receptor interacting protein2, and extracellular signal-regulated kinase. Previous studies reported that size and shape of nanoparticles, surfactants used for nanoparticles protection, medium, and experimental conditions can also affect cellular signal pathway. This review indicated that the anti-inflammatory effectiveness of ZnO-NP was determined by the nanoparticle size as well as various experimental conditions. Therefore, the author suggests that pharmaceutical therapy with the ZnO-NP is one of the possible strategies to overcome the inflammatory reactions. However, further studies should be performed to maximize the anti-inflammatory effect of ZnO-NP to apply as a potential agent in biomedical applications.

  • In these studies, semibatch emulsion copolymerization of n-butyl acrylate (n-BA) as adhesive component and methyl metacrylate (MMA) as coagulant component was carried out in order to investigate the role of surfactant in aqueous phase for polymer cement. It was found that the particle size and concentration of final polymer are affected by surfactant type used. The effect of nonionic surfactants was shown in the decrease of polymer emulsion concentration and small emulsion particle in order of LE-50, NP-50 > CE-50, Tween 20 > TX-405 > Brij 35. In LE and NP (n=7-50) as nonionic surfactant, it could be obtained the stable polymer emulsion of 40% in aqueous phase with average particle size of 250-320 nm using over n=30. On the other hand, the effect of surfactant type in initial reactor charge was shown that when SDS as ionic surfactant was used, the polymer emulsion concentration was constant irrespective of the amount used, whereas CTAB as cationic surfactant and HN-100 as reactive surfactant were shown a tendency to the decrease of that. The effect surfactant type on final polymer particle size was shown in decrease by the order of SDS > CTAB > HN-100.
