  • The Korean stichaeid fish "Min-be-do-ra-chi", reported previously as Zoarchias glaber, is reviewed taxonomically and described on the basis of a single specimen collected from Jeju Island, Korea. "Min-be-do-ra-chi" was identified as Z. major by the following morphological characteristics: U-shaped markings on the dorsal and anal fins, 31 dorsal fin spines, 78 dorsal fin soft rays, 87 anal fin soft rays, and 109 vertebrae. In contrast, Z. glaber has triangular markings on the dorsal and anal fins, 92-96 anal fin soft rays, and 112-122 vertebrae. Therefore, our results suggest that the scientific name of this species reported previously as Z. glaber should be changed to Z. major.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was designed to identify the effects of heat therapy on dysmenorrhea, heat being provided using a far infrared rays heating element. Methods: The research design for the study was a non-equivalent control group quasi- experimental design. Participants were 22 students for the experimental group, and 26 students for the control group. Data were analyzed using SAS WIN 9.1 program. Results: The experimental group had significantly lower mean scores for menstrual pain, dysmenorrhea, and blood pressure than those in the control group. However, no significant differences were found between two groups for pulse, respiration, and temperature. Conclusion: These findings show that thermotherapy was effective for reduction of menstrual pain, dysmenorrhea, and B/P. Therefore, this therapy could be used as a nursing intervention for students with dysmenorrhea.

  • This experiment was performed to determine the safety of the Korean red ginseng irradiated with gamma rays with respect to genotoxicity. Ethanol extracts of the 5 and 10 kGy gamma-irradiated red ginseng were examined in two short-term in vitro tests : (1) Salmonella typhimurium reversion assay(Ames test) in strain TA 98, TA 100 and TA 102 (2) Micronucleus test in cultured Chinese hamster ovary(CHO) cells. No mutagenicity was detected in the two assays with or without metabolic activation. It was suggested that the Korean red ginseng irradiated with gamma rays did not cause genotoxicity in vitro. Further tests of genotoxicity in vivo, chronic and reproductive toxicity should be carried out to determine whether it is safe to irradiate Korean red ginseng with practical doses of gamma rays.

  • This paper studied a C-arm's exposure condition and measured scatter rays by thickness and distance. This study reached the following conclusion. 1. Approrimately exposure dose for a patient using fluoroscopy is as follows : 2. Mostly, an operating room was not shielding by lead and operator put on only apron without thyroid and facial part protection. 3. 0.5 mmPb equivalent's apron shielded about 99% of scattered rays at 60 cm from x-ray tube. 4. Scattered rays are depended on distance and thickness so operators are should be careful when using fluoroscopy by C-arm and if possible use high frequency equipment that has a large output.

  • In the present study, the protective effect of Scutellaria baicalensis against DNA damage in HL-60 cells exposed to $^{60}$ Co ${\gamma}$-rays was evaluated using micronuclei formation and alkaline single cell gel electrophoresis (SCGE, comet assay). The frequency of micronuclei was decreased in groups treated with water extract (P<0.01), polysaccaride fraction (P<0.01) and methanol fraction (P<0.01) before/after exposure to 200 cGy of ${\gamma}$-rays.(omitted)

  • The amount of incident solar rays on inclined surfaces with various directions has been widely utilized as important data in installing solar collector, hot water system, and designing solar buildings and house. This is because the performance of the solar energy applied systems is much affected by angle and direction of incident rays. Recognizing those factors mentioned above are of importance, actual experiment has been performed in this research to obtain the angle of inclination with which the maximum incident rays can be absorbed. The results obtained in this research could be used in designing optimal solar thermal systems.

  • Setarches longimanus (Alcock 1894), in the family Scorpaenidae, was collected from Busan and the coastal waters of Jeju Island, Korea, in January and November 2014, respectively. Two specimens are characterized by XI, 10 dorsalfin rays; 19-21 pectoralfin rays; III, 5 anal fin rays; a second preopercular spine much shorter than the first and third; and an interorbital width 11.3 %-11.6 % of the standard length. We also analyzed 587 base pairs of the mitochondrial DNA cytochrome c oxidase subunit I sequences in order to confirm the taxonomic status of the specimen. As a result, the sequences of our specimen almost corresponded to those of Chinese S. longimanus (genetic distance, d = 0.005), but considerably differed from those of S. guentheri (d = 0.120-0.124). We propose the new Korean names "Ma-su-gam-peng-sok" for the genus Setarches, and "Bul-geun-ma-su-gam-peng" for the species S. longimanus.

  • In order to explore the time dependence of the closure parameters of the two-fluid calculations for supernova remnants and the terminal shocks of stellar winds, we have considered a simple model in which the time evolution of the cosmic-ray distribution function was followed in the test-particle limit using the Bohm diffusion model. The particles are mostly accelerated to relativistic energy either in the free expansion phase of the SNRs or in the early phase of the stellar winds, so the evolution of the closure parameters during these early stages is substantial and should be followed correctly. We have also calculated the maximum momentum which is limited by either the age or the curvature of these spherical shocks. We found that SNRs expanding into the medium where the gas density decreases with the distance from the explosion center might be necessary to explain the observed power-law distribution of the galactic cosmic rays. The energy loss due to the escaping energetic particles has been estimated for the terminal shocks of the stellar winds.

  • Experimental study for radiation stress properties of EPDM cable for nuclear power plant was investigated. Samples of EPDM are fabricated as hot press, then radiation rays irradiated 0~100Mrad and measured radiation properties in the voltage range of 0~10KV. Voltage-current and capacitance characteristics of linear and log curves and the relationship of current due to irradiation of radiaition rays are discussed.

  • The amount of incident rays over inclination according to direction has been widely utilized as important data m installing solar thermal systems. To optimize the incident solar radiation, the slope, that is the angle between the plane surface in question and the horizontal, and the solar azimuth angles are needed for these solar thermal systems. This is because the performance of the solar thermal systems in much affected by angle and direction of incident rays. Recognizing that factors mentioned above are of importance, actual experiment on the moving route of the sun have been performed in this research to obtain the angle of inclination with which the maximum incident rays can be absorbed. After all, the standard for designing highly optimized solar thermal systems will be provided for designers and employees working in the solar collector related industries.
