A finite element method was used to simulate the wave propagation of laser-generated ultrasound and its interaction with surface breaking cracks in an elastic material. Thermoelastic laser line source on the material surface was approximated as a shear dipole and loaded as nodal forces in the plane-strain finite element (FE) model. The shear dipole- FE model was tested for the generation of ultrasound on the surface with no defect. The model was found to generate the Rayleigh surface wave. The model was then extended to examine the interaction of laser generated ultrasound with surface-breaking cracks of various depths. The crack-scattered waves were monitored to size the crack depth. The proposed model clearly reproduced the experimentally observed features that can be used to characterize the presence of surface-breaking cracks.
Characteristics of a piezoelectric material are evaluated to pick up the optimal crystal cut and propagation direction for a SAW device. For the piezoelectric single crystal $LiTaO_4$, such items are investigated as the Rayleigh wave velocity, the electromechanical coupling factor, the surface permittivity, the frequency-temperature coefficient, the air loading attenuation, the pure mode propagation, the beam steering and the misalignment sensitivity. Theoretical calculations reveal that Y-cut and Z-propagation is the optimal SAW propagation path. The results are confirmed through experiments. The method empolyed in this paper is applicable to other crystals, too, either single or poly crystals.
The contact acoustic emission (AE) monitoring system is time-consuming and costly for monitoring concrete structures in large scope, in addition, the great difference in acoustic impedance between air and concrete makes the detection process inconvenient. In this work, we broaden the conventional AE source localization method for concrete to the non-contact (air-coupled) micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) microphones array, which collects the energy-rich leaky Rayleigh waves, instead of the relatively weak P-wave. Finite element method was used for the numerical simulations, it is shown that the propagation velocity of leaky Rayleigh waves traveling along the air-concrete interface agrees with the corresponding theoretical properties of Lamb wave modes in an infinite concrete slab. This structures the basis for implementing a non-contact AE source location approach. Based on the experience gained from numerical studies, experimental studies on the proposed air-coupled AE source location in concrete slabs are carried out. Finally, it is shown that the locating map of AE source can be determined using the proposed system, and the accuracy is sufficient for most field monitoring applications on large plate-like concrete structures, such as tunnel lining and bridge deck.

This study deals with the prediction of defect location which can be occurred in structure. The existing methods was very difficult to be applied to predict it, because of complex numerical formula. The triangulation method proposed in this study can predict the source location easily with small amount of data. The arrival time of wave can be directly converted into the distance between sensors. For this purpose, the propagation velocity was measured by Rayleigh wave, and the propagation behavior was analyzed. The welded workpiece is adapted to investigate for the consideration of jointed part in structure, The propagation velocity of signal was measured in welded workpiece and the revised algorithm of source location was proposed.

The signal propagation velocity was measured in welding part for the purpose of application to the part and the revised algorithm of source location was proposed.
The objective of this paper is to investigate the surface waves in fibre-reinforced anisotropic thermoelastic medium subjected to gravity field. The theory of generalized surface waves has firstly developed and then it has been employed to investigate particular cases of waves, viz., Stoneley waves, Rayleigh waves and Love waves. The analytical expressions for displacement components, force stress and temperature distribution are obtained in the physical domain by using the harmonic vibrations. The wave velocity equations have been obtained in different cases. The numerical results are given and presented graphically in Green-Lindsay and Lord-Shulman theory of thermoelasticity. Comparison was made with the results obtained in the presence and absence of gravity, anisotropy, relaxation times and parameters for fibrereinforced of the material medium. The results indicate that the effect of gravity, anisotropy, relaxation times and parameters for fibre-reinforced of the material medium are very pronounced.
In this article, a novel propagation formulation of Rayleigh waves in a compressible isotropic half-space with impedance boundary condition is proposed by embedding the normal stress. In a two-dimensional case, it is assumed that a design boundary is free of normal traction and a shear traction depends on linearly a normal component of displacements multiplied by frequencies. Therefore, impedance boundary conditions affect the normal stress, where the impedance parameters correspond to dimensions of stresses over velocity. On the other hand, vanished impedance values are traction-free boundary conditions. The main purpose of this article is to present theoretically the existence and uniqueness of a Rayleigh wave formulation relying on secular equation's mathematical analyses. Its velocity varies along with the impedance parameters. Moreover, numerical experiments with different values for the velocity of Rayleigh waves are carried out. The present Rayleigh waves study is a fundamental step in analyzing the cause and effect of physical states such as building or structure damages resulting from natural dynamics. The results of the study generate a basic design formulation theory to test the effects of Rayleigh waves affecting structures when an earthquake occurs. The presence and uniqueness of the proposed formulation is verified by mutual comparisons of several numerical examples.
When sound waves propagate over long distances in shallow water, measured transmission loss is greater than predicted one using underwater acoustic model with the Rayleigh reflection model due to inhomogeneity of the bottom. Accordingly, the US Navy predicts sound wave propagation by applying the empirical formula-based High Frequency Bottom Loss (HFBL) model. In this study, the measurement and analysis of transmission loss was conducted using mid-frequency (2.3 kHz, 3 kHz) in the shallow water of the East Sea in summer. BELLHOP eigenray tracing output shows that only sound waves with lower grazing angle than the critical angle propagate long distances for several kilometers or more, and the difference between the predicted transmission loss based on the Rayleigh reflection model and the measured transmission loss tend to increase along the propagation range. By comparing the Rayleigh reflection model and the HFBL model at the high grazing angle region, the bottom province, the input value of the HFBL model, is estimated and BELLHOP transmission loss with HFBL model is compared to measured transmission loss. As a result, it agrees well with the measurements of transmission loss.

A SAW strain sensor based on Shear Horizontal wave with an 92 MHz central frequency was developed. It consists of SAW sensor, PCB substrate and bonding material (Loctite 401). External force applied to PCB substrate bonded to a piezoelectric substrate induces strain at the substrate surface, which causes changes in the elastic constant and density of the substrate and hence the propagation velocity of the SAW. The change in the velocity of the SAW result in a frequency shift of the sensor and by measuring a frequency shift, we can extract the strain induced by the external force. The $41^{\circ}$ YX $LiNbO_3$ was used because it has a Leaky shear horizontal(SH) wave propagation mode and a high electromechanical coupling coefficient ($K^2$=17.2%). And to compare with Rayleigh wave mode, $128^{\circ}$ YX $LiNbO_3$ was used. And to make a stable and low insert loss, Split IDT structure was used. The obtained sensitivity and linearity of the SAW strain sensor in the case of Split IDT were measured to be 17.2 kHz / % and 0.99, respectively.

Calculations of the temperature coefficients of the elastic surface wave velocity and delay time were performed for the propagation along the X axis of rotated Y cut plane of the LiNbO3 and LiTaO3. Measurements of the temperature dependence of delay time of the elastic surface wave were also performed for the propagation along the X axis of a 130" rotated Y cut plane of the LiNb03 at the temperature range from liquid He to room temperature. Experimental value 70$\times$10-6/$^{\circ}C$ of the temperature coefficient of the delay time of the elastic surface wave agrees well with the calculated value 72.7$\times$10-a/$^{\circ}C$. The temperature coefficient of delay time of elastic surface wave propagating along the X axis of a 130$^{\circ}$ rotated Y cut plane o( the LiNbO3 is approximately 16$\times$10-6/$^{\circ}C$ at the near temperature of liquid He.d He.
