In this paper, two types of techniques for the prediction of radiated sound pressure due to vibration of a structure are investigated. The prediction performance using wave-number sensing technique is compared to that of conventional prediction method, such as Rayleigh's integral method, for the prediction of far-field radiated sound pressure. For a coupled plate, wave-number components are predicted by the vibration response of plate and the prediction performance of far-field sound is verified. In addition, the applicability of distributed sensors that are not allowable to Rayleigh's integral method is considered and these can replace point sensors. Experimental implementation verified the prediction accuracy of far-field sound radiation by the wave-number sensing technique. Prediction results from the technique are as good as those of Rayleigh's integral method and with distributed sensors, more reduced computation time is expected. To predict the radiated sound by the efficient configuration of structural sensors, composed(synthesized) mode considering sound power contribution is determined and from this size and location of sensors are chosen. Four types of sensor configuration are suggested, simulated and compared.
This paper presents new frequency results for elliptical and semi-elliptical Mindlin plates of various aspect ratios, thicknesses and boundary conditions. The results were obtained using the recently developed computerized Rayleigh-Ritz method for thick plate analysis. For simply supported elliptical plates, it is proposed that the penalty function method be used to enforce the condition of zero rotation of the midplane normal in the tangent plane to the plate boundary.
Using a method suggested by Yanovskaya, we obtained Rayleigh wave group velocities with a resolution of $1.0^{\circ}{\times}1.0^{\circ}$ in a period range between 10 and 80 s in and around the Korean peninsula. Both regional and distant earthquake data sets were used together in analysis of group velocities. The resolution of the group velocity maps has been remarkably enhanced by the method, especially in the sparse/non-station region in the northern Korean peninsula. Some qualitative geophysical information was inferred from the group velocity maps. In the East Sea, the slow group velocities at periods longer than 40 s suggest the existence of an oceanic lithosphere at depths of 50-70 km, assuming 4 km/s of S wave velocity at a period of 40 s. On the other hand, a thick lithosphere can be inferred in the continental area from the fast group velocities at periods longer than 50 s. For most periods, the group velocities change rapidly over a short distance of about 200 km across the eastern coast of Korean peninsula, which may suggest a rapid change in the thickness of lithosphere in this area.
The supercritical carbon dioxide (S-CO2) Brayton cycle is an important energy conversion technology for the fourth generation of nuclear energy. Since the printed circuit heat exchanger (PCHE) used in the S-CO2 Brayton cycle has narrow channels, Rayleigh-Bénard (RB) convection is likely to exist in the tiny channels. However, there are very few studies on RB convection in supercritical fluids. Current research on RB convection mainly focuses on conventional fluids such as water and air that meet the Boussinesq assumption. It is necessary to study non-Boussinesq fluids. PRB convection refers to RB convection that is affected by horizontal incoming flow. In this paper, the computational fluid dynamics simulation method is used to study the PRB convection phenomenon of non-Boussinesq fluid-supercritical carbon dioxide. The result shows that the inlet Reynolds number (Re) of the horizontal incoming flow significantly affects the PRB convection. When the inlet Re remains unchanged, with the increase of Rayleigh number (Ra), the steady-state convective pattern of the fluid layer is shown in order: horizontal flow, local traveling wave, traveling wave convection. If Ra remains unchanged, as the inlet Re increases, three convection patterns of traveling wave convection, local traveling wave, and horizontal flow will appear in sequence. To characterize the relationship between traveling wave convection and horizontal incoming flow, this paper proposes the relationship between critical Reynolds number and relative Rayleigh number (r).
This work gives an application of stochastic techniques for the optimization of stiffened plates in vibration. The search strategy consists of substituting, for finite element calculations in the optimization process, an approximate response from a Rayleigh-Ritz method. More precisely, the paper describes the use of a Rayleigh-Ritz method in creating function approximations for use in computationally intensive design optimization based on genetic algorithms. Two applications are presented; their deal with the optimization of stiffeners on plates by varying their positions, in order to maximize some natural frequencies, while having well defined dimensions. In other words, this work gives the fundamental idea of using a Ritz approximation to the response of a plate in vibration instead of finite element analysis.
A modified one-sided measurement technique is proposed for Rayleigh wave (R-wave) velocity measurement in concrete. The scattering from heterogeneity may affect the waveforms of R-waves in concrete, which may make the R-waves dispersive. Conventional one-sided techniques do not consider the scattering dispersion of R-waves in concrete. In this study, the maximum energy arrival concept is adopted to determine the wave velocity by employing its continuous wavelet transform. Experimental study was performed to show the effectiveness of the proposed method. The present method is applied to monitor the strength development of early-age concrete. A series of experiments were performed on early-age concrete specimens with various curing conditions. Results reveal that the proposed method can be effectively used to measure the R-wave velocity in concrete structures and to monitor the strength development of early-age concrete.
In this article, the vibration behavior of embedded Functionally Graded Nanoplate (FGNP) employing nonlocal Kirchhoff's plate theory has been investigated under hygrothermal environment. The FGNP is considered to be supported by Winkler-Pasternak foundation. The Eringen's differential theory is used for size effect on the vibration of the FGNP. Rayleigh-Ritz method with orthogonal polynomials are employed for the governing equations and edge constraints. The advantage of this method is that it overcomes all the drawbacks of edge constraints and can easily handle any combinations of mixed edge constraints. The coefficients viz. moisture expansion, thermal expansion and elastic coefficients are considered to be transversely graded across the FGNP. The similarity of the calculated natural frequencies is examined with the previous research, and a good concurrency is seen. The objective of this article is to analyze the parameters' effect on the nondimensionalized frequency of embedded FGNP under hygrothermal environment subjected to all possible edge constraints. For this, uniform and linear rise of temperature and moisture concentration are considered. The study highlights that the nonlocal effect is pronounced for higher modes. Moreover, the effect of the Pasternak modulus is seen to be prominent compared to the Winkler modulus on non dimensionalized frequencies of FGNP.
Analytical (Rayleigh-Ritz method) and numerical studies are carried out and buckling interaction curves are developed for simply supported plates of varying aspect ratios ranging from 1 to 5, under the combined action of in-plane shear and tension. A multi-step buckling procedure is employed in the Finite Element (FE) model instead of a regular single step analysis in view of obtaining the buckling load under the combined forces. Both the analytical (classical) and FE studies confirm the delayed shear buckling characteristics of thin plate under the combined action of shear and tension. The interaction curves are found to be linear and are found to vary with plate aspect ratio. The interaction curve developed using Rayleigh-Ritz method is found to deviate in an increasing trend from that of validated FE model as plate aspect ratio is increased beyond value of 1. It is found that the observed deviation is due to the insufficient number of terms that is been considered in the assumed deflection function of Rayleigh-Ritz method and a convergence study is suggested as a solution.
Dynamic characteristics of thermally-forced stratification process in a square enclosure with a linear temperature profile at the side walls have been investigated through flow visualization experiment and numerical analysis. The experiment was performed on air with the Rayleigh numbers of order $10^5$. A particle tracer method is used for the flow visualization and to obtain a sudden linear temperature profile at the side walls copper blocks which already have a linear temperature profile are come into contact with the thin copper plates of the test section. Immediately a meridional circulation is developed and heat transfer takes place from the wall to the interior region by circulation of fluid and finally a thermal stratification is achieved. In the numerical study, QUICK scheme for convective terms, SIMPLE algorithm for pressure correction, and the implicit method for the time marching are adopted for the integration of conservation equations. Comparison of flow visualization and numerical results shows that the developing flow patterns are very similar in dynamic nature even though there is a time lag due to the inevitable time delay in setting up a linear temperature profile. For high Rayleigh numbers, the oscillatory motion is likely to take place and stratified region is extended. However, initial temperature adjustment process is much slower than that for low Rayleigh numbers.

This paper evaluates the performance of two methods of spectrum sensing: the linear combining method and the selection combining method which is based on maximum SNR of sensing channel. We proposed a rule for global detection for the purpose of combating hidden terminal problems in spectrum sensing. Our analysis considers a situation when sensing channels experience the non-identically, independently distributed(n.i.d) Rayleigh fading. The average probabilities of global detection in these methods are derived and compared. In the scope of this paper, the reporting channels are assumed to be the AWGN channel with invariant and identical gain during the system's operation.
