3D rendering is a critical process for a movie production, advertisement, interior simulation, medical and many other fields. Recently, several effective rendering methods have been developed for the photo-realistic image generation. With a rapid performance enhancement of graphics hardware, physically based 3D rendering algorithm can now often be approximated in real-time games. However, the high quality of global illumination, required for the image generation in the 3D animation production community is a still very expensive process. In this paper, we propose a new rendering method to create photo-realistic global illumination effect efficiently by harnessing the high power of the recent GPUs. Final gathering routines in our global illumination module are accelerated by programmable graphics hardware. We also simulate physically based light transport on a ray tracing based rendering algorithm with photon mapping effectively.
Till now there are several rendering models for water and simulating other fluids and their dynamics. Especially in order to generate a curved surface of flexible objects such as liquid and snow, the implicit metaball formulation is widely used in favor of its simplicity and flexibility. This paper proposes one excellent method for generating water droplets, which would be deformed in gravitation field. In previous works, a water droplet was simply represented by approximated curved surfaces of a symmetric metaball. Thus the final result of the rendered water droplet was far from a realistic droplet, because they do not consider the gravitational effect in droplets. We propose a new metaball model for rendering water droplets placed on an arbitrary surface considering the gravitation and friction between droplet and plate. Our new metaball model uses a new vector field isosurface function to control the basic scalar metaball with respect to the norm of gravitational force. In several experiments, we could render a photo-realistic water droplets with natural-looking shadows by applying ray-tracing.
In order to analyze the influence of the noise on a cross-well traveltime tomography to detect a small scale low velocity body in a homogeneous medium, the first arrival travel times were computed one a tunnel model by a finite-difference ray tracing scheme. Three different types and four different intensity levels of white noises were added to the computed first arrival travel times, and velocity tomograms were constructed using an iterative inversion method (SIRT). Tomograms with the noise intensity up to 10% of the maximum traveltime delay in the tunnel model, showed the exact location of the tunnel. However, the velocity shown at the tunnel location was not close to air velocity but only slightly less than the velocity of the background medium. The additive random noise showed significantly less degree of influence on the resulting tomogram than the source- and receiver consistent noise.

In this paper, the propagating-wave attenuation characteristics at 1, 3, and 6 GHz in the open environment roadway where the ground-reflected wave dominates are analyzed through a propagation model simulation using a ray-tracing method and propagation measurements. Simulations has been performed by varying the ground material, the transmitting antenna height, and the receiving antenna height. The measurements were conducted using a directional transmission antenna installed at 10 m mast and a omnidirectional receiving antenna installed at 1.5 m mast in an open environment. Comparison of simulation and measurement results confirms that the null points having the weak signal strength depend on those parameters. Although this research has been investigated for the wide road, the derived result could be useful for installing the transmitter and receiver in the roadway open environment.

Star formation in galaxies predominantly takes place in giant molecular clouds (GMCs). While it is widely believed that UV radiation feedback from young massive stars can destroy natal GMCs by exciting HII regions and driving their expansion, our understanding on how this actually occurs remains incomplete. To quantitatively assess the effect of UV radiation feedback on cloud disruption, we conduct a series of theoretical studies on the dynamics of HII regions and its role in controlling the star formation efficiency (SFE) and lifetime of GMCs in a wide range of star-forming environments. We first develop a semi-analytic model for the expansion of spherical dusty HII regions driven by the combination of gas and radiation pressures, finding that GMCs in normal disk galaxies are destroyed by gas-pressure driven expansion with SFE < 10%, while more dense and massive clouds with higher SFE are disrupted primarily by radiation pressure. Next, we turn to radiation hydrodynamic simulations of GMC dispersal to allow for self-consistent star formation as well as inhomogeneous density and velocity structures arising from supersonic turbulence. For this, we develop an efficient parallel algorithm for ray tracing method, which enables us to probe a range of cloud masses and sizes. Our parameter study shows that the net SFE, lifetime (measured in units of free-fall time), and the importance of radiation pressure (relative to photoionization) increase primarily with the initial surface density of the cloud. Unlike in the idealized spherical model, we find that the dominant mass loss mechanism is photoevaporation rather than dynamical ejection and that a significant fraction of radiation escapes through low optical-depth channels. We will discuss the astronomical.
We derived analytically the generalized curvature linear equation useful in the initial optical design of a two-mirror system with finite object distance, including an infinite object distance from paraxial ray tracing and Seidel third order aberration theory for coma coefficient. These aberration coefficients for finite object distance were described by the curvature, the inter-mirror distance, and the effective focal length. The analytical equations were solved by using a computer with a numerical analysis method. Two useful linear relationships, determined by the generalized curvature linear equations relating the curvatures of the two mirrors, for the cancellation of each aberration were shown in the numerical solutions satisfying the nearly zero condition ($<10^{-10}$) for each aberration coefficient. These equations can be utilized easily and efficiently at the step of initial optical design of a two-mirror system with finite object distance.

The net effect of the emitter orientation, Mie scatters, and pillow lenses on the outcoupling efficiency (OCE) of a bottom-emitting OLED having an internal photonic crystal layer was investigated by a combined optical simulation based on the finite-difference time-domain method (FDTD) and the ray-tracing technique. The simulation showed that when the emitter orientation was horizontal with respect to the OLED surface, the OCE could be increased by 54% when a photonic crystal layer was employed, while it could be improved by 86% under optimized conditions of Mie scatters and pillow lenses applied to the glass substrate. The peculiar intensity distribution of the OLED, caused by the periodic lattice structure of the photonic crystal layer, could be ameliorated by inserting Mie scatters into the glass substrate. This study suggests that conventional outcoupling structures combined with control of the emitter orientation could improve the OCE substantially.
In the remote sensing researches, the reflected bright source such as snow, cloud have effects on the image quality of wanted signal. Even though those signal from bright source are adjusted in corresponding pixel level with atmospheric correction algorithm or radiometric correction, those can be problem to the nearby signal as one of the stray light source. Especially, in the step and stare observational method which makes one mosaic image with several snap shots, one of target area can affect next to the other snap shot each other. Presented in this paper focused on the stray light analysis from unwanted reflected bright source for geostationary ocean color sensor. The stray light effect for total 16 slot images each other were performed according to 8 band filters. For the realistic simulation, we constructed system modeling with integrated ray tracing technique which realizes the same space time in the remote sensing observation among the Sun, the Earth, and the satellite. Computed stray light effect in the results of paper demonstrates the distinguishable radiance value at the specific time and space.

There has been a growing interest in thick composite materials especially for primary structures. Fiber waviness is one of the manufacturing defects frequently encountered in thick composite structures and affects the mechanical properties such as stiffness and strength significantly. Therefore, nondestructive evaluation technique that can detect fiber waviness of thick composite is very important for the integrity of structures. In this study, efforts were made to understand ultrasonic wave propagation in thick composites with uniform fiber waviness by adopting the ray and plane wave theories. Both theoretical and experimental investigations were conducted to understand the wave propagation in thick composites with uniform fiber waviness. The experiments were conducted on specially fabricated thick composite specimens with various degrees of uniform fiber waviness using the conventional through-transmission method to verify the predicted results. The experimental results showed good agreement with the theoretical predictions.
We have performed modeling and simulations of optical characteristics for a cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) color filter. Berreman's $4{\times}4$ matrix method was used for the calculation of reflectance spectra of the CLC color filter with respect to the incident angle. The results were employed as input parameters for a user-defined coating property of an illumination design software based on the ray-tracing method, LightTools. Color shift characteristics of a planar transmission-type CLC color filter were simulated using LightTools. The results were compared with the results obtained with Berreman's $4{\times}4$ matrix method. It was found that color shift characteristics of the CLC color filter could be simulated to a reasonable accuracy when the reflectance spectra with less than 5 degrees of incremental incidence-angle were used as the input data for the user-defined coating property of LightTools. We have simulated color shift characteristics of a reflection-type CLC color filter having hemi-spherical patterns. The simulation method reported in this paper has been found to be also used for a non-planar CLC color filter structure.
