  • The use household water purifier is continuously increasing due to the distrust of the piped, rap water, which may be caused by the deterioration of water quality and water supply facilities in Korea. The water purifier distributing in the domestic market is the membrane type that composes of membrane as a basic filter, sediment filter as a prefilter and activated carbon filter instead of one purifying water system. The membrane type using as a water cleaning system is mainly the method of micro filtration(NIF) as well as ultra filtration(UF) and reverse osmosis(RO). The types of MF and UF are using to remove suspended solids and virus, and RO is using to remove ionic compound in chemical organic compounds. At the beginning the household water purifier was imported as end-product or assembled by only importing module from small businesses in Korea. Therefore, people was hard to confide in the product quality because the sales policy and management of water purifier by small business were not effectively organized. However, the defects of water purifier having up to now ate improving by the efforts of special branches of water purifier and large enterprises, and new great products are developing and producing. To develop the best quality product of water purifier in Korea, it should be considered seasonal water characteristrics rather than any other condition. For example, the water purifier can be affected by the water temperature change, increase of suspended solids in the rainy season and inflow of raw water having concentration in a dry season. The subject we have to investigate in the future is to develop the water purifying system adaptable in Korea which can treat the water quality using close analyses of local and seasonal water characteristics.

Raw264.7 cells에서 바이칼린 함유 황금열수 추출물의 면역계 조절을 통한 항염증 효과 (Anti-inflammatory Effect of Scutellaria baicalensis Hot Water Extracts Containing Baicalin on Modulation of the Immune System in Raw264.7 Cells)

  • 체내 면역시스템은 내부의 돌연변이 세포에 의하여 발생된 암 뿐만 아니라 세균감염에 의하여 기인된 여러질환으로 부터 우리의 몸을 보호한다. 하지만 노화됨에 따라 비정상적인 면역시스템은 류머티스 관절염과 같은 만성염증을 유발시킨다. 그러므로, 본 연구의 목적은 효능성분으로 바이칼린을 함유한 황금의 항염증 효과를 조사한 것이다. 먼저 HPLC 분석에서 SBWE는 42.2 mg/g의 바이칼린을 함유하고 있는 것으로 관찰되었다. Raw264.7 세포에서 황금열수추출물(SBWE)의 세포독성을 평가하기 위하여 MTT assay를 수행하였다. SBWE는 160 ${\mu}g/ml$ 이하의 농도에서 세포에 대한 독성이 없는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 lipopolysaccharide로 자극된 대식세포에서 발생하는 nitric oxide 소거능 효과를 조사해 본 결과 40 ${\mu}g/ml$의 농도에서 SBWE는 40%의 억제효과를 나타내었다. 뿐만 아니라 SBWE는 zymosan으로 자극된 대식세포의 식세포작용도 억제 하였다. 더욱이 SBWE는 농도에 비례하여 대식세포에서 생성되는 $TNF{\alpha}$함량을 감소시켰다. SBWE는 또한 시간경과 실험에서 인터류킨 베타($IL-1{\beta}$)의 생성을 억제하였다. 더욱이 cyclooxynase-2의 발현수준은 20 ${\mu}g/ml$의 SBWE 처리에 의하여 현저하게 감소되었다. 그러므로 이상의 연구결과는 황금 열수 추출물이 면역조절을 통해 항염증을 효능을 발휘할 수 있다는 하나의 증거를 제공한다.

접촉여과방식 거친여과지에서 혼화조건과 여과속도가 고탁도 제거에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Mixing Condition and Filtration Velocity on Turbidity Removal in a Contact Roughing Filter)

  • Slow sand filtrations have been widely used for water treatment in small communities, however their capacity is often limited by high turbidity in the raw water. For this reason, several pre-treatment facilities were required for a slow sand filter. Turbidity removal from the highly turbid raw water was investigated in roughing filters as a pre-treatment process. The roughing filters followed by rapid mixing tank were operated in the form of a contact filtration. In several jar tests, the predetermined optimum aluminium sulfate (alum) doses for turbid water of 30 and 120NTU were 30 and 50mg/L, respectively. At the optimum alum dose, physically optimum parameters including G value of $220sec^{-1}$ and rapid mixing time of 3 minutes were applied to the contact filtration system. Without addition of alum, the filtrate turbidity from the roughing filters, packed respectively with different media such as sand, porous diatomite ball and gravel, was in the range of 5~30NTU at filtration velocities of 30 and 50m/day. However, the application of a contact filtration to roughing filters showed stably lower filtrate turbidity below 1.0NTU at filtration velocity of 30 m/day. Although the filtration velocity increased to 50m/day, filtrate turbidity was still below 1.0NTU in both single and double layer roughing filters. At influent turbidity of 120NTU, the filtrate turbidity was over 5 NTU in the triple layer roughing filter, which shortened the filter run time. The flocs larger than $10{\mu}m$, formed in the rapid mixing tank, were almost captured through the roughing filter bed, while the almost flocs smaller than $10{\mu}m$ remained in filtrate.

수질제어를 통한 관 내부 부식방지 기술의 정수처리공정 적용방안 (Approaches to Internal Corrosion Control Technologies by Controlling Water Quality in Water Treatment Systems)

  • Although final water of domestic water treatment plants almost contains highly corrosive characteristics, the countermeasures for eliminating internal corrosion of pipeline system have not been conducted yet by controlling water quality in plants. The technologies of internal corrosion control are to control water quality parameters(pH, Alkalinity, and Calcium Hardness etc.) and to use corrosion inhibitor. Under the conditions of domestic water treatment, first of all, the technologies of adjusting water quality parameters has to be considered. Otherwise, The technology of using corrosion inhibitor is favorably thought to be applied with the technology of adjusting water quality parameters in accordance with the result of availability for water treatment process. Since the technology of adjusting water quality parameter influences on other water treatment processes, the guideline of water quality management to be apt for water quality characteristic is required to be estabilished. While the selection of proper chemicals and technologies is dependent upon the raw water characteristics and water treatment process, typically, the technology of $Ca(OH)_2$ & $CO_2$ additions is considered more effective than other technologies in order to adjust pH and Alkalinity, increase $Ca^{2+}$ and form $CaCO_3$ film

옹기 필터를 이용한 무 전원 정수 장치에 관한 연구 (Characteristics of the Non-electric Water Purification System Using Onggi Filter)

  • A non-electric water purification system using the Korean traditional ceramic ware Onggi, was demonstrated as an appropriate technology to solve water shortages in under developed regions. Generally, Onggi is produced using large size raw materials that are sintered at low temperature, resulting in a porous body that shows air and water permeability. An Onggi filter was prepared using a spinning wheel with the addition of rice bran to the body to increase porosity. The porosity of the obtained Onggi filter was 25.1%; the water permeability was 85.1 $L/m^2h$. Turbidity and TDS of the purified water using Onggi filter were decreased by 97.7% and 29.1%, respectively.

  • Waterborne infectious disease is induced by several pathogenic microbes such as bacteria, viruses and protozoans, and the cases caused by viral infection is currently increasing. Water treatment process could reduce the number of virus in the water, but there were many difficulties to completely remove the virus particles from water. Therefore, the membrane separation technology which was reported to effectively remove pollutants from raw water has attracted increasing attention and demand. Since its efficiency has been introduced, demands for evaluation method toward the membrane filtration process are increasing. However, progression of the method development is slow due to the difficulties in cultivation of several waterborne viruses from animal models or cell culture system. To overcome the difficulties, we used adenovirus, one of the commonly isolated pathogenic waterborne viruses which can grow in cell culture system in vitro. The adenovirus used in this study was identified as human adenovirus C strain. The adenovirus was spiked in the raw water and passed through the microfiltration membrane produced by Econity, a Korean membrane company, and then the viral removal rate was evaluated by real-time PCR. In the results, the amount of virus in the filtered water was decreased approximately by 5 log scale. Because coagulant treatment has been known to reduce filtering function of the membrane by inducing fouling, we also investigated whether there was any interference of coagulant. In the results, we confirmed that coagulant treatment did not show significant interference on microfiltration membrane. In this study, we found that waterborne virus can be effectively removed by membrane filtration system. In particular, here we also suggest that real-time PCR method can rapidly, sensitively and quantitatively evaluate the removal rate of virus. These results may provide a standard method to qualifying membrane filtration processes.

추출용액에 따른 유산균 발효 땅두릅의 항염증 효과 (Enhancement of the Anti-inflammatory Activities of Aralia continentalis Kitagawa Extracts Fermented by Lactobacillus plantarum)

  • 본 연구는 추출 용매별 땅두릅 추출물과 Lactobacillus plantarum으로 발효한 후 용매별로 추출한 땅두릅 발효추출물을 이용하여 항염증 효과를 측정한 연구이다. 땅두릅은 중추신경 계통에 대한 흥분작용이 있고 혈압강하 작용이 알려져 있으며 관절염, 감기, 신경통, 류마티스, 피부가려움증 등에 쓰인다. LPS (lipopolysaccharide)로 염증을 유도한 마우스 유래 macrophage에서의 NO 생성 및 염증관련인자의 발현에 미치는 영향을 검토하여 항염증 소재로서의 이용 가능성을 확인하였다. 건조 땅두릅을 water, ethanol, hexane, ethyl acetate, butanol을 이용하여 추출한 추출물들과 L. plantarum으로 발효한 후 추출한 추출물들에서 RAW264.7 대식세포에 대한 독성 여부를 측정하였고, 세포에 대한 독성이 나타나지 않는 농도에서 추출물의 항염증 활성을 확인하였다. 본 실험에 사용된 추출물은 LPS로 유도된 NO 생성을 유의적으로 억제하였으며, 주요 염증 유발인자인 COX-2와 iNOS의 발현 또한 유의적으로 억제하는 효과를 나타냈다. 염증관련 cytokine인 $IL-1{\beta}$, IL-6 및 $TNF-{\alpha}$의 생성량 또한 유의적으로 감소시켰다. 이상의 결과로부터 땅두릅을 L. plantarum으로 발효한 후 water, ethanol, butanol로 추출하였을 때 염증 억제 효과가 있는 기능성 식품 소재로서의 개발 가능성이 있을 것으로 사료된다.

Smart Water Quality Sensor Platform For Hydroponic Plant Growing Applications

  • This work presents a smart water quality sensor for hydroponic plant growing applications. The proposed sensor can effectively measure pH level and electrical conductivity of the water solution. The micro-controller incorporated in the sensor processes the raw sensor data, and converts it into a readable format. In addition, through the mobile interface realized using a WiFi module, the sensor can send data to the web server database that collects and stores the data. The data stored in the web server can be accessed by a personal computer or smart phone. The prototype sensor has been implemented, and the operations have been verified under an actual hydroponic plant growing application.

도시하수 처리에 의한 미생물 오염의 제거효과에 관한 조사연구(I) -청계천 하수처리장을 중심으로- (An Analysis on Removal Effect of Biological Contaminants in the Process of Municipal Sewage Treatment System - On the Seoul Cheonggye Cheon Sewage Treatment Plant)

  • This investigation was carried out to evaluate the removal effect of biological contaminants for the municipal sewage treatment process at Cheonggye Cheon terminal plant which in the first plant for municipal sewage treatment in Seoul area. It was conducted in raw influent, primary treatment water and secondary treatment water from September, 1986 to July, 1987. The results were as follow; 1, The primary treatment could eliminate microbials for $65.38\%$ of total bacteria, $64.35\%$ of total coliform, $62.16\%$ of fecal coliform $69.48\%$ of pseudomonas and $64.70\%$ of fecal streptococci in averages for a year respectively. 2. The secondary treatment could eliminate microbials for $97.50\%$ of total bacteria, $97.30\%$of total coliform, $95.95\%$ of fecal coliform, $97.00\%$ of pseudomonas and $96.53\%$ of fecal streptococci in average for a year respectively. 3. In the detect rate of pathogenic agent, salmonella spp was decreased $12.5\%$ to $4.2\%$ in primary treatment and it was not detected in secondary treatment, shigella spp was detected $4.2\%$ in influent water but it was not detected in primary and secondary treatment. 4. In the seasonal variation of treatment effect, the removal of summer was the highest, and the removal of all item in winter was lower than the other seasons. 5. There was significant correlation between water temperature and microbal all items (P<0.05) $NH_3-N$ and Microbal items (P< 0.01) at raw water.

응집과 여과를 이용한 조류의 초고속 제어에 관한 연구 (High-rate Removal of Algae by Using of Filtration System with Coagulant Addition)

  • Abundant growth of algae in raw water sources caused by eutrophication brings about significant side effects on water supply, such as taste and order problem, oxygen depletion, toxic material secretion, and filter clogging problem in water treatment process, etc. The purpose of this research is to remove the algae and phosphorus compounds in the Pal-dang reservoir promptly by using the upflow filtration system with coagulant addition. The filter tower consisted of sand media and sieve filter with air back-washing process. By using coagulation and filtration with $132{\mu}m$ pore size filter, about 55% and 70% of algae and phosphorus compounds were removed respectively. The experimental conditions were as follows; head loss of 0.2m, linear velocity of 200m/day, and filtration flux of 1000($L/m^2/day$). In the case of filtration with cartridge type filter of $25{\mu}m$ pore size, the filtration flux was about 7800 LMH, and the removal ratios of COD, SS, T-P, and Chlo-a. were 61%, 99%, 54%, and 98%, respectively. However, high pressure air back-washing process with should be required for the maintenance of such high filtration flux.
