  • The rate of heat release is probably the single most important measure of fire hazard. Several tech-niques were developed for the measurement of rate of heat release, but were not suitable for fire test-ing purpose. Recently the application of oxygen consumption principle made it possible to development of well-characterized heat release rate measurement apparatus, the furniture calorimeter for large-scale fire tests and the cone calorimeter for bench-scale fire tests. The cone calorimeter can be used to determine the ignitability as well as heat release rate and smoke development, mass loss rate, combustion gas production etc. from burning materials. Thus, test method using cone calorimeter, an internationally recognized and accepted for the evalua-tion of fire properties, is a very promising tool for combustion study on various kind of materials and products.

  • This study was to analyze the effect of mixed fuel composition and mass fraction on the characteristics of evaporating diesel spray and combustion under the various ambient conditions. The characteristics of vaporization distribution and combustion were visualized by laser induced fluorescent method and direct photography. The experiments were conducted in the constant volume vessel and rapid compression expansion machine with optical access. Multi-component fuels mixed i-octane, n-dodecane and n-hexadecane were injected the vessel and rapid compression expansion machine with electronically controlled common rail injector. Experimental results show that fuel vapor formed stratified distribution. And vaporization and diffusion are become actively increasing in mass fraction of low boiling point component. Consequently multi-component fuels were expected to control the evaporating behavior according to their suitable mass fraction.

  • Combustion analysis based on cylinder-pressure provides a mechanism through which a combustion researcher can understand the combustion process. The objective of this paper was to identify the most significant sources of cycle-to-cycle combustion variability in a spark ignition engine at idle. To analyse the cyclic variation in a test engine, the burn parameters are determined on a cycle-to-cycle basis through the analysis of the engine pressure data. The burn rate analysis program was used here and the burn parameters were used to determine the variations in the input parameter-i. e., fuel, air, and residual mass. In this study, we investigated the relationship of indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP), coefficient of variation (COV) of IMEP, burn angles, and lowest normalized value (LNV) in a spark ignition engine in a view of cyclic variations.

  • The optimal design and combustion analysis of the gas generator for Liquid Rocket Engine (LRE) were performed. A fuel-rich gas generator in open cycle turbopump system was designed for 10ton$_{f}$ in thrust with RP-1/Lox propellant. The optimal design was done for maximizing specific impulse of main combustion chamber with constraints of combustion temperature and power matching required by turbopump system. Design variables were selected as total mass flow rate to gas generator, O/F ratio in gas generator, turbine injection angle, partial admission ratio, and turbine rotational speed. Results of optimal design show the dimension of length, diameter, and contraction ratio of gas generator. Also, the combustion test was conducted to evaluate the performance of injector and combustion chamber. And the effect of the turbulence ring was investigated on the mixing enhancement in the chamber.r.

  • In this paper, the effect of the ultrasonic energy on the diesel engine's smoke reduction has been investigated for indirect injection diesel engine. The smoke concentration of the ultrasonically reformed diesel fuel was reduced remarkably in comparison with conventional diesel fuel. And in-cylinder pressure, heat release rate and mass fraction burned was improved but combustion duration was decreased. However, The combustion durations and the smoke concentrations of both diesel fuels were proportional to the increases of engine loads. Also, When the combustion duration has been increasing, the smoke emission has been augmenting in the shape of the exponential functions.

  • The aerothermodynamic characteristics of SCRamjet engine for the airbreathing populsion system of the next generation flight vehicle are described. As the flow is passing by, combustion caused the total pressure loss and the Mach number decrease, but nozzle exit velocity is large enough to produce net thrust. To simulate supersonic combustion test, preliminary design of ground-based blowdown type supersonic combustion tunnel is attained. Minimum allowable operating pressure and mass flow rate are calculated for the design Mach number of 2.5 at the test section of a supersonic combustion tunnel.

  • This study examined the combustion and thermal characteristics of imported woods for building materials in Korea. Wooden specimens were confirmed by a cone calorimeter according to the KS F ISO 5660-1 standard. The combustion properties of the wooden specimens were measured in terms of the heat release rate (HRR), total heat released (THR), mass lose rate (MLR), and ignition time (time to ignition; TTI). The optical microscope was used for determine the anatomical characteristics of wood pit and structure. Also, the thermal properties were measured by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) to determine the thermal stability of wooden specimens. The result of this experiment would be useful for fundamentals of guiding the combustion properties and thermal stability using wood application.

  • This paper discusses hydrodynamic characteristics of cold circulating fluidized bed(CFB) in different solid mass inventories. Operating parameters of solid mass inventory, primary air and J-valve fluidizing air were varied to find out the effect on the flow fludization pattern. Experimental measurements were made in a 3m tall CFB that has 0.05m riser diameter and black silica-carbonate of particle sizes from $100{\mu}m$ to $500{\mu}m$ were employed as the bed material. The operating conditions of superficial gas velocity and J-valve fluidizing velocity were in the ranges of 1.39~3.24 m/s and 0.139~0.232 m/s respectively. The axial solid fraction and solid circulation rate of CFB were observed and compared with modelling through IEA-CFBC Model and commercial CFD code.

  • The combustion characteristics of phenol foam were analysed using variable external irradiation level (20, 25, 35, 50, and $70kW/m^2$) and in the mixture gas of oxygen/nitrogen. The oxygen index were carried out from the oxygen index tester (KS M ISO 4589-2) and ignition time, critical heat flux, and mass loss rate were carried out from the mass loss calorimeter (ISO 5660-1). As the results of this study, the critical heat flux and average mass loss rate were $28.99kW/m^2$ and $0.56{\sim}1.77g/m^2s$ respectively at the variable external irradiation level. And the limited oxygen index were 45.1% in mixture gas of oxygen/nitrogen. In conclusion, we knew that phenol foam had the best performance than other foam materials in fire safety from all data of this study.

  • In this study, we presented the results of static firing tests on the PE/LN2O hybrid rocket motor, which has a thrust of 650 kgf level. Through the early tests, we found that the combustion chamber pressure and the thrust were lower than design values because an actual oxidizer flow rate was less than that expected. In order to complement this result, the methods of decrease of nozzle throat and the increase of oxidizer mass flow rate were conducted in the next experiment, and we studied the combustion phenomena with the experimental results. Also we compared and analyzed a difference of combustion characteristics on scale effect. It show that a sub-scale motor regression rate was a little less than that of a lab-scale motor with the same oxidizer mass flux. Results of this study might be used as a basic data for development of hybrid sounding rocket.
