  • When Li2O.2SiO2 glass was crystallized between the temperature of maximum nucleation and the temperature of maximum crystal growth it was found that the control of heating rate had serious effect on the crystallinity and microstructure and the greatly changed physical properties. Density and elastic modulus tends to increase but thermal expansion coefficient decreased with increased crystallinity. When heating rate between the tempe-rature of maximum nucleation and the temperature of maximum crystal growth was 10~5$0^{\circ}C$/hr. crystallinity was increased to result in the increment of strength. When nuclation was done at 44$0^{\circ}C$ for 5 hours and the temperature of crystal growth was held at 575$^{\circ}C$ strength was increased until crystallinity reached 65% and strength was decreased with higher crystallinity. These phenomena could be explained that even for the same crystallinity different heat rates resulted in different number and size of cracks.

  • When CVD-W films deposited on the reactively sputter-deposited TiN(${\circled1}$), the $NH_3$-RTP (rapid themal processed) TiN(${\circled2}$), and the furnace-annealed TiN submitate (${\circled3}$) by $SiH_4$, reduction, deposition rate is in the order of ${\circled1}>{\circled2}>{\circled3}$ and incubation period of W nucleation is in the order of ${\circled1}{\leq}{\circled2}<{\circled3}$. The longest incubation period of nucleation and lowest deposition rate for the CVD-W on the annealed TiN is due to the incorporation of oxygen from the nitrogen ambient containing some oxygen as contaminant into the TiN film. The higher W deposition rate and the lower incubation period of W nucleation on the RTP-TiN substrate in comparison with those on the sputtered TiN substrate seem to be due to a negative effect of the high compressive stress of the RTP-TiN on the nucleation and growth of W. Also the thickness uniformity of the W film deposited on the TiN substrate by $SiH_4$ reduction turns out to be better than that by $H_2$ reduction.

  • The grain size and growth direction of a directionally solidified turbine blade were evaluated by the initial nucleation condition at the start block of directional solidification. The initial nucleation condition was controlled by inserting a Ni foil on the directional solidification plate of the directional solidification furnace. Fine grains with good orientation were obtained in the faster cooling condition at the start block. The nucleus number was compared with the cooling rate of the start block by electron back scattered diffraction (EBSD). DSC (differential scanning calorimeter) analysis was performed to compare the melting point and undercooling for nucleation of the coarse nuclei and fine nuclei of the start block. The faster cooling condition at the start block showed more undercooling for nucleation and smaller size of nuclei which resulted in a fine grain with good orientation in the directional turbine blade.

  • The effect of mold preheating temperature on the microstructure such as grain size, eutectic silicon morphology was investigated for the Al-7wt%Si-0.3wt%Mg alloy. Microstructural variations have been characterized as a function of Sr addition and cooling rate during solidification. Microstructures were correlated with cooling rate, local solidification time and eutectic nucleation temperature, etc. In this study, Sr addition caused increase of local solidification time, undercooling and reduction of eutectic plateau temperature. In logarithmic scale, local solidification time was in inverse proportion to cooling rate. Eutectic nucleation temperature was in inverse proportion to cooling rate of logarithmic scale. Increasing the cooling rate refined dendrite arm spacing and eutectic silicon. Dendrite arm spacing was logarithmically in inverse proportion to cooling rate. Without modifier addition, eutectic silicon was modified at cooling rate of $7^{\circ}C/s$ or higher.

  • The OISF (Oxidation Induced Stacking Fault)is expected to affect the electrical properties in Si single crystals, and the nuclei of OISF are believed to be formed during the crystal growing process. Initial oxygen concentration, dopant type and its density, and cooling rate are regareded as major factors on OISF formation. In this study, the variations of OISF density under various cooling rate were investigated. Si single crystal was heated to $1400^{\circ}C$ in Ar ambient and cooled down to room temperature at different cooling rate, using horizontal tube furnace. After that, they were oxidized at $1150^{\circ}C$, and then, OISF was observed with optical microscope. The relation between oxide procipitates and OISF nucleation was investigated by FTIR analysis. As a result, it was found that there exists the intermediate cooling rate range in which OISF nucleation is highly enhanced. And also, it was found that OISF nucleation is closely related with silicon oxide procipitation in Si single crystals.

  • Molecular weight of polyaniline is controlled in the range of oligomer to low molecular weight by controlling the ratio of aniline dimer (p-aminodiphenylamine) to monomer. Aniline dimers act as nucleation sites in chain growth during the polymerization of aniline. The molecular weights of polyanilines are estimated by GPS and relative viscosity measurement. The physical and chemical properties of polyanilines with various molecular weights are studied by UV-Vis, FT-IR, and electrical conductivity measurements.

  • Magnetic field dependence of magnetization reversal in Co/Pt multilayers has been quantitatively investigated. Serial samples of Co/Pt multilayers have been prepared by dc-magnetron sputtering under various Ar pressure. Magnetization reversal was monitored by magnetization viscosity measurement and direct domain observation using a magneto-optical microscope system, and the wall-motion speed and the nucleation rate R were determined using a domain reversal model based on time-resolved domain reversal patterns. Both and R were found to be exponentially dependent on the reversing applied field. From the exponential dependencies, the activation volumes of the wall motion and nucleation could be determined based on a thermally activated relaxation model, and the wall-motion activation volume was revealed to be slightly larger than the nucleation activation volume.

  • Diamond is well known as the hardest material in nature. It also has other unique bulk physical and mechanical properties, such as very high thermal conductivity and broad optical transparency, which enable a number of new applications now that large areas of diamond can be fabricated by the new diamond plasma chemical vapor deposition (CVD) technologies. A study on the effects of growth kinetics and properties of diamond films obtained by addition of argon (~7 vol. %) into the methane/hydrogen mixture is carried out using HFCVD system. A negative bias was used as a nucleation enhancement method in addition to the argon dilution. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) image of surface morphology shows well faceted crystallites with a predominance of angular shapes corresponding to <100> and <110> crystalline surfaces. The nucleation density and growth rate with argon dilution is two orders of magnitude higher than without argon deposition. The Raman spectra show a good quality film whereas XPS spectra show existence of only diamond phase.

  • Mono-disperse particles generated by a condensation particle generator are widely used to meet the experimental and industrial needs. The characteristics of particles generated by homogeneous nucleation have been studied experimentally using a laminar flow condensation particle generator. Dry nitrogen gas saturated with oleic acid vapor was cooled well below the saturation temperature causing the highly supersaturated vapor to nucleate. The dependence of GSD(Geometric Standard Deviation), GMD(Geometric Mean Diameter), and the mass concentration of particles on the temperature at the evaporator, flow rate and the temperature condition at condenser was studied. The experimental results show that the mass concentration of particles is affected by the radial temperature profile at condenser. Nucleation at the center of the condenser causes the mass concentration of particles to increase. The experimental results also show that the suppression of additional nucleation by a constant temperature condition at the condenser increases the mean diameter of particle.

  • In this paper, the isothermal crystallization kinetics of a functional PP (FPP) with different grafting yields (GY)-methacryloxyethyltrimethyl ammonium chloride (DMC) grafted PP were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The results showed that the crystallization rate of FPP (GY=4.83%) was the highest for all of the studied samples. Furthermore, for the FPP with different GY, the value of $t_{1/2}$ became longer with increasing the grafting yield (GY). The possible explanation was that the quaternary ammonium groups introduced affected the crystallization process of the FPP in two opposite directions, i.e. promoting the nucleation and hindering the transport of the chain molecules towards the growing nuclei. Polarized optical micrographs showed that the DMC chains acted as nucleating agents, which accelerated the nucleation. In addition, the results showed the FPP had lower nucleation free energy than the PP. This study would be useful for designing the processing parameters of the grafted samples.
