  • A real-time frame-layer rate control algorithm with a token bucket traffic shaper is proposed for distortion variation minimization. The proposed rate control method uses a non-iterative optimization method for low computational complexity, and performs bit allocation at the frame level to minimize the average distortion over an entire sequence as well as variations in distortion between frames. The proposed algorithm does not produce time delay from encoding, and is suitable for real-time low-complexity video encoder. Experimental results indicate that the proposed control method provides better visual and PSNR performances than the existing rate control method.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient algerian for wavelet-based sti image coding method that utilizes the rate-distortion (R-D) theory. Since conventional tree-structured image coding schemes do not consider the rate-distortion theory properly, they show reduced coding performance. In this paper, we apply an rate-distortion optimized embedding (RDE) operation into the set partitioning in hierarchical trees (SPIHT) algorithm. In this algorithm, we use the rate-distortion slope as a criterion for the coding order of wavelet coefficients in SPIHT lists. We also describe modified set partitioning and rate-distortion optimized list scan methods. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the SPIHT algorithm and the rate-distortion optimized embedding algerian with respect to the PSNR (peak signal-to-noise ratio) performance.

  • In H.264/AVC, rate distortion optimization algorithm is used to decide the best block mode from various block modes. It improves a bit rate but greatly increases an amount of computation. This paper proposes a fast rate distortion optimization algorithm that omits a rate distortion optimization adaptively by predicting its cost from the cost calculated for motion estimation. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm, on average, keeps nearly the image quality and the bit rate made by the rate distortion optimization while reduces 69.86% and 69.63% of computation added by it in CIF and QCIF respectively.

  • Compressed video sensing (CVS) is one of the 5G application of compressed sensing (CS) to video coding. Block-based residual reconstruction is used in CVS to explore temporal redundancy in videos. However, most current studies on CVS focus on random measurements without quantization, and thus they are not suitable for practical applications. In this study, an efficient ratecontrol scheme combining measurement rate and quantization for residual reconstruction in CVS is proposed. The quantization effects on CS measurements and recovery for video signals are first analyzed. Based on this, a mathematical relationship between quantitative distortion (QD), sampling rate (SR), and the quantization parameter (QP) is derived. Moreover, a novel distortion model that exhibits the relationship between QD, SR, and QP is presented, if statistical independency between the QD and the CS reconstruction distortion is assumed. Then, using this model, a rate-distortion (RD) optimized rate allocation algorithm is proposed, whereby it is possible to derive the values of SR and QP that maximize visual quality according to the available channel bandwidth.

  • A novel fast algorithm is suggested for a coding unit (CU) mode decision using pseudo rate-distortion based on a separated encoding structure in High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC). A conventional HEVC encoder requires a large computational time for a CU mode prediction because prediction and transformation procedures are applied to obtain a rate-distortion cost. Hence, for the practical application of HEVC encoding, it is necessary to significantly reduce the computational time of CU mode prediction. As described in this paper, under the proposed separated encoder structure, it is possible to decide the CU prediction mode without a full processing of the prediction and transformation to obtain a rate-distortion cost based on a suitable condition. Furthermore, to construct a suitable condition to improve the encoding speed, we employ a pseudo rate-distortion estimation based on a Hadamard transformation and a simple quantization. The experimental results show that the proposed method achieves a 38.68% reduction in the total encoding time with a similar coding performance to that of the HEVC reference model.

  • In this paper, a new rate-distortion estimation method is proposed for fast rate-distortion optimized(RDO) mode decision in H.264 encoder. A bit-rate and distortion should be calculated by encoding and reconstruction of each macroblock mode in order to select the optimal RDO mode. To reduce the computations for getting them, a bit-rate and distortion is efficiently estimated in DCT domain. Simulation results show that the proposed method achieves computational saving about 81% of RDO mode decision and saves about 26% of total encoding time without noticeable degradation in coding performance.

  • We propose an algorithm for the robust transmission of video in error prone environment based on multiple description (MD) scheme and simple rate-distortion operators. The redundancy rate-distortion (RRD) criteria is used to split a one-layer compressed video stream into two correlated descriptions. The proposed algorithm can find more candidate points on the RRD curve than the conventional RRD based methods. A new distortion measure is also defined in this paper, which considers more realistic error environments. Since the proposed MD video coder is based on the standard H.263 coder, each description can be decoded independently by the standard H.263 decoder. Also, several descriptions can be decoded into a single stream by additional merge stage and the H.263 decoder. Simulation results show that the proposed MD video coder yields better performance than the conventional MD splitting algorithm at all bitrates both in single and two description cases.

  • Bit allocation is a critical problem in video encoding such as MPEG. To improve the quality of the reconstructed sequence for a given bit rate, the assigned target bits for a group of pictures (GOP) must be allocated to each picture efficiently. In this paper, we derive a target bit allocation algorithm for more efficient rate control, by assuming that the average rate-distortion curve for an input source is logarithmic. This target bit allocation is based on Shannon's rate-distortion theory, which deals with the minimization of source distortion subject to a channel rate constraint. Simulation results show that the proposed target bit allocation algorithm provides better performance than the one in MPEG-2 Test Model 5 (TM5).

  • Effects of inlet distorted flow on performance, stall and surge are experimentally investigated for a high-speed centrifugal compressor. Tested results for the distorted inlet flow cases are compared with the result of the undistorted one. The performance of compressor is slightly deteriorated due to the inlet distortion. The inlet distortion does not affect the number of stall cell and the propagation velocity. It also does not change stall inception flow rate. However, as the distortion increases, stall starts at the higher flow rate for low speed and at the lower flow rate for high speed. For 50,000 rpm stall occurrs as the flow rate decreases, however disappears fur the smaller flow rate. This is due to the interaction of surge and stall. After the stall and surge interact, the number of stall cell decreases.

  • High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) is the newest video coding standard for improvement in video data compression. This new standard provides a significant improvement in picture quality, especially for high-resolution videos. A quadtree-based structure is created for the encoding and decoding processes and the rate-distortion (RD) cost is calculated for all possible dimensions of coding units in the quadtree. To get the best combination of the block an optimization process is performed in the encoder, called rate distortion optimization (RDO). In this work we are proposing a novel approach to enhance the overall RDO process of HEVC encoder. The proposed algorithm is performed in two steps. In the first step, like HEVC, it performs general rate distortion optimization. The second step is an extra checking where a SSIM based cost is evaluated. Moreover, a fast SSIM (FSSIM) calculation technique is also proposed in this paper.
