Reaction Route to the Crystallization of Copper Oxides

  • Copper is an important component from coin metal to electronic wire, integrated circuit, and to lithium battery. Copper oxides, mainly including $Cu_2O$ and CuO, are important semiconductors for the wide applications in solar cell, catalysis, lithium-ion battery, and sensor. Due to their low cost, low toxicity, and easy synthesis, copper oxides have received much research interest in recent year. Herein, we review the crystallization of copper oxides by designing various chemical reaction routes, for example, the synthesis of $Cu_2O$ by reduction route, the oxidation of copper to $Cu_2O$ or CuO, the chemical transformation of $Cu_2O$ to CuO, the chemical precipitation of CuO. In the designed reaction system, ligands, pH, inorganic ions, temperature were used to control both chemical reactions and the crystallization processes, which finally determined the phases, morphologies and sizes of copper oxides. Furthermore, copper oxides with different structures as electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries were also reviewed. This review presents a simple route to study the reaction-crystallization-performance relationship of Cu-based materials, which can be extended to other inorganic oxides.

희토류 산화물이 첨가된 YSZ 기반의 열차폐 코팅용 소재의 상 형성 및 기계적 특성 (Formation of Phases and Mechanical Properties of YSZ-Based Thermal Barrier Coating Materials Doped with Rare Earth Oxides)

  • This study focused on improving the phase stability and mechanical properties of yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ), commonly utilized in gas turbine engine thermal barrier coatings, by incorporating Gd2O3, Er2O3, and TiO2. The addition of 3-valent rare earth elements to YSZ can reduce thermal conductivity and enhance phase stability while adding the 4-valent element TiO2 can improve phase stability and mechanical properties. Sintered specimens were prepared with hot-press equipment. Phase analysis was conducted with X-ray diffraction (XRD), and mechanical properties were assessed with Vickers hardness equipment. The research results revealed that, except for Z10YGE10T, most compositions predominantly exhibited the t-phase. Increasing the content of 3-valent rare earth oxides resulted in a decrease in the monoclinic phase and an increase in the tetragonal phase. In addition, the t(400) angle decreased while the t(004) angle increased. The addition of 10 mol% of 3-valent rare-earth oxides discarded the t-phase and led to the complete development of the c-phase. Adding 10 mol% TiO2 increased hardness than YSZ.

Effects of Rare Earth Metals Addition and Aging Treatment on the Corrosion Resistance and Mechanical Properties of Super Duplex Stainless Steels

  • Effects of rare earth metals addition and aging treatment on corrosion resistance and mechanical properties of super duplex stainless steels were investigated using optical/SEM/TEM metallographic examination, an X-ray diffraction test, a potentiodynamic anodic polarization test and a tensile test. The performance of the experimental alloy with 0.32% REM addition was compared with commercial super duplex stainless steel such as SAF 2507 when they were exposed to solution annealing heat treatment and aging treatment. The corrosion resistance in CF environments and mechanical properties of the experimental alloy were found superior to those of the commercial duplex stainless steel. The REM with larger atomic radii than those of Cr, Mo and W may fill vacancies inside the matrix and around the grain boundaries, retarding formation of harmful intermetallic σ and χ phases. In addition, fine REM oxides/oxy-sulfides (1-3㎛) seemed to enhance the retardation effects. With REM additions, strength and ductility increased due to the phase and grain refinement caused by fine REM oxides and oxy-sulfides.

  • 소수성 코팅은 광범위하게 응용 가능하다. 희토류 금속 산화물(Rare earth oxides, REO)은 소수성 코팅 물질로써 우수한 열적 기계적 안정성으로 인해 전도유망하다. 본 연구는 원자층 증착법(Atomic layer deposition, ALD)을 이용한 나노 단위 두께의 희토류 금속 산화물 박막을 이용하여 소수성 코팅의 기초 연구이다. 미래 소수성 코팅 물질로써의 응용 가능성을 함께 다룬다.

  • Sulfurization of rare-earth oxides R203 (R=Nd, Eu) using sulfurizing reagents, such as $H_2S$ and $SC_2$was examined for the sulfide magnetic separation of spent fuel. $EU_2O_3$was found to react with H$_3$S gas forming the mixture of $EU_2O_2S$ and EuS at 500 oC, while EuS was formed by $SC_2$ at 800 oC. In the case of the mixture of $R_2O_3$and $UO_2$, EuS and $ND_3S_4$ were formed as well as $EU_2O_2S$ and $Nd_2O_2S$ at 500oC in $H_2S$, though $UO_2$ remained unreacted.

  • 희토류 금속 산화물(RE=Ce, Pr, Nd, Eu, Er)을 1wt% 첨가한 큐빅 $ZrO_2(10 mol% Y_2O_3)$단결정을 스컬법으로 육성하였다. 육성된 단결정의 (111) 면에서의 임피던스 분석에 의한 전기적 성질을 조사하였다. 낮은 온도($500^{\circ}C$)에서 온도와 전기전도도와의 관계를 plot하였으며 $약300-400^{\circ}C$ 사이에서 전이를 관찰하였다. 저온 (전이전)과 고온(전이후 $50^{\circ}C$까지)산소 vacancy 이동에 관한 활성화 에너지를 구하였으며 전이로 인한 활성화 에너지의 차이는 안정제로 첨가한 이트륨 이온과 희토류 dopant 그리고 산소 vacancy와의 defect complexes를 붕괴하고 이온전도에 참여하게되는 산소 vacancy 형성에 관한 활성화 에너지로 볼 수 있다. yttria가 첨가됨에 따라, 또 희토류 산화물들의 첨가에 따른 활성화 에너지를 구하였으면 이온전도기구를 논의하였다. 육성된 단결정들은 첨가된 dopantdp 기인하여 Ce은 orang-red, Pr은 golden-yellow, Nd는 lilac, Eu는 옅은 pink, Er은 pink색으로 발현하였으며 가시광선 영역에서 광흡수 결과로서 나타내었다.

  • Nanosized powders of trimetallic orthoferrites containing La and Sm in different ratios were synthesised by the thermal decomposition at low temperatures of the corresponding hexacyanocomplexes. The precursors and their decomposition products were analyzed by simultaneous thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis (TG/DTA), x-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. Single phase trimetallic precursors and oxides were obtained. The crystal structure of the perovskitic oxides was orthorhombic, and the lattice parameters were affected by the ionic size of the rare earth elements present in the oxides. Raman spectroscopy showed a disorder effect in the vibrational bands with increasing the La content.

  • 산화물 핵연료의 리튬환원공정에서 생성되는 $Li_2O$와 희토류원소 산화물($RE_2O_3$)의 화학적 반응을 밝혔다. 스칸듐, 이트륨, 프라세오디뮴, 네오디뮴, 사마륨, 유러퓸, 가돌리늄, 이테르븀 및 루테튬의 산화물은 각각 어떤 $Li_2O$의 임계농도 이상에서 $Li_2O$와 반응하여 복합산화물($LiREO_2$)을 형성하고, 이들 산화물이 복합산화물을 형성하는 각각의 $Li_2O$ 임계농도는 0.1 wt%, 1.9 wt%, 5.3 wt%, 5.0 wt%, 3.0 wt%, 3.9 wt%, 2.9 wt%, 2.6 wt% 및 0.3 wt%로 나타났다. $CeO_2$ 및 란타늄 산화물은 $Li_2O$와 반응하지 않는 것으로 나타났다. 실험에서 얻은 이들 희토류원소 복합산화물의 LiCl 용융염에 대한 용해도는 매우 작았다.

  • 모자나이트광에서 희토류원소(Y 및 Th포함)를 분리하여 X-선 형광분광법으로 정량하였다. 희토류원소간의 상호간섭이 있으므로 이를 메트릭스 계수를 이용한 실험계수법으로 보정하였다. 이 방법에서 표준시료의 수는 메트릭스 계수에는 큰 영향을 미치지만 분석결과는 큰 차이가 없었으며 유도결합플라스마 분광법에 의한 분석결과와 비교적 잘 일치하였다.
