  • This study was performed to investigate the flora and plant resources of Mt. Woosanbong (537.8 m) from April to October 2002. The collected vascular plants were composed of all 389 taxa including cultivated species, and classified into 329 species, 2 subspecies, 53 varieties, and 5 forms of 248 genera under 81 families. Six taxa of the Korean endemic plants and 4 taxa of the rare and endangered plants were also distributed in this mount. Resource plants were categorized into edible 181, pasturing 160, medicinal 136, stainable 94, ornamental 77, timber 22, fiber 5 and industrial 4 taxa, respectively. Floristic geography of the investigated area was regarded as the boundary between middle and southern parts in floristic pattern of the Korean Peninsula.

  • Myofibroblastic sarcoma is a rare tumor that mostly develops in the soft tissues of the head and neck. Within the oral cavity, a tongue lesion is the most common. A myofibroblastic sarcoma tends to recur locally instead of metastasizing. We encountered a myofibroblastic sarcoma of the mandible of a 9-year-old male and performed mass excision and additional marginal alveolectomy. So far, there is neither recurrence nor metastasis. We report this case because of the uncommon location of this tumor type and its surgical approach compared to other forms of sarcomas.

  • A species of moss (Musci) is observed on the Matanuska Glacier of Alaska in the middle of summer. The life cycle of the moss is perfectly observed. This is very rare and special because the environment is completely glacial and barren of plants. Matanuska is a gigantic glacier formed about 18,000 years ago in the Palmer region near Anchorage. It has a dimension of 27 miles in length and 4 miles in width. The glacier is located in the region between Anchorage and Mount McKinley. This huge glacier carved the Matanuska valley thousands of years ago. The mighty glacier also forms the Matanuska River. The summer weather is very changeable throughout the day: warm, cold, sunshiny, windy, cloudy, rainy, snowy, foggy, etc. The Arctic clouds move very quickly and create variable climates. So there are four seasons even in one day during the summer period of this region.

  • Neuroendocrine carcinomas are rare neoplasms of the hypopharynx. Neuroendocrine neoplasms are divided into four main types : carcinoid, atypical carcinoid, small cell carcinoma and paraganglioma. The diagnosis is primarily based on light microscopy and should be confirmed by immunohistochemical investigation. Small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the hypopharynx is extremely uncommon tumor and surgical results for this tumor have been disappointing. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy currently appear the most effective forms of therapy. We report our case of small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the hypopharynx with the brief review of literatures.

  • Listeria monocytogenes is one of the important causes of neonatal sepsis and listerial neonatal infection manifests in two forms : Early-onset sepsis syndrome, associated with spontaneous abortion, still birth, preterm labor, granulomatosis infantiseptica, respiratory distress, sepsis, hemodynamic compromise and late-onset listerosis mainly associated with meningitis. Cases of neonatal listerosis reported in Korea have been rare and all were full term newborns. We, herein, report a case of early-onset sepsis due to L. monocytogenes in a extremely low birth weight infant who were born in a critical condition and succumbed in the second day of life despite the intensive care.

  • Intralobar pulmonary sequestration is a rare congenital malformation characterized by a cystic portion of the lung that derives its arterial blood supply through aberrant vessel directly of systemic circulation. Two forms of pulmonary sequestration occur; intralobar sequestration is usually contained within the visceral pleura of a pulmonary lobe and its venous drainage to the pulmonary venous system. We presented on case of intralobar pulmonary sequestration with A-V fistula. The patient was 8 years old male and chief complaints are mild fever and exertional dyspnea. Aortogram revealed an aberrant artery originated from thoracic aorta just above the diaphragm and its vessel directly communicated pulmonary vein in sequestrated segment. At time of operation, sequestrated lobe measuring 6x5x5cm, well demarcated at the lower lobe was noted. Aberrant, measuring 1.0cm in diameter and 1cm in length and directly connected pulmonary vein. After division and ligation of the aberrant artery, only excision of sequestrated lobe was performed and complication is not during postoperative course.

  • Pulmonary aspergillosis is a relatively rare disease in Korea. Immune suppressive patients, resulting from misuse or long term therapy of antibiotics, steroid and anticancer chemotherapeutics tend to be vulnerable to pulmonary aspergillosis. This study is made to illustrate the clinical features, preoperative diagnosis and surgical role in the management is this diseases. In retrospective study of operative cases from May 1980 through July 1986, 10 cases were analysis. Hemoptysis and blood tinged sputum were the most common chief complaints. Major underlying pathology was cavitary lesion or bronchiectasis caused by pulmonary tuberculosis [5 cases]. 2 cases were disseminated form due to immune suppression. Anatomic location of lesion was in the upper lobe in half case. Systemic antifungal agent is helpful for invasive aspergillosis and Resection is the treatment of choice for localized fungus balls and symptomatic localized forms.

  • Small cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder is a rare tumor which occurs in about 0.48 % of all bladder tumors. We report cytologic features of small cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder in a 66-year-old man who had painless total gross hematuria, which was confirmed by partial cystectomy. In urine cytology, abundant tumor cells appeared in scattered and clustered forms in a bloody background. The tumor cells were small and uniform in size with a high nuclear/cytoplasmic ratio. The nuclei of the tumor cells were hyperchromatic, characteristically molded and showed inconspicuous nucleoli. The cytoplasms were scanty and pale blue.

  • This paper examines the episodes of some herbalists described in the various anthologies in the Joseon Dynasty. Especially the kernels of the stories, which have still considerable influence upon oriental medicine in my opinion, will be arranged in narrative style. Not to mention, it was not rare that in someone's huge collection of works only a few lines of clinical diagnosis and prescriptions could be found. But they are invaluable. In this respect, we are very fortunate in having medical contents in the anthologies such as Jisanjip, Igejip and Wanamjip. The result of the analysis is summarized as follows. First, the materials can be used to examine the level of the medicine at that times. Second, the records of clinical diagnosis and prescriptions in the anthologies are precious even at the present time. Third, it is confirmed that the herbalists of Joseon had handed down their remedies and also inherited at any forms. And most important, they had added their own recipes to that.
