We measured rare earth element and Zr concentrations of USGS granite standard material GSP-2 and GSJ granite standard material JG-1a to clarify the effect of zircon during rare earth element analysis using ICP-MS. We also measured rare-earth element and zirconium (Zr) contents of zircon from granite by acid-digestion methods using conventional teflon vial and pressure-bomb. The results show that acid-digestion using teflon vial dissolved ca. 50% of zircon compared to pressure-bomb method. The Zr contents of JG-1a and GSP-2 gave ca 50% of reference value. However, rare-earth element abundance of JG-1a and GSP-2 were similar to those of reference values. This suggests that the decomposition degree of zircon might give a negligible effect on a petrological and geochemical interpretation using chondritenormalized REE pattern.
Duwon meteorite was fallen on 23 November 1943 in Duwonmyeon, Goheung, Jeolanam-Do. We measured rare earth element abundance of Duwon meteorite by isotope dilution thermal ion mass spectrometry (ID-TIMS) and ICP-MS. As a result, except La and Ce, abundance of other rare earth element show a correspondence within 10% of error range. However, La and Ce show more than 70% in abundance, which is considered due to 1) experimental procedure or 2) inhomogeneity of sample. Leedey meteorite was fallen on 25 November 1943 in Dewey County, Oklahoma, USA. which suggested that fallen difference between Leedey and Duwon meteorites is only 2 days. Leedey and Duwon meteorites are classified as ordinary chondrite of L6 type. In Leedey chondrite-normalized REE pattern, Duwon meteorite shows nearly flattened, which suggests close relationship between Leedey and Duwon meteorites meteoritically or cosmochemically.
In order to determine the provenance of the Huksan Mud Belt sediments in the southeastern Yellow Sea, the major and rare earth elements of the same sediments were analyzed. The surface sediments were sampled from top of piston-cores and box-cores taken at 51 sites within the Huksan Mud Belt. With the mean grain size of $5-6{\phi}$, the sediments of the study area are mud-dominated. The spatial distribution patterns show that silt content is high in the northern Mud Belt, whereas clay content increases as it moves toward the southern Mud Belt. Interestingly, the geochemical compositions both of major and rare earth elements have resulted in differences of sediment provenance. Among the major elements, plots of Fe/Al vs. Mg/Al ratios, $Al_2O_3$ vs. MgO ratios, and $Al_2O_3$ vs. $K_2O$ reveal that the Huksan Mud Belt sediments are dominated by the Korean river-derived sediments. However, the characteristics of rare earth elements infer sediments originating from the Chinese rivers. This discrepancy between the above provenances is attributed to the different contributory factors in the content of chemical elements. Considering strong correlation between major elements with grain sizes, the contents of the major elements are thought to be influenced by the grain size. However, there is a weak correlation between rare earth elements and grain sizes. The behaviour of rare earth elements may be controlled by heavy minerals, rather than grain sizes. Further study requires to solve the discrepancy arose from the difference in applied chemical tracers.
A geochemical technique based on rare earth element geochemistry was used to clarity the source of the Asian dust (Yellow sand) in the Daejeon area. The Asian dusts were collected 4 times during 31th March- 2nd April and 25th May-27th May 2007. The Yellow sand shows PAAS (Post Archean Australian Shale)-normalized REE pattern of the flattened LREE and slightly depleted LREE without Eu anomaly, whereas the Daejeon soil has slightly enriched LREE and depleted HREE with negative Eu anomaly. Our results show that REE patterns of the Asian dust are LREE-flattened similar to those of the sediment from the south-eastern part of Ordos desert. This suggests that Asian dust in the Daejeon area might be derived from the south-eastern part of Ordos desert.
The Naedeokri and Nonggeori granites are early Proterozoic granites of the Taebaek-Sangdong area in the northeastern part of the Yeongnam Massif. In this paper, rare earth elements (REEs) concentrations of the minerals in Naedeokri and Nonggeori granites and Rb-Sr mineral isochron age are reported. Except zircon, the constituent minerals such as mica, feldspar, quartz, and tourmaline show LREE-enriched and HREE-depleted REE patterns with relatively large Eu negative anomaly. However, zircon has geochemical characteristic of LREE- and HREE-enriched REE pattern with large Eu positive anomaly. This pattern suggests that zircon should be hydrothermal zircon due to deuteric hydrothermal alteration. In addition, the Rb-Sr mineral age of Naedeokri granite indicates an age value of 1.814±142(2σ) Ma. The Rb-Sr whole rock age including pervious data of Naedeokri and Nogggeori granite indicates an age value of 1,707±74(2σ) Ma. This value is younger than the Sm-Nd isochron of 1.87 Ga, indicating that the Rb-Sr isotope system may be re-homogenized by hydrothermal alteration during the transition from a magmatic to a hydrothermal system.

Pan African granitoids of Kaiama is comprised of K-feldspar rich granites, porphyritic granites, and granitic gneiss that are intruded by quartz veins and aplitic veins and dykes which trend NE-SW. In order to establish the geochemical signatures, petrogenesis, and tectonic settings of the lithological units, petrological, petrographical, and geochemical studies was carried out. Petrographic analysis reveals that the granitoids are dominantly composed of quartz, plagioclase feldspar, biotite, and k-feldspar with occasional muscovites, sericite, and opaque minerals that constitute very low proportion. Major, trace, and rare earth elements geochemical data reveal that the rocks have moderate to high silica (SiO2=63-79.7%) and alumina (Al2O3=11.85-16.15) contents that correlate with the abundance of quartz, feldspars, and biotite. The rocks are calc-alkaline, peraluminous (ASI=1.0-<1.2), and S-type granitoids sourced by melting of pre-existing metasedimentary or sedimentary rocks containing Al, Na, and K oxides. They plot dominantly in the WPG and VAG fields suggesting emplacement in a post-collisional tectonic setting. On a multi-element variation diagram, the granitoids show depletion in Ba, K, P, Rb, and Ti while enrichment was observed for Th, U, Nd, Pb and Sm. Their rare-earth elements pattern is characterized by moderate fractionation ((La/Yb)N=0.52-38.24) and pronounced negative Eu-anomaly (Eu/Eu*=0.02-1.22) that points to the preservation of plagioclase from the source magma. Generally, the geochemical features of the granitoids show that they were derived by the partial melting of crustal rocks with some input from greywacke and pelitic materials in a typical post-collisional tectonic setting.
Here we discuss a geochemical characterisitc of rare earth element (REE) pattern of a Precambrain leucogranitic gneiss at Imweon, Gangwon Province, Korea. The outcrop includes biotite gneiss xenolith. The leucocratic granite gneiss contacting with biotite gneiss is pegmatitic. However, there is no evidence of contact metamorphism between biotite gneiss and leucocratic-pegmatitic granite gneiss. The leucocratic granite gneiss shows a specific phenomenon of M-type (convex curved) tetrad effect in chondrite-normalized REE patterns with large negative Eu anomaly. The degree of REE tetrad effect in the leucocratic-pegmatitic granitec gneiss is weak and shows partly W-type (concave curved) tetrad effect. The Eu anomaly of leucocratic granite gneiss has close relationship with the degree of tetrad effect as well as Ca/Sr ratio. Our results suggest that the REE tetrad effect from the leucocratic granite gneiss should be formed during differentiation process of granitic magma. We also confirmed that the weathering might affect Eu or Ce anomaly rather than the formation of REE tetrad effect in granitic rock.

The chemical composition distribution of the surface samples collected from the loess plateau in China were estimated. Major elements concentration distribution difference between 10 different sampling site were not found except sample 3. This sample had higher contents of Ca, Mg, LOI and lower contents of Si, Fe, P, Na, Ti. And also, minor element contents such as Ba, Cr, Nb, Pb, Rb, Zr, V were lower than other samples. UCC-normalized abundances of the most elements were within $0.5-1.5{\times}UCC$ and Cr showed enrichment aspect. Rare-earth element (REE) analysis results showed light REE enriched pattern compared to heavy REE with negative Eu anomaly in condrite-normalized REE pattern.

Crystallographic, electric, magnetic and heat transition properties of $\alpha$-Fe$_2$O$_3$ have been studied with a small addition of Eu impurities. Hematite($\alpha$-Fe$_2$O$_3$) is a basic ferromagnetic material having rhombohedral structure, which is similar to perovskites structure. Eu is a rare earth element that has an electric configuration of 4f$^{7}$ 6s$^2$. X-ray diffraction pattern of Fe$_{1-x}$ Eu$_{x}$O$_3$ (x = 0.00, 0.04, 0.06) shows an increament of a value when the amount of Eu impurities increased. The VSM data show an increment of magnetization by increasing the amount of Eu impurity. The one with x=0.06 shows the largest increment of magnetic remanence. The magnetic remanence varied from 0.49$\times$10$^{-3}$ emu/g to 0.62$\times$10$^{-3}$ emu/g when Eu impurity is increased by 2 %. Coercivity is decreased as Eu impurity is increased. Resistances is reduced significantly by Eu impurity. There is a clear difference in temperature-dependent resistance depending on the amount of Eu impurities. Especially, there are cusps between 150 K to 175 K. It indicates the change of electronic quantum states inside the atoms by rare earth impurities in rhombohedral structure. Temperature-dependent heat capacity shows that the most effective amount of Eu impurities is 6 %. %.
Petrological, mineralogical, and geochemical analyses were carried on the paleolithic obsidian implements excavated at Wolseongdong, Daegu, Korea. The obsidians has a homogeneous glassy texture that can be observed in a typical obsidian formed from a rapid cooling of silicic magma. Major element composition of the obsidians represent calc-alkaline series. Comparing those with other obsidians from domestic local excavation sites, Mt. Baekdu, and Kyusu of Japan, the Wolseongdong obsidians show similar element distribution pattern with others in spite of small difference in trace and rare Earth element contents. Sr isotopes of the obsidians considerably differ from those of the obsidians from southern part of the Korean Peninsula or from Mt. Baekdu. K-Ar age is approximately 30 Ma, which is much older than Mt. Baekdu (10 Ma). Therefore, considering the characteristics of obsidians found in the Korean Peninsula including mineralogy, petrology, trace element, and isotopes chronology, the obsidians can be divided into four groups: Mt. Baekdu, southern part of Korea (Kyusu of Japan), middle part of Korea, and Wolseongdong region. These groups suggest a possibility of more than four different origins of the obsidians found in the Korean Peninsular.
