Continuous casting process has been adopted increasingly in recent years to save both energy and labor. It has experienced a rapid development in the production of semi-finished steel products, rep lacing the conventional route of ingot casting and rolling. In order to achieve this merit, however, more studies about the mechanism between roll and slab are needed. In this paper, a dynamic bulging in steel cast slabs was simulated by considering the solidification and heat transfer. This study is to prevent internal cracks of a slab in a bending and unbending zone. The value of moving strand shell bulging between two supporting rollers under the ferrostatic pressure and slab-self weight has been calculated in terms of creep and elasto-plasticity. The strain and strain rate distributions in solidified shell undergoing a series of bulging are calculated with working boundary conditions.
Multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) aluminum composite powders were deposited to form coatings using a high velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) spraying process. High thermal energy and contact with atmospheric oxygen were supplied as the MWCNT aluminum composite particles were exposed to a gas flow field at high temperature (${\sim}3.0{\times}10^3$ K) during HVOF spraying. As a result, the particles underwent full or partial melting and rapid solidification due to the high thermal energy, and the exposure to oxygen induced the interfacial reaction of MWCNTs within the particle. The electrical and mechanical properties of MWCNT aluminum composite coatings were evaluated based on microstructure analysis. Electrical resistivity, elastic modulus, and micro-hardness, of the MWCNT aluminum composite coatings were higher than those of pure aluminum coating. The contribution of MWCNTs to the aluminum matrix can be attributed to their high electrical conductivity, dispersion hardening and anchoring effects. The relationship among the properties and the interaction of the MWCNTs with the aluminum matrix is discussed.
Ag-Cd alloy has been widely used as an electrical contact material, since Ag-Cd alloy has a good wear resistance and stable contact resistance. But nowadays Ag-Cd alloy is not considered as electrical contact material any more due to detrimental effect on environments. Currently, active researches are being performed on ($Ag-SnO_2$ and $Ag-SnO_{2}-In_{2}O_{3}$) as an alternative solution which can fix the remaining environmental problems. However, $In_{2}O_{3}$ is relatively expensive and Ag-Sn alloy has low wear resistance. Our recent research results show that Ag-X%Zn-Y%Sn has similar physical and chemical properties. In the present study, so we tried to change and to optimize the Zn oxide content to over 6 wt% and Sn oxide content with 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 wt%. Results obtained from the experiments on the Ag-X%ZnO-Y%$SnO_2$ are discussed.
To improve mechanical properties of Cu-Al-Ni alloy by the grain refinement, Cu-Al-Ni SMA ribbons were fabricated by melt spinning apparatus. The variations of microstructure, mechanical properties and transformation characteristics with the condition of rapid solidification and annealing time-temperature were investigated in Cu-Al-Ni SMA ribbons. The ribbons fabricated by melt spinning obtained around 1.5nm in width and 50-60${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in thickness. With increasing wheel speed in order of 10m/s, 15m/s, 20m/s, 30m/s and 3m/s, the grain size was decreased in order of 10${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, 6.25${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, 5.5${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, 3${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and 3${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. $M_{s}$ and $A_{s}$ temperature were decreased with decreasing grain size. By X-ray diffraction test, ordered $\beta$$_1$ phase was observed in all the SMA ribbons and the volume friction of it was increased with increasing wheel speed. With increasing wheel speed, strain was increased from 4.2% to 5.8% and fracture mode has changed from mixture of intergranular and dimple fracture to mixture of fiber structure and dimple fracture. The grain size of ribbon heat-treated at $600^{\circ}C$ was increased with increasing time. In the heat-treated ribbons at 55$0^{\circ}C$, ${\gamma}$$_2$ phases were observed.d.d.
Soft ferromagnetic materials are very useful for many sensors using magnetic materials demanding high permeability, low coercivity and low hysteresis loss. Among them, FeCoSiBNi amorphous magnetic films show a good impedance change (about 5.01 %/Oe, at 10 MHz) by the exterinal magnetic field in this experiment. The magnetic films are produced by melt-spun method, one of the rapid solidification process. Ribbon shape wires were made from the films, and let them annealed in DC magnetic field to increase the maximum Giant Magneto Impedance ratio. Field annealing decreases the stress and changes the effective anisotropy. Thus, we can find that the impedance change (200.47 %) is improved and the fabricated magnetic wire has characteristics of good sensor element.
In the planar flow casting(PFC) process, the conditions of the melt puddle between nozzle and rotating wheel affect significantly the quality and dimensional uniformity of the downstream ribbon. For stable puddle formation, the nozzle is placed very close to the quenching wheel, so the surface-tension and wall-adhesion forces have an important effect upon the fluid flow.\`In this study the planar flow casting process has been mode]ed using the VOF method for free surface tracking. The transient puddle formation from the present analysis shows good agreements with the previous experimental results. Furthermore, the variation of melt temperature and the corresponding cooling rate of the melt have been examined. The present results also show how the melt puddle can be farmed on the rotating substrate, how the melt flows within the puddle, and how the changes of the process variables affect the puddle formation and its corresponding fluid flow and heat transfer behavior.

Generally, the build-up printed circuit board manufactured by a sequential process involving etching, plating, drilling, etc, which requires many types of equipments and long lead time. Etching process is suitable for mass production, however, it is not adequate for manufacturing a prototype in the development stage. In this study, we introduce a screen printing technology for prototyping a build-up printed circuit board. As for the material, photo/thermal curable resin and conductive paste are used for the formation of dielectric and conductor. The build-up structure is made by subsequent processes such as formation of a liquid resin thin layer, solidification by a UV/IR light, and via hole filling with a conductive paste. By use of photo curable resin, productivity is greatly enhanced compared with thermal curable resin. Finally, the basic concept and the possibility of build-up printed circuit board prototyping are proposed in comparison with the conventional process.
The effects of Cu and Fe additions on the thermal stability, microstructure and mechanical properties of $Al_{85}-Ni_{8.5}-Mm_{6.5},\;Al_{84}-Ni_{8.5}-Mm_{6.5}Cu_1,\;Al_{84}-Ni_{8.5}-M_{m6.5}Fe_1$ alloys, manufactured by gas atomization, degassing and hot-extrusion were investigated. Gas atomization, with a wide super-cooled liquid region, allowed the alloy powders to exhibit varying microstructure depending primarily on the powder size and composition. Al hotextruded alloys consisted of homogeneously-distributed fine-grained fcc-Al matrix and intermetallic compounds. A substitution of 1 at.% Al by Cu increased the thermal stability of the amorphous phase and produced alloy microstructure with smaller fcc-Al grains. On the other hand, the same substitution of 1 at.% Al by Fe decreased the stability of the amorphous phase and produced larger fcc-Al grains. The formation of intermetallic compounds such as $Al_3Ni,\;Al_{11}Ce_3\;and\;Al_{11}La_3$ was suppressed by the addition of Cu or Fe. Among the three alloys examined, the highest Vickers hardness and compressive strength were obtained for $Al_{84}-Ni_{8.5}-M_{m6.5}Cu_1$ alloy, and related to the finest fcc-Al grain size attained from increased thermal stability with Cu addition.
A numerical analysis on the microstructural evolutions of microcellular and cellular ${\alpha}-aluminum$ phase in the gas-atomized Al-8wt. pct droplets was represented. The 2-dimensional non-Newtonian heat transfer and the dendritic growth theory in the undercooled melt were combined under the assumptions of a point nucleation on droplet surface and the macroscopically smooth solid-liquid interface enveloping the cell tips. It reproduced the main characteristic features of the reported microstructures quite well. It predicted a considerable volume fraction of segregation-free region in a droplet smaller than $l0{\mu}m$ if an initial undercooling larger than 100K is given. The volume fractions of the microcellular region($g_A$) and the sum of the microcellular and cellular region($g_a$) were predicted as functions of the heat transfer coefficient, h and initial undercooling, ${\triangle}T$. It was shown that $g_A$ and $g_a$, in the typical gas-atomization processes with $h=0.1-1.0W/cm^2K$, are dominated by ${\triangle}T$ and h, respectively, but for h larger than $4.0W/cm^2K$, a fully microcellular structure can be obtained irrespective of the initial undercooling.
SiC particulate reinforced magnesium matrix composites were fabricated by melt stirring method. The effet of several factors on mechanical properties and the efficiency of melt stirring method from the viewpoint of these properties were investigated. The tensile strength increased and the elongation decreased with decrease of the particle size or the increase of the paticulate volume fraction for pure magnesium matrix and Mg-5%Zn alloy matrix composites. A longer stirring time improved the tensile strength of these composites. The tensile strength of Mg-5%Ca alloy matrix composites which shows no uniform paticulate distribution was a little lower than that of matrix alloy. Rapid solidification rate is preferred for the improved tensile strength of these composites. The pure magnesium matrix and Mg-5%Zn alloy matrix composites have tensile strength of about 400MPa. This value agrees with the tensile strength of some magnesium matrix composites fabricated by liquid infiltration method or powder metallurgy method at the same volume fraction of reinforcements of whisker or particle. Therefore, the melt stirring method which has the advantages of simple process is considered to be efficient in fabricating magnesium matrix composites.
