  • In this paper we consider the variable structure control for a class of discrete-time uncertain multivariable systems where the nominal system is linear. Discrete-time switching dynamics are introduced so that a new type of state trajectories called sliding mode may exist on the sliding surface by state feedback. The quantitative analysis for the matched uncertainties will show that every response of the system with the proposed switching dynamics is bounded within small neighborhoods of the state-space origin. Also, by the similarity transformation it will be shown that the eigenvalues of the closed-loop systems are composed of those of the subsystems which govern the range-space dynamics and null-space dynamics. It will be also shown that ideal sliding mode can be obtained in the absence of uncertainties due to one-step attraction to the sliding surface regardless of initial position of states. • This paper presents the design of simple robust controller for a class of uncertain multivariable systems. We introduce switching dynamics instead of switching logics unlike variable structure control scheme. Also, we can construct the continuous control law from this switching dynamics and consequently remove the chattering motion. The dynamic equations of the range-space of a switching surface matrix C and uniform ultimate boundedness in the presence of parameter uncertainties are described mathematically.

  • An attitude control problem for a tethered spacecraft is studied. The tethered spacecraft is viewed as a multi-body spacecraft consisting of a base body, a massless tether that connects the base body and an end mass, and tether actuator dynamics. Moments about the pitch and roll axes of the base spacecraft arise by control of the point of attachment of the tether to the base spacecraft. The control objective is to stabilize the attitude of the base spacecraft while keeping the perturbations of the tether small. Analysis shows that linear equations of motion for the tethered spacecraft are not completely controllable. We study two different control design approaches: (1) we decouple the attitude dynamics from the tether dynamics and we design a linear feedback to achieve stabilization of the attitude dynamics, and (2) we decouple the controllable modes from the uncontrollable mode using Kalman decomposition and we design a linear feedback to achieve stabilization of the controllable modes. Simulation results show that, although it is difficult to control the tether, the tether motion can be maintained within an acceptable range while stabilizing the attitude dynamics of the base spacecraft.

  • A collision-free formation reconfiguration trajectory subject to the linearized Hill's dynamics of relative motion is analytically developed by extending an algorithm for gravity-free space. Based on the initial solution without collision avoidance constraints, the final solution to minimize the designated performance index and avoid collision is found, based on a gradient method. Simple simulations confirm that satellites reconfigure their positions along the safe trajectories, while trying to spend minimum energies. The algorithm is applicable to wide range of formation flying under the Hill's dynamics.

  • The Ozone Dynamics Investigation Nano-Satellite (ODIN) is a CubeSat design proposed by Chungnam National University as contribution to the CubeSat Competition 2019 sponsored by the Korean Aerospace Research Institute (KARI). The main objectives of ODIN are (1) to observe the polar ozone column density (latitude range of 60° to 80° in both hemispheres) and (2) to investigate the chemical dynamics between stratospheric ozone and ozone depleting substances (ODSs) through spectroscopy of the terrestrial atmosphere. For the operation of ODIN, a highly efficient power system designed for the specific orbit is required. We present the conceptual structural design of ODIN and an analysis of power generation in a sun synchronous orbit (SSO) using two different configurations of 3U solar panels (a deployed model and a non-deployed model). The deployed solar panel model generates 189.7 W through one day which consists of 14 orbit cycles, while the non-deployed solar panel model generates 152.6 W. Both models generate enough power for ODIN and the calculation suggests that the deployed solar panel model can generate slightly more power than the non-deployed solar panel model in a single orbit cycle. We eventually selected the non-deployed solar panel model for our design because of its robustness against vibration during the launch sequence and the capability of stable power generation through a whole day cycle.

  • This paper presents results for impedance (and compliance) functions and input motions of foundations in a layered half-space computed on the basis of a procedure that combines a consistent transmitting boundary with continued-fraction absorbing boundary conditions which are accurate and effective in modeling wave propagation in various unbounded domains. The effects of obliquely incident seismic waves in a layered half-space are taken into account in the formulation of the transmitting boundary. Using the numerical model, impedance (and compliance) functions and input motions of rigid circular foundations on the surface of or embedded in a homogeneous half-space are computed and compared with available published results for verification of the procedure. Extrapolation methods are proposed to improve the performance in the very-low-frequency range and for the static condition. It is concluded from the applications that accurate analysis of foundation dynamics and soil-structure interaction in a layered half-space can be carried out using the enhanced consistent transmitting boundary and the proposed extrapolations.

  • This paper describes a result of the guidance and control for re-entry vehicle during TAEM phase. TAEM phase (Terminal Aerial Energy Management phase) has many conditions, such as density, velocity, and so on. Under these conditions, we have optimized trajectory and other states for guidance in TAEM phase. The optimized states consist of 7 variables, down-range, cross range, altitude, velocity, flight path angle, vehicle's azimuth and flight range. We obtained the optimized reference trajectory by DIDO tool, and used feedback linearization with neural network for control re-entry vehicle. By back propagation algorithm, vehicle dynamics is approximated to real one. New command can be decided using the approximated dynamics, delayed command input and plant output, NARMA-L2. The result by this control law shows a good performance of tracking onto the reference trajectory.

  • The sealed, tuned liquid column gas damper (TLCGD) with gas-spring effect extends the frequency range of application up to about 5 Hz and efficiently increases the modal structural damping. In this paper the influence of several TLCGDs to reduce coupled translational and rotational vibrations of plan-asymmetric buildings under wind or seismic loads is investigated. The locations of the modal centers of velocity of rigidly assumed floors are crucial to select the design and the optimal position of the liquid absorbers. TLCGD's dynamics can be derived in detail using the extended non-stationary Bernoulli's equation for moving reference systems. Modal tuning of the TLCGD renders the optimal parameters by means of a geometrical transformation and in analogy to the classical tuned mass damper (TMD). Subsequently, fine-tuning is conveniently performed in the state space domain. Numerical simulations illustrate a significant reduction of the vibrations of plan-asymmetric buildings by the proposed TLCGDs.

  • In liquid hydrogen storage tanks, tank damage or leakage in the surrounding pipes possess a major risk. Since these tanks store huge amounts of the fluid among all the liquid hydrogen process facilities, there is a high risk of leakage-related accidents. Therefore, in this study, we conducted a risk assessment of liquid hydrogen leakage for a grid-type liquid hydrogen storage tank (lattice-type pressure vessel (LPV): 18 m3) that overcame the low space efficiency of the existing pressure vessel shape. Through a commercially developed three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics program, the geometry of the site, where the liquid hydrogen storage tank will be installed, was obtained and simulations of the leakage scenarios for each situation were performed. From the computational flow analysis results, the pool formation behavior in the event of liquid hydrogen leakage was identified, and the resulting damage range was predicted.
