Derivation of a benchmark dose lower bound of lead for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder using a longitudinal data set (경시적 자료의 주의력 결핍 과잉행동 장애를 종점으로 한 납의 벤치마크 용량 하한 도출)

  • This paper is to reproduce the result of Kim et al. (2014) by deriving a benchmark dose lower bound (BMDL) of lead based on the 2005 cohort data set of Children's Health and Environmental Research (CHEER) data set. The ADHD rating scales in the 2005 cohort were not consistent along the three follow-ups since two different ADHD rating scales were used in the cohort. We first unified the ADHD rating scales in the 2005 cohort by deriving a conversion formula using a penalized linear spline. We then constructed two linear mixed models for the 2005 cohort which reflected the longitudinal characteristics of the data set. The first model introduced the random intercept and the random slope terms and the second model assumed the first order autoregressive structure of the error term. Using these two models, we derived the BMDLs of lead and reconfirmed the "regression to the mean" nature of the ADHD score discovered by Kim et al. (2014). We also noticed that there was a definite difference between the sampling distributions of the two cohorts. As a result, taking this difference into account, we were able to obtain the consistent result with Kim et al. (2014).

Analysis of factors influencing the travel mode choice of bicycle by trip purpose -a case study of Seoul (통행목적별 자전거 통행수단 선택에 영향을 미치는 요인 분석 -서울시를 대상으로)

  • This study analyzed the bicycle traffic patterns and identified the influence factors for each traffic purpose using the household traffic conditions survey for Seoul. The results are summarized as follows. First, as a result of surveying the bicycle traffic ratios according to the administrative dongs, there was a difference of 14.2% by region. Second, various personal characteristic variables, such as age, gender, income, occupation, and housing type, affect the bicycle mode choice, and bicycle passage increases when using facilities in residential areas. Third, among the neighborhood environments, the bicycle traffic for commuting purposes appeared to increase more in the areas of higher land use mix and lower crime rates. In addition, the bicycle road density and the inclination of the area commonly affect bicycle travel for commuting, shopping, exercising, and leisure.

Thermo-mechanical properties in bending of a multizone nickel-titanium archwire: A retrieval analysis

  • Objective: This study aimed to compare the mechanical and thermal properties in the anterior and posterior segments of new and retrieved specimens of a commercially available multizone superelastic nickel-titanium (NiTi) archwire. Methods: The following groups of 0.016 × 0.022-inch Bioforce NiTi archwires were compared: a) anterior and b) posterior segments of new specimens and c) anterior and d) posterior segments of retrieved specimens. Six specimens were evaluated in each group, by three-point bending and bend and free recovery tests. Bending moduli (Eb) were calculated. Furthermore, the new specimens were evaluated with scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry. A multiple linear regression model with a random intercept at the wire level was applied for data analysis. Results: The forces in the posterior segments or new specimens were higher than those recorded in the anterior segments or retrieved specimens, respectively. Accordingly, Eb also varied. Higher austenite start and austenite finish (Af) temperatures were recorded in the anterior segments. No statistically significant differences were found for these temperatures between retrieved and new wires. The mean elemental composition was (weight percentage): Ni, 52.6 ± 0.5; Ti, 47.4 ± 0.5. Conclusions: The existence of multiple force zones was confirmed in new and retrieved Bioforce archwires. The retrieved archwires demonstrated lower forces during the initial stages of deactivation in three-point bending tests, compared with new specimens. The Af temperature of these archwires may lie higher than the regular intraoral temperature. Even at 2 mm deflections, the forces recorded from these archwires may lie beyond biologically safe limits.
