  • This study aims to evaluate the feasibility of an early warning system for college dropout by machine learning the main patterns that affect college student dropout and to suggest ways to implement a system that can actively prevent it. For this purpose, a performance comparison experiment was conducted using five types of machine learning-based algorithms using data from the Korean Educational Longitudinal Study, 2005, conducted by the Korea Educational Development Institute. As a result of the experiment, the identification accuracy rate of students with the intention to drop out was up to 94.0% when using Random Forest, and the recall rate of students with the intention of dropping out was up to 77.0% when using Logistic Regression. It was measured. Lastly, based on the highest prediction model, we will provide counseling and management to students who are likely to drop out, and in particular, we will apply factors showing high importance by characteristic to the counseling method model. This study seeks to implement a model using IT technology to solve the career problems faced by college students, as dropout causes great costs to universities and individuals.

  • A main goal of pharmacogenomics studies is to predict individual's drug responsiveness based on high dimensional genetic variables. Due to a large number of variables, feature selection is required in order to reduce the number of variables. The selected features are used to construct a predictive model using machine learning algorithms. In the present study, we applied several hybrid feature selection methods such as combinations of logistic regression, ReliefF, TurF, random forest, and LASSO to a next generation sequencing data set of 400 epilepsy patients. We then applied the selected features to machine learning methods including random forest, gradient boosting, and support vector machine as well as a stacking ensemble method. Our results showed that the stacking model with a hybrid feature selection of random forest and ReliefF performs better than with other combinations of approaches. Based on a 5-fold cross validation partition, the mean test accuracy value of the best model was 0.727 and the mean test AUC value of the best model was 0.761. It also appeared that the stacking models outperform than single machine learning predictive models when using the same selected features.

  • This study aims to develop a regression model for forest volume estimation using field-collected forest inventory information and airborne LiDAR data. The response variable of the model is forest stem volume, was measured by random sampling from each individual plot of the 30 circular sample plots collected in Bonghwa-gun, Gyeong sangbuk-do, while the predictor variables for the model are Height Percentiles(HP) and Height Bin(HB), which are metrics extracted from raw LiDAR data. In order to find the most appropriate model, the candidate models are constructed from simple linear regression, quadratic polynomial regression and multiple regression analysis and the cross-validation tests were conducted for verification purposes. As a result, $R^2$ of the multiple regression models of $HB_{5-10}$, $HB_{15-20}$, $HB_{20-25}$, and $HBgt_{25}$ among the estimated models was the highest at 0.509, and the PRESS statistic of the simple linear regression model of $HP_{25}$ was the lowest at 122.352. $HB_{5-10}$, $HB_{15-20}$, $HB_{20-25}$, and $HBgt_{25}-based$ models, thus, are comparatively considered more appropriate for Korean forests with complicated vertical structures.

  • Fog may have a significant impact on road conditions. In an attempt to improve fog predictability in Jeju, we conducted machine learning with various data mining techniques such as tree models, conditional inference tree, random forest, multinomial logistic regression, neural network and support vector machine. To validate machine learning models, the results from the simulation was compared with the fog data observed over Jeju(184 ASOS site) and Gosan(185 ASOS site). Predictive rates proposed by six data mining methods are all above 92% at two regions. Additionally, we validated the performance of machine learning models with WRF (weather research and forecasting) model meteorological outputs. We found that it is still not good enough for operational fog forecast. According to the model assesment by metrics from confusion matrix, it can be seen that the fog prediction using neural network is the most effective method.

  • This study investigates the efficiencies of machine learning models, including artificial neural network (ANN), generalized regression neural network (GRNN), adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) and random forest (RF), for reservoir water level forecasting in the Chungju Dam, South Korea. The models' efficiencies are assessed based on model efficiency indices and graphical comparison. The forecasting results of the models are dependent on lead times and the combination of input variables. For lead time t = 1 day, ANFIS1 and ANN6 models yield superior forecasting results to RF6 and GRNN6 models. For lead time t = 5 days, ANN1 and RF6 models produce better forecasting results than ANFIS1 and GRNN3 models. For lead time t = 10 days, ANN3 and RF1 models perform better than ANFIS3 and GRNN3 models. It is found that ANN model yields the best performance for all lead times, in terms of model efficiency and graphical comparison. These results indicate that the optimal combination of input variables and forecasting models depending on lead times should be applied in reservoir water level forecasting, instead of the single combination of input variables and forecasting models for all lead times.

  • In insurance, the surrender rate is an important variable that threatens the sustainability of insurers and determines the profitability of the contract. Unlike other actuarial assumptions that determine the cash flow of an insurance contract, however, it is characterized by endogenous variables such as people's economic, social, and subjective decisions. Therefore, a microscopic approach is required to identify and analyze the factors that determine the lapse rate. Specifically, micro-level characteristics including the individual, demographic, microeconomic, and household characteristics of policyholders are necessary for the analysis. In this study, we select panel survey data of Korean Retirement Income Study (KReIS) with many diverse dimensions to determine which variables have a decisive effect on the lapse and apply the lasso regularized regression model to analyze it empirically. As the data contain many missing values, they are imputed using the random forest method. Among the household variables, we find that the non-existence of old dependents, the existence of young dependents, and employed family members increase the surrender rate. Among the individual variables, divorce, non-urban residential areas, apartment type of housing, non-ownership of homes, and bad relationship with siblings increase the lapse rate. Finally, among the financial variables, low income, low expenditure, the existence of children that incur child care expenditure, not expecting to bequest from spouse, not holding public health insurance, and expecting to benefit from a retirement pension increase the lapse rate. Some of these findings are consistent with those in the literature.

  • Care services are a significant asset in human life. Care in its overall nature focuses on human needs and covers several aspects such as health care, homes, personal care, and education. In fact, care deals with many dimensions: physical, psychological, and social interconnections. Very little information is available on estimating the cost of care services that provided to orphans and abandoned children. Prediction of the cost of the care system delivered by governmental or non-governmental organizations to support orphans and abandoned children is increasingly needed. The purpose of this study is to analyze the care cost for orphanage organizations in Saudi Arabia to forecast the cost as well as explore the most influence factor on the cost. By using business analytic process that applied statistical and machine learning techniques, we proposed a model includes simple linear regression, Naive Bayes classifier, and Random Forest algorithms. The finding of our predictive model shows that Naive Bayes has addressed the highest accuracy equals to 87% in predicting the total care cost. Our model offers predictive approach in the perspective of business analytics.
