A Study of the Effect using Ramp Waveform on the Address Period of Address Display Separated Operating in ac Plasma Display Panel (AC-PDP의 ADS 구동방식에서 어드레스 구간에 기울기파를 사용한 효과에 관한 연구)

  • As a driving method of AC-PDP, Address-Display Separated(ADS) driving has been widely adopted for its simple architecture and low discharge failure rate. However, a high definition like a HDTV has defect of long addressing time by reason of a number of pixels. Priming effect isn't fully sustained because of long addressing time during the address period. Therefore, it has different wall charge and luminance of each addressing time in the sustain period. In this study, we suggest a new driving waveform on the address period to improve these defects. We applied a ramp waveform, instead of a square waveform, to an address period in ADS, for operating on the AC-PDP, which used the conventional gas [He-Ne-Xe]. When the ramp waveform is applied to the address period, we experimented for uniform wall charge and the improved luminance by sustained Priming effect at each addressing time in the sustain period.

Free-strain solutions for two-dimensional consolidation with sand blankets under multi-ramp loading

  • To analyze the consolidation with horizontal sand drains, the plane strain consolidation model under multi-ramp loading is established, and its corresponding analytical solution is derived by using the separation of variables method. The proposed solution is verified by the field measurement data and finite element results. Then, the effects of the loading mode and stress distribution on consolidation and dissipation of pore pressure are investigated. At the same time, the influence of hydraulic conductivity and thickness of sand blankets on soil consolidation are also analyzed. The results show that the loading mode has a significant effect on both the soil consolidation rate and generation-dissipation process of pore water pressure. In contrast, the influence of stress distribution on pore pressure dissipation is obvious, while its influence on soil consolidation rate is negligible. To guarantee the fully drained condition of the sand blanket, the ratio of hydraulic conductivity of the sand blanket to that of clay layer kd/kv should range from 1.0×104 to 1.0×106 with soil width varying from 100 m to 1000 m. A larger soil width correspondingly needs a greater value of kd/kv to make sure that the pore water can flow through the sand blanket smoothly with little resistance. When the soil width is relatively small (e.g., less than 100 m), the effect of thickness of the sand blanket on soil consolidation is insignificant. And its influence appears obvious gradually with the increase of the soil width.

Development of FEMAXI-ATF for analyzing PCMI behavior of SiC cladded fuel under power ramp conditions

  • FEMAXI-ATF is being developed for fuel performance modeling of SiC cladded UO2 fuel with focuses on modeling pellet-cladding mechanical interactions (PCMI). The code considers probability distributions of mechanical strengths of monolithic SiC (mSiC) and SiC fiber reinforced SiC matrix composite (SiC/SiC), while it models pseudo-ductility of SiC/SiC and propagation of cladding failures across the wall thickness direction in deterministic manner without explicitly modeling cracks based on finite element method in one-dimensional geometry. Some hypothetical BWR power ramp conditions were used to test sensitivities of different model parameters on the analyzed PCMI behavior. The results showed that propagation of the cladding failure could be modeled by appropriately reducing modulus of elasticities of the failed wall element, so that the mechanical load of the failed element could be re-distributed to other intact elements. The probability threshold for determination of the wall element failure did not have large influence on the predicted power at failure when the threshold was varied between 25 % and 75 %. The current study is still limited with respect to mechanistic modeling of SiC failure as it only models the propagation of the cladding wall element failure across the homogeneous continuum wall without considering generations and propagations of cracks.

  • Reactive or unstable adsorbates are often difficult to study spectroscopically. They may have, for instance, resonance states lying close to the Fermi level, inducing them to desorb or decompose by the probe itself, low-energy tunneling electrons. In order to overcome this limitation, we developed a novel method, which we call x-ramp scan. The method sweeps the bias voltage, with the simutaneous scan along the imaging direction, in a constant current mode. This mapping yields the tip-height variation as a function of bias, or Z(V), at nominally always fresh surface. We applied this method to the investigation of methanol-induced molecular features, attributed to methoxy, found on NiAl(110) surface. These were produced by methanol molecules deposited by a pulse injection method onto the metallic surface. Our study shows adsorbed methoxy are very reactive to the bias voltage, rendering the standard spectroscopy useless. Our new x-ramp scan shows that the decomposition of adsorbates occurs at the sample bias of 3.63 V, and proceeds with the lifetime of a few milliseconds. Increasing Superelevation on Freeway Interchange Ramp based on Running Speed (주행속도를 고려한 고속도로 나들목 연결로의 편경사 상향조정에 관한 연구)

  • OBJECTIVES : Many roadway departure crashes on the freeway interchange are due to the running speed being greater than the design speed. This study aims to ensure a safe and pleasant driving experience for the driver by increasing the superelevation based on the running speed on the highway interchange ramp. METHODS : The mean running speed for each type of ramp is calculated on site survey more than 10 interchanges. Using the mean running speed, we calculated the superelevation and the side friction using the method given in "A Policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Street" (Pages 145-166, 2001). Then, we applied the modified method to the superelevation range. Finally, we ensured safety using the Degree of Safety that is proven by the centrifugal acceleration ratio as suggested by Joseph Craus (1978). RESULTS : The mean running speeds are 50 km/h and 65 km/h when the design speeds are 40 km/h and 50 km/h, respectively. After the application of the new method used in this study, the superelevation will be increased by 9.0% and 10.0% when the mean running speeds are 50 km/h and 65 km/h, respectively. CONCLUSIONS : A higher superelevation can give the driver a more comfortable and safe driving environment. However, the driver needs to be aware of snow and low-temperature conditions.

Evaluation of electrical impedance ratio measurements in accuracy of electronic apex locators

  • Objectives: The aim of this paper was evaluating the ratios of electrical impedance measurements reported in previous studies through a correlation analysis in order to explicit it as the contributing factor to the accuracy of electronic apex locator (EAL). Materials and Methods: The literature regarding electrical property measurements of EALs was screened using Medline and Embase. All data acquired were plotted to identify correlations between impedance and log-scaled frequency. The accuracy of the impedance ratio method used to detect the apical constriction (APC) in most EALs was evaluated using linear ramp function fitting. Changes of impedance ratios for various frequencies were evaluated for a variety of file positions. Results: Among the ten papers selected in the search process, the first-order equations between log-scaled frequency and impedance were in the negative direction. When the model for the ratios was assumed to be a linear ramp function, the ratio values decreased if the file went deeper and the average ratio values of the left and right horizontal zones were significantly different in 8 out of 9 studies. The APC was located within the interval of linear relation between the left and right horizontal zones of the linear ramp model. Conclusions: Using the ratio method, the APC was located within a linear interval. Therefore, using the impedance ratio between electrical impedance measurements at different frequencies was a robust method for detection of the APC.

Investigation of Oswatitsch Scheme for Maximum Total Pressure Recovery of Hypersonic Wedge-type Intakes (극초음속 쐐기형 흡입구의 최대 전압력 회복률을 위한 오스와치 기법 분석)

  • In order to improve the performance of the air breathing engines, it is important to maximize the total pressure recovery through air intake. In this study, we investigated whether the Oswatitsch method, which guarantees the maximum pressure recovery for supersonic intake, is effective at hypersonic speed by compressing the intake air with the same intensity at each ramp. The non-linearity of the shock wave normal Mach number at each ramp stage was analyzed by comparing the compression ramp angle and the number of ramp to the inflow Mach number in terms of compressible thermodynamics and the operation limits of the inlet. Based on this analysis, the Oswaitisch technique yields valid conditions not only in supersonic but also hypersonic flight regime.

Color Correction for Projected Image on Light Colored Screen using a Still Camera (카메라를 사용한 유색 스크린에 투영된 영상의 색 보정 기법)

  • Recently, the use of portable projector expands applications to meeting at fields. Accordingly, the projection is not always guaranteed on white screen, causing some color distortion. Several algorithms have been suggested to correct the projected color on the light colored screen. These have limitation on the use of measurement equipment which can't bring always. In this paper, color correction method using general still camera as convenient measurement equipment is proposed to match the colors between on white and colored screens. A patch containing 9 ramps of each channel are firstly projected on white and colored screens, then captured by the camera, respectively, Next, digital values are obtained by the captured image for each ramp patch on both screens, resulting in different values to the same patch. After that, we check which ramp patch on colored screen has the same digital value on white screen, repeating this procedure for all ramp patches. The difference between corresponding ramp patches reveals the quantity of color shift. Then, color correction matrix is obtained by regression method using matched values. In the experimental results, the proposed method gives better color correction on the objective and subjective evaluation than the previous methods.

  • Since most of small form-factor drives have a load/unload mechanism and the flying height of the head is getting lower as the capacity of disk drives increases, the load/unload velocity becomes one of the important factors to ensure the reliability of the load/unload mechanism. To control the load/unload velocity accurately, velocity sensing is essential. In this paper, we introduce a very practical method that acquires the load/unload velocity from the back electromotive force (BEMF) of a voice coil motor (VCM) and propose a calibration method for measuring the BEMF from a given circuit. Moreover, the effect of calibration error and temperature variation on the measurement of BEMF is shown by simulation. Then, this present method is applied to the load/unload velocity controller and is verified from the experimental result.

Effects of Panel Temperature on the Discharge Characteristics of Micro Discharge Cells

  • The effects of ambient temperature on the discharge characteristics of Ne-Xe based micro discharge cells for ac-PDP (plasma display panel) have been studied. In ramp voltage driving, which is generally used as a reset method of PDP, two dissimilar modes of strong and weak discharge were found. As the interval between the former sustaining discharge and ramp voltage discharge becomes greater, the probability of a strong discharge increases. This suggests that a sufficient number of priming particles is necessary for initiating weak mode (Townsend discharge). It was discovered that under higher ambient temperatures, weak discharge occurs more frequently. The discharge time lag observed in square pulse driving of single cells becomes surprisingly smaller under higher ambient temperatures for the constant gas number density condition.
