  • Plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) is commonly used for Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) fabrication, and the process can easily be applied to industrial production lines. In this works, we developed novel magnetized radio frequency PECVD system for one line process of CNTs fabrication for charge storable electrode application. The system incorporates aspects of physical and chemical vapor deposition using capacitive coupled RF plasma and magnetic confinement coils. Using this magnetized RF-PECVD system, we firstly deposited Fe layer (about 200[nm]) on Si substrate by sputter method at the temperature of 300[$^{\circ}$] and hence prepared CNTs on the Fe catalyst layer and investigated fundamental properties by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Raman spectroscopy (RS). High-density, aligned CNTs can be grown on Fe/Si substrates at the temperature of 600[$^{\circ}$] or less.

  • In this work, we demonstrated a facile and effective method for deposition of metal tetraphenylporphyrin (MTPP) thin film by a combined a thermal evaporation (TE) and atomic layer deposition (ALD). For the deposition of Zn-TPP thin film, Tetraphenylporphyrin (TPP) and diethyl zinc (DEZ) were used as organic and inorganic materials, respectively. Optimum conditions for the deposition of Zn-TPP thin film were established systematically: (1) the exposure time of DEZ as inorganic precursor and (2) the substrate temperature were adjusted, respectively. As a result, we verified that the surface reaction between organic semiconductor (TPP) and metal atom (Zn) was ALD process. In addition, we calculated activation energy by using Arrhenius equation for the substrate temperature versus area change rate of pyrrolic nitrogen. The surface and interface reactions between TPP with Zn were investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. These results show a facile and well-controllable fabrication technique for the metal-organic thin film for future electronic applications.

  • In recent years, discoloration defects, called as snail trail, have been observed at many crystalline photovoltaic modules after a period of time ranging from several months to several years after initial installation. It has been reported that this phenomenon doesn't impact on the performance of photovoltaic modules, but it can be detected through simple visual inspection. The origin and detailed mechanism for the formation have not been identified. In this study, non-destructive analysis by Raman spectroscopy has been carried out to investigate the origin of this phenomenon. In parallel, destructive analysis by scanning electron microscopt and transmission electron microscopy was also performed in order to confirm the results from non-destructive method. Through the extensive analysis, it was found that the main cause for discoloration is the formations of $Ag_2CO_3$ and $AgC_2H_3O_2$. Detailed mechanism for the formation of these particles was indentified through systematic studies.

  • Graphene, two dimensional single layer of carbon atoms, has tremendous attention due to its superior property such as fast electron mobility, high thermal conductivity and optical transparency, and also found many applications such as field-effect transistors (FET), energy storage and conversion, optoelectronic device, electromechanical resonators and chemical sensors. Several techniques have been developed to form the graphene. Especially chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is a promising process for the large area graphene. For the electrically isolated devices, the graphene should be transfer to insulated substrate from Cu or Ni. However, transferred graphene has serious drawback due to remaining polymeric residue during transfer process which induces the poor device characteristics by impurity scattering and it interrupts the surface functionalization for the sensor application. In this study, we demonstrate the characteristics of solution-gated FET depending on the removal of polymeric residues. The solution-gated FET is operated by the modulation of the channel conductance by applying a gate potential from a reference electrode via the electrolyte, and it can be used as a chemical sensor. The removal process was achieved by several solvents during the transfer of CVD graphene from a copper foil to a substrate and additional annealing process with H2/Ar environments was carried out. We compare the properties of graphene by Raman spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy(AFM), and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) measurements. Effects of residual polymeric materials on the device performance of graphene FET will be discussed in detail.

  • Graphene has been the subject of intense study in recent years owing to its good optoelectronic properties, possibility for stretchable electronics, and so on. Especially, many research groups have studied about graphene nanostructures with various sizes and shapes. Graphene needs to be fabricated into useful devices with controllable electrical properties for its successful device applications. However, this been far from satisfaction owing to a lack of reliable pattern transfer techniques. Photolithography, nanowire etching, and electron beam lithography methods are commonly used for construction of graphene patterns, but those techniques have limitations for getting controllable GNRs. We have developed a novel nanoscale pattern transfer technique based on an electro-hydrodynamic lithography providing highly scalable versatile pattern transfer technique viable for industrial applications. This technique was exploited to fabricate nanoscale patterned graphene structures in a predetermined shape on a substrate. FE-SEM, AFM, and Raman microscopy were used to characterize the patterned graphene structures. This technique may present a very reliable high resolution pattern transfer technique suitable for graphene device applications and can be extended to other inorganic materials.

  • Zirconia powders with nano size pores and high specific surface areas were synthesized via aqueous precipitation and hydrothermal synthetic method using $ZrOCl_28H_2O$ and $NH_4OH$ under pH=11 and ambient condition. By this reaction. zirconia hydrate $(ZrO_x(OH)_{4-2x})$ was primarily synthesized and the obtained zirconia hydrate was heat treated hydrothermally using an autoclave at various temperatures under pH=11. X-ray diffraction, Scanning electron microscopy, Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, FT-IR, Raman, Particle size analysis, DTA-TG, and BET techniques were used for the characterization of the powder. The synthesized zirconia showed an amorphous phase, however, the phase was transformed to the crystalline state during the hydrothermal process. The observed crystalline phase above $160^{\circ}C$ was a mixed phase of monoclinic and tetragonal zirconia. By the BET analysis, it was found that the specific surface area was ranged in $126{\sim}276m^2/g$ and the zirconia had the cylindrical shaped pores with average diameter of $2{\sim}7nm$.

  • This paper describes the physical characterizations of polycrystalline 3C-SiC thin films heteroepitaxially grown on Si wafers with thermal oxide, In this work, the 3C-SiC film was deposited by LPCVD (low pressure chemical vapor deposition) method using single precursor 1, 3-disilabutane $(DSB:\;H_3Si-CH_2-SiH_2-CH_3)\;at\;850^{\circ}C$. The crystallinity of the 3C-SiC thin film was analyzed by XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy), XRD (X-ray diffraction) and FT-IR (fourier transform-infrared spectometers), respectively. The surface morphology was also observed by AFM (atomic force microscopy) and voids or dislocations between SiC and $SiO_2$ were measured by SEM (scanning electron microscope). Finally, residual strain was investigated by Raman scattering and a peak of the energy level was less than other type SiC films, From these results, the grown poly 3C-SiC thin film is very good crystalline quality, surface like mirror, and low defect and strain. Therefore, the polycrystalline 3C-SiC is suitable for harsh environment MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical-Systems) applications.

  • The characteristics of all polymer composites containing carbon materials are determined by four factors: component properties, composition, structure and interfacial interactions. The most important filler characteristics are particle size, size distribution, specific surface area and particle shape. As a consequence, in this paper we discuss the aspects of the mechanical, electrical and thermal properties of composites with different fillers of carbon black, carbon nanotube (CNT), graphene and graphite and focus on the relationship between factors and properties, as mentioned above. Accordingly, we fabricate rubber composites that contain various carbon materials in carbon black-based and silica based-SBR matrixes with dual phase fillers and use scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, a rhometer, an Instron tensile machine, and a thermal conductivity analyzer to evaluate composites' mechanical, fatigue, thermal, and electronic properties. In mechanical properties, hardness and 300%-modulus of graphene-composite are sharply increased in all cases due to the larger specific surface. Also, it has been found that the thermal conductivity of the CNT-composite is higher than that of any of the other composites and that the composite with graphene has the best electrical properties.
