Machinability in metal cutting processes depends on cutting input conditions such as cutting velocity, feed rate, depth of cut, types of work material and tool shape factors. In this study, to assess chip breaking characteristics of a turning process, an equivalent oblique cutting system to this has been established. And the equivalent effective rake angle was determined using side rake angle, back rake angle and side cutting edge angle of the tool. A non-dimensional parameter, Chip breaking index(CB), was used to assess Chip breaking characteristics of chip in conjunction with the equivalent effective rake angle. In case of positive rake angles of the equivalent effective rake, the back rake angle has little effect on the chip breaking characteristics however, in case of negative ones, the side rake angle has some effect on Chip breaking characteristics.

The optimum cutting condition for rake angle in turning was investigated in (6-4) Brass and Al alloy. Results of experiments in (6-4) Brass and Al alloy are as follow. Specific cutting resistance becames higher as the depth of cutting, feed or cutting velocity decreases at same rake angle and resistance appear low value 20.deg., 25.deg.(6-4)brass, 0.deg. 20.deg.(Al alloy). The optimum cutting condition for(6-4) Brass is depth of cutting 0.5mm, rake angle 25.deg., cutting velocity 80m/min, feed 0.1mm/rev and for Al alloy is depth of cutting 0.1mm, rake angle 0.deg., cutting velocity 200m/min, feed 0.5mm/rev. The rake angle for good roughness is 20.deg. at (6-4) Brass, and that for Al alloy is 15.deg. The roughness is influenced by feed and it has the lowest value at 0.1mm/rev and the cutting condition is influenced by rake angle only.

Back rake angle of tool is one of the fundamental effects to the cutting ability. In this paper, for several back rake angle of lathe tool (-5$^{\circ}$ , 0$^{\circ}$ , 5$^{\circ}$ , 10$^{\circ}$ , 15$^{\circ}$ ), we experimentally examine cutting forces via orthogonal cutting. Using measured cutting forces, a formula for specific cutting resistance is derived according to the variation of tool angle. Also, the measured cutting forces are analyzed in both time and frequency domain. Cutting parameters are obtained by measuring the thickness of chip, and the effect of the back rake angle of tool is manifested. This study maintains the predicted cutting model with improved accuracy.

In the last few years, lasers have found new applications as tools for ceramic machining which is laser-assisted machining(LAM). LAM process for the machining of difficult-to-machine materials such as structural ceramics, has recently been studied on silicon nitride workpiece for a wide range of operating condition. However, there have been few studies on rake angle in LAM process. In this paper we analyzed difference of machinability between positive and negative rake angle in tools. We have obtained interesting results that we could eliminate chattering, lower specific cutting and cutting ratio in case of positive rake angle. The results suggest that positive rake angled tools can make more plastic deformation and stable cutting of silicon nitride in comparison with negative rake angled one.
Cutting of rocks is very common encountered in tunneling and mining during underground excavations. A deep understanding of rock-tool interaction can promote industrial applications significantly. In this paper, a distinct element method based approach, PFC3D, is adopted to simulate the rock cutting under different operation conditions (cutting velocity, depth of cut and rake angle) and with various tool geometries (tip angle, tip wear and tip shape). Simulation results showed that the cutting force and accumulated number of cracks increase with increasing cutting velocity, cut depth, tip angle and pick abrasion. The number of cracks and cutting force decrease with increasing negative rake angle and increase with increasing positive rake angle. The numerical approach can offer a better insight into the rock-tool interaction during the rock cutting process. The proposed numerical method can be used to assess the rock cuttability, to estimate the cutting performance, and to design the cutter head.

In this study, the effect of the helix angle and rake angle of a flat end-mill in the milling of titanium alloy was investigated. Tool shape parameters such as helix angle and rake angle affect the cutting force, cutting zone temperature, vibration, and chip flow mechanism, which in turn determine tool life, surface integrity, and dimensional accuracy of the milling process. To investigate the effect of the helix and rake angles, a certain range of parameters was selected, and three-dimensional tool models were generated for finite element analysis (FEA) for each case. The cutting force and pressure on the tool flank face and rake face were investigated by FEA. Further, several tool models were proposed for machining tests. The cutting force characteristics were investigated by the machining tests.

The optimum cutting condition of rake angle in turning was investigated in SM45C and SM20C. Results of experiments in SM45C and SM20C are as follow. Specific cutting resistance became higher as the depth of cutting, feed or cutting velocity decreases at same rake angle and resistance became low value at 20.deg.(SM45C), 10.deg.(SM20C). The optimum cutting condition for SM45C is depth of cutting 0.7mm, rake angle 30.deg., cutting velocity 200mm/min, feed 0.1mm/rev, and for SM20C is depth of cut 0.5mm, rake angle 10.deg., cutting velocity 150mm/min, feed 0.1mm/rev.The rake angle for good roughness is 15.deg for SM45C, and that for SM20C is 25.deg. The roughness is influenced by feed and it has the lowest value at 0.1mm/rev and the cutting condition is closely related with the change of cutting velocity and feed.

In this study, tap wear was analyzed not only to predict the tap life time but also to propose an improved tap design. Because rake angle and thread relief of tap are the significant factors in geometry of tap, these two factors were picked as the experiment variables. The experiment was conducted with six types of tap which have 6$^{\circ}$ , 8$^{\circ}$ and 12$^{\circ}$ of rake angles with 0,08mm and 0.14 mm of thread relief. From the measured cutting force, it could be known that cutting torque was low at the large the rake thread relief and tool life was long as rake angle became large. Eventually, tool life is longest when rake angle is 12$^{\circ}$ and the with 0.08mm thread relief. Aand the width of crater wear and that of flank wear were measured when a tapping torque was 20 [$kg_f$-mm] . Most of the measured values were above the width of tool wear[$V_B$=O.O3m], which means that tool life is over.

The objective of this study is to get the basic data for the development of fluidized bed combustor. For this purpose, various rake angles(.theta.=20.deg., 25.deg., 30.deg., 35.deg.) of finned tubes and a smooth tube were installed horizontally in the fluidized bed combustor of 410*250mm. The effect of fluidized bed temperature, superficial velocity in bed, size of bed materials, rake angle of finned tubes on the heat transfer coefficient was experimentally investigated. The following results were obtained. (1) Under the fluidized bed temperature(750.deg. C-900.deg. C), and the gas velocity in bed(1.1-2.8m/sec), The highest heat transfer coefficient was measured with the rake angle of finned tubes was .theta.=25.deg. and .theta.=35.deg. for the average fluidized material particle size of 1.22mm and 1.54mm, respectively. Generally, the heat transfer coefficient of finned tubes is 1.4 to 2.4 times larger than that of smooth tubes. (2) The size of bed materials influences the rake angle of finned tubes which can have the highest heat transfer coefficient. As the temperature in bed gets higher, the effect of the rake angle of finned tubes on the heat transfer coefficient becomes greater.

In machining operations, a burr is an undesirable material formed by plastic deformation in a workpiece. With the ongoing industrial developments, it has become an important issue to efficiently remove burrs. Several deburring methods have been developed to remove specific burrs that require special machining. However, to remove burrs formed while machining at the CNC machining center, deburring tools must be developed. In a previous study, a new deburring tool was developed by the authors. In this study, the influence of the rake angle and stiffness of the new deburring tool was analyzed to improve performance. The theoretical model was driven considering the rake angle and stiffness, and experiments were carried out to validate the model. Especially, conditions based on the designed rake angle and stiffness to effectively remove burrs, which is difficult, at the exit surface were suggested.
