Rainwater Harvesting Potential in a New Residential Area in North Bujumbura, Burundi

  • Access to clean and affordable water is one of the fundamental human rights because water is essential to life and a foundation for socioeconomic development of any country in the world. Despite the efforts to secure water supply in Burundi, the amount of water supplied by public utilities does not meet the demand of the population because population keeps increasing with fluctuation of weather conditions. This study selected north Bujumbura that is a sprawling new residential area in the western part of Burundi as a case to investigate the potential of rainwater harvesting in meeting water demand of the country. Based on a long-term average monthly precipitation in the region, the rainwater harvesting potential was assessed as a function of roof sizes, number of households, and runoff coefficients of roof materials. For the entire region of north Bujumbura, the current water supply capacity of the local water company combined with the rainwater harvesting potential resulted in the water surplus of $468,604.1m^3/yr$. Although three communes among them still showed water deficit in dry season, they still got help from rainwater to relieve their water shortage. This suggests that at the regional scale, proper storages and water quality control for harvestable rainwater could contribute to relieving the regional water shortage and allow the population growth.

  • Purpose: Town of Woldia, a semi-arid region in the Northern Wollo region of Ethiopia, faces water supply shortage in general, though the town possesses a running stream of clean water throughout the year. This study is aimed at analyzing the possibility of using rainwater for water scarcity and non-potable water needs of the Woldia University. A careful study and analysis have been made to assess the feasibility of using rainwater in place of the tap water supply. Research design and methodology: This study was done inside the main campus of Woldia University located in Woldia town. The runoff water from the roof of buildings was studied, by the time of rainfall in the town. Also, the budget needed for implementing a rainwater harvesting system was calculated. Results: The findings of the study clearly indicates that the requirements of the water to use for flushing, cleaning, and washing toilets in the administrative buildings and classrooms can be satisfied by using rainwater as an alternative to tap water. Conclusion: Based on the results the study finds it is benefitable for the Woldia University to install the rainwater harvesting system at the earliest to solve the water problems prevailing in the current situation.

The Study for the Long-Term Rainwater Storage Quality Effect after Chlorination (염소 소독에 의한 저장빗물수질 유지효과 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to monitor the rainwater flowing from the roof of buildings and to maximize the effectiveness of the rainwater storage. This study also analyses the changes in rainwater characteristics before and after subsequent chlorination disinfection. The stored rainwater was disinfected by chlorine and then analyzed for COD, TN, TP, enteric bacteria, and general microbial population changes over time. There was an observed 99% reduction of enteric bacteria and common microbes within two weeks after chlorine injection. Thus, chlorine disinfection of rainwater improves water quality for long-term storage and future use.

  • The recent emphasis on ecological urban development has led to the need to maintain a hydrologic cycle in urban areas. As such, this study proposes decentralized rainwater management, a concept of onsite rainwater management that involves the utilization, infiltration, detention, and retention of rainwater. The main objective of this research is to estimate the proportion of decentralized rainwater management that is needed. From the research that was conducted in this study, it was found that the total runoff quantity increases by 10-20% after district lands are developed, when the probable rate of precipitation every 10 years is within this range. Thus, the runoff rate can be reduced by 10~20% of the total runoff quantity through decentralization. On the other hand, in the scale of housing complex development, the total runoff quantity increases by as much as 10~40% due to the changes in the rate of the impervious surface area. If 10-40% of the total runoff quantity was processed through decentralized rainwater management, the rate of infiltration, detention, retention, and runoff in precipitation prior to development could be recovered.

  • In this paper we have designed a monitoring and controlling system, which rainwater harvests. Atmega 128 microprocessor family is used for the monitoring and controlling of the system. Through the Internet, the rainwater bank system can be monitored and controlled by using JAVA program. Monitoring and controlling of the system are also possible without Internet connection.

Chemical Composition of Rainwater in Suwon and Ansung Area (수원과 안성지역 빗물의 화학성분 조성)

  • To investigate the chemical properties of rainwater in the southern part of gyeonggi Province, the rainwater was collected in Suwon and Ansung for six months from May to October in 1998, and analyzed its chemical composition. The ion balance and electric conductivity balance showed confidence to chemical analyses of rainwater. The most frequent pH range of rainwater was pH $5.0{\sim}5.6$ both in Suwon and Ansung area with distribution ratio of 37.9% and 35.3%, respectively. Among the 1mm fraction for initial 5mm of rainfall, ion concentration of initial rainwater (less than 1mm of rainfall) was higher than those of the later terms. The major ions in rainwater were $NH_4^-,\;Ca^{2+}$and $Na^+$ for cations, and $SO_4^{2-}$ and $NO_3^-$ for anions. Monthly variation of pH of rainwater showed low level of 4.2 to 4.5 in Suwon and 4.6 to 4.7 in Ansung in August and September, respectively. The $nss-SO_4^{2-}/NO_3^-$ ratio of rainwater in Suwon and Ansung area were 2.2 and 2.9 which means nonsea salt $SO_4^{2-}$ contrbuted to acidity of rainwater more in Ansung than Suwon area.

The Study on Characteristics of Rainwater in Saemangeum (재난을 대비한 새만금지역의 강우특성에 관한 연구)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the cause of acidification of rainwater and to evaluate the possibility of alternative water resource in Saemangeum. The rainwater were collected in the kwangwhal-myun, Saemangeum from March to September, 2009. The collected 7 samples were analyzed with pH meter, IC (ion chromatography) and ICP (inductively coupled plasma) about the pH and the major ions ($SO{_4}^{2-}$, $NO_3{^-}$, $Cl^-$, $Ca^{2+}$, $K^+$, $NH^{4+}$, $Na^+$ and $Mg^{2+}$) of rainwater. The order of the major anion concentration and the acidification contribution in the rainwater was $SO{_4}^{2-}$>$NO_3{^-}$>$Cl^-$, and that of the major cation was $Ca^{2+}$>$K^+$>$NH_4{^+}$>$Na^+$>$Mg^{2+}$. In the initial rainwater, the major ions concentration were higher than the middle period. pH of the rainwater was the lowest at May, but similar to the results of the others. And pH of the rainwater were significant correlation with $SO{_4}^{2-}$ and $Cl^-$ in Saemangeum. From this results, the rainwater was slight acidic, and $SO{_4}^{2-}$ was the main factor contributed to the rainwater acidification in Saemangeum.

  • The purpose of this study is to improve inefficient use of rainwater in island area where it uses rainwater to supply the domestic water and to propose rainwater utilizing system that is most appropriate to the characteristics of precipitation in Korea. To accomplish these purposes, Cheju island was chosen as a study area and the design for the roof area and tank size of rainwater utilizing system was based on the result of the relationship between the actual precipitation and domestic water data which was used in the analysis by run theory to use run theory. Since the result of the analysis indicated that the designed rainwater catchment system was operated stably in Cheju island, the same result is expected in other island too. Therefore, if this system is executed together with the roof rehabilitation work of island area, it will bring positive effects on broth the improvement of residental environment and the security of domestic water.

  • The purpose of this research is to analyze the water quantity of the rainwater detention system based on the Planning Simulation in Residential Areas. The contents of this research consists of two main parts. The first part is to calculate the supply water quantity of the rainwater detention system and the demand water quantity of the Wonheungs' ecological park. The second part is to analyze the difference between demand and supply of water quantity, based on the Planning Simulation, in the rainwater detention system. This research will contribute to the establishment of the environment-friendly site planning methods which increase the quality of residential environment in apartment housing.

Removal Characteristics of Rainwater Including Non-point Pollutants Using Pre-filter of Wasted-tire and Non-woven Fabric (폐타이어와 부직포를 이용한 프리필터에 의한 비점오염원 포함 우수 처리 특성)

  • Pre-filter system that was consisted of wasted-tire, non-woven fabrics, and sponge was developed as a primary treatment process prior to rainwater reservation or a pre-treatment process of rainwater reuse system for reclamation. By using this system, SS concentration, TOC, COD, and turbidity could decreased by 86.7%, 62.6%, 69.1% and 66.5%, respectively. From the results of particle size distribution of treated water, the particles over than $30{\mu}m$ of diameter were completely removed by pre-filter system. But 90% of particles less than $20{\mu}m$ of diameter were passed through pre-filter. Optimal depth of wasted-tire and non-woven fabrics were 15cm and 2.4cm, respectively. Pre-filter system was considered as an effective alternative for pre-treatment of rainwater including non-point pollutants and it could be also applied for the treatment of combined sewer overflow (CSO).
