  • The flow is changed by the structure which goes across the river. The structure with debris causes high water level and overflow. The changed flow, which caused by pier and stream characteristics like velocity and slope, was analysed by 2D model. After rainfall, the influences of increased discharge were evaluated. Velocity was simulated in the channel by SMS (Surface water Modeling System) using RMA2, and high velocity values were found in the steep and narrow reach. Highest velocity value around piers was showed in the middle of space between two piers. The increased discharge due to rainfall increases velocity and changes flow contour considerably.

  • In this research, a distributed rainfall-runoff model based on physical kinematic wave was developed to simulate temporal and spatial distribution of flood discharge considering grid rainfall and grid based hydrological information. The developed model can simulate temporal change and spatial distribution of surface flow and sub-surface flow during flood period, and input parameters of ASCII format as pre-process can be extracted using GIS such as ArcGIS and ArcView. Output results of ASCII format as post-process can be created to express distribution of discharge in the watershed using GIS. The Namgang Dam Watershed was divided into square grids of 500m resolution and calculated by kinematic wave into an outlet through channel networks to review capability of the developed model. The model displayed precise results to be compared to the hydrograph.

  • In this study, the hydrological properties of permeable pavement were analyzed by the experiment and the numerical simulation. The numerical model used was a modified SWMM especially for considering the hydrological response of permeable pavement. The parameters of modified SWMM were revised by the experimental results, and then the practicability was evaluated through the comparison of the experimental and numerical simulation results. In the experiments, three different rainfall intensities such as 65 mm/hr, 90 mm/hr, 95 mm/hr were supplied for 4 hrs, and the hydraulic properties including surface outflow, subsurface outflow, ground water level, soil water contents were measured for 10 hrs. The results showed rainfall intensity effected directly on surface outflow volume and subsurface outflow volume was more effected by ground water level than rainfall intensity. The ground water level and the soil water contents were under estimated as compared with the experimental data except the portion of occurring direct runoff. The surface and subsurface outflow discharge were simulated very well in comparison with the experimental data. Consequently, the modified SWMM could be used very effectively to evaluate the hydrological property of permeable pavement.

  • Net outflow flux and unit load of pollutants were investigated at a paddy fields area(Soro-ri) with large-scaled plots on loam soil during irrigation seasons of $2001\~2003$. Water samples were collected, and inflow and outflow were .measured at $5\~10$ day intervals during non-storm periods and at $2\~6$ hours intervals during storm events. The average concentration of TP in percolated water was much smaller than that in irrigation and surface outflow water likely due to phosphorus absorption capacity of paddy soils. Net outflow flux in study area was significantly correlated with rainfall and surface outflow discharge. Nutrient flux from Paddy fields can be abated by reduction in outflow surface discharge.

  • Long term monitoring was conducted to investigate a surface runoff of pollution from urban highway. The monitoring data was collected for 18 rainfall events and was used to correlate pollution load to various parameters, such as rainfall intensity, antecedent dry days and total discharge flow. Runoff coefficient and seasonal variation were also evaluated. The mean runoff coefficient of the highway was 0.823(range; $0.4687{\sim}0.9884$), and wash-off ratio for $COD_{Mn}$ and SS loads was 72.6% and 64.3%, respectively. For the initial rainfall event, the runoff EMC of $COD_{Mn}$ was high in summer and the EMC of SS was high in autumn season. However the seasonal variation of T-N and T-P was not significant. The discharged $COD_{Mn}$-EMC was $147.6\;mg/L{\sim}9.0\;mg/L$ on the generated $COD_{Mn}$-EMC of $98.8\;mg/L{\sim}8.9\;mg/L$. While the generated EMC of SS was in $285.7\;mg/L{\sim}20.0\;mg/L$ and its discharged EMC was in $190.4\;mg/L{\sim}8.0\;mg/L$. EMC of pollutants was not directly related to the first flush rainfall intensity and the antecedent dry days. But the correlation was relatively high between EMC and cumulative runoff flow volume. The trend of EMC was reduced with the cumulative runoff flow volume.

  • Field experiment was performed to investigate water and nutrient mass balances in paddy field with groundwater irrigation from May to October, 2001. The total water inflow was about 1,183mm in which rainfall, overflow from upstream paddy, and groundwater irrigation accounted for 43, 30, and 27%, respectively. Notice that the precipitation of the study period was less than the average annual precipitation. The total drainage was almost balanced with the inflow and more than half of it was occurred by surface drainage. From the nutrient mass balance analysis, the T-P output (17.56kg/ha) was estimated slightly lower than the input (20.90kg/ha) and the T-N output (130.41kg/ha) was slightly greater than the input(129.24kg/ha). However, the difference was within the expectation and the nutrient mass was thought to be balanced considering uncertainties in field experiment and other activities not included in the study such as algae and soil microorganisms. The surface discharge of nutrient, which was about 10% of total nutrient output, was mainly affected by fertilization and rainfall runoff. Therefore, prudent surface drainage plan might be necessary particularly for the fertilization period to prevent degradation of receiving water quality. The study was performed under abnormally low rainfall compared to the average annual rainfall record, and further monitoring in diverse rainfalls and irrigation methods is recommended to estimate nutrient behavior in the paddy field more reasonably.

  • Different from the main land of South Korea, Jeju Island has been in difficulties for measuring discharge. Due to high infiltration rate, most of streams in Jeju Island are usually in the dried state except six streams with the steady base flow, and the unique geological characteristics such as steep slope and short traveling distance of runoff have forced rainfall runoff usually to occur during very short period of time like one or two days. While discharge observations in Jeju Island have been conducted only for 16 sites with fixed electromagnetic surface velocimetry, effective analysis and validation of observed discharge data and operation of the monitoring sites still have been limited due to very few professions to maintain such jobs. This research is sponsored by Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs to build water cycle monitoring and management system of Jeju Island. Specifically, the research focuses on optimizing discharge measurement techniques adjusted for Jeju Island, expanding the monitoring sites, and validating the existing discharge data. First of all, we attempted to conduct discharge measurements in streams with steady base flow, by utilizing various recent discharge monitoring techniques, such as ADCP, LSPIV, Magnetic Velocimetry, and Electromagnetic Wave Surface Velocimetry. ADCP has been known to be the most accurate in terms of discharge measurement compared with other techniques, thus that the discharge measurement taken by ADCP could be used as a benchmark data for validation of others. However, there are still concerns of using ADCP in flood seasons; thereby LSPIV would be able to be applied for replacing ADCP in such flooded situation in the stream. In addition, sort of practical approaches such as Magnetic Velocimetry, and Electromagnetic Wave Surface Velocimetry would also be validated, which usually measure velocity in the designated parts of stream and assume the measured velocity to be representative for whole cross-section or profile at any specified location. The result of the comparison and analysis will be used for correcting existing discharge measurement by Electromagnetic Wave Surface Velocimetry and finding the most optimized discharge techniques in the future.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore the effectiveness of dual-polarization radar rainfall by comapring with the flood inundation record map through KIMSTORM(Grid-based KIneMatic wave STOrm Runoff Model). For Namgang dam ($2,293km^2$) watershed, the Bisl dual-polarization radar data for 3 typhoons (Khanun, Bolaven, Sanba) and 1 heavy rain event in 2012 were prepared. For both 28 ground rainfall data and radar rainfall data, the model was calibrated using observed discharge data at 5 stations with $R^2$, Nash and Sutcliffe Model Efficiency (ME) and Volume Conservation Index (VCI). The calibration results of $R^2$, ME and VCI were 0.85, 0.78 and 1.09 for ground rainfall and 0.85, 0.79, and 1.04 for radar rainfall respectively. The flood inundation record areas (SY and MD/SG district) by typhoon Sanba were compared with the distributed modeling results. The spatial distribution by radar rainfall produced more surface runoff from the watershed and simulated higher stream discharge than the ground rainfall condition in both SY and MD/SG district. In case of MD/SG district, the stream water level by radar rainfall near the flood inundation area showed 0.72 m higher than the water level by ground rainfall.

  • The temporal and spatial relationship of the weather elements such as rainfall and temperature is closely linked to the streamflow simulation, especially, to the flood forecasting problems. For the study area, Imjin river basin, which has the specific characteristics in geography with river cross operation between North and South Korea, the meteorological information in the northern area is totally deficiency, lead to the inaccuracy of streamflow estimation. In the paper, this problem is solved by using the combination of global (such as soil moisture content, land use) and local hydrologic components data such as weather data (precipitation, evapotranspiration, humidity, etc.) for the model-driven runoff (surface flow, lateral flow and groundwater flow) data in each subbasin. To compute the streamflow in Imjin river basin, this study is applied the hydrologic model SURR (Sejong Univ. Rainfall-Runoff) which is the continuous rainfall-runoff model used physical foundations, originally based on Storage Function Model (SFM) to simulate the intercourse of the soil properties, weather factors and flow value. The result indicates the spatial variation in the runoff response of the different subbasins influenced by the input data. The dependancy of runoff simulation accuracy depending on the qualities of input data and model parameters is suggested in this study. The southern region with the dense of gauges and the adequate data shows the good results of the simulated discharge. Eventually, the application of SURR model in Imjin riverbasin gives the accurate consequence in simulation, and become the subsequent runoff for prediction in the future process.

  • The nutrients runoff including nitrogen and phosphorous was investigated to find out the characteristics of nutrient discharge from the slurrigated area using digested animal manure. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1.The concentrations of T-N, $NH_4$- N, EC, T- P and Cl- were high in flood runoff. 2.The concentration of nutrients by the surface runoff, except for $NO_3$-N, showed a tendency of increasing when the period of dry days before the rain fall was long. And the concentration of N$NO_3$-N increased in the inflow section where subsurface drainage flowed in. 3.The quality of water was generally influenced by the discharge of water quantity from slurrigated area. However the runoff concentration influenced the water quality when it was high enough. 4.To reduce loss of the nutrients and improve the fertilization effect, it is not recommended to apply slurry in rainy season.
