Infiltration of rainfall causes railway embankment to be unstable and may result in failure. Basic relationship between the rainfall and stability of railway embankment are defined to analyze the stability of embankment by rainfall. An experimental study for defining of infiltration rate of rainfall into slope is conducted in the lab. The results of Rainfall infiltration show that rainfall infiltration is not equal to infiltration as like reservoir because rate of rainfall infiltration is controlled by slope angle. Based on these results, boundary condition of rainfall is altered and various numerical analysis are performed. The variation of shear strength, the degree of saturation and pore-water pressure for railway slope during rainfall can be predicted and the safety factor of railway slope can be expressed as the function of rainfall amount, namely rainfall index. Therefore, it is judged that this rainfall index can be a good tool for the rail-transport operation control.

The RUSLE(Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation) has been most widely used to estimate sediment yield in Korea. However RUSLE factors have not been verified based on measured data of sediment yield. The analysis of characteristics for the rainfall erosivity factor R was performed in this study. The R factor of RUSLE is expressed as multiple of total rainfall energy and maximum 30 min rainfall intensity. In this study, the characteristics of 10 rainfall energy equations were investigated using data measured in Gangneung experimental watershed, and applicability of each equations was reviewed based on results of the correlation analysis between measured sediment yield and total rainfall, between measured sediment yield and maximum intensity, and between measured sediment yield and total rainfall energy yield. Also, the relationship of I30 and I60 was proposed using 10-min rainfall data during 9 years.

This study aims to establish the correlations between variables related to a slope during rainfall and factor of safety (FOS) and displacement using a coupling analysis method that is designed to consider both in rainfall conditions. With the recent development of measurement technologies, the approach of using the measurement data in the field has become easier. Particularly, they have been obtained in tests to determine the real-time safety and movement of a slope; however, a specific method has not been finalized. In addition, collected measurement data for recognizing the FOS and displacement in real-time with a specific relevance is difficult, and risks of uncertainty, such as in soil parameters and time, exist. In this study, the correlations between various slope-related variables (i.e., rainfall intensity, rainfall duration, angle of the slope, and mechanical properties including strength parameters of selected three types of soil; loamy sand, silt loam, sand) and the FOS and displacement are analyzed in order of seepage analysis, slope stability analysis and slope displacement analysis. Moreover, the methodology of coupling analysis is verified and a fundamental understanding of the factors that need to be considered in real-time observations is gained. The results show that the contributions of the abovementioned variables vary according to the soil type. Thus, the tendency of the displacement also differs by the soil type and variables but not same tendency with FOS. The friction angle and cohesion are negative while the rainfall duration and rainfall intensity are positive with the displacement. This suggests that understanding their correlations is necessary to determine the safety of a slope in real-time using displacement data. Additionally, databases considering rainfall conditions and a wide range of soil characteristics, including hydraulic and mechanical parameters, should be accumulated.

The Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) is a revision of the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE). However, changes for each factor of the USLE have been made in RUSLE which can be used to compute soil loss on areas only where significant overland flow occurs. RUSLE which requires standardized methods to satisfy new data requirements estimates soil movement at a particular site by utilizing the same factorial approach employed by the USLE. The rainfall erosivity in the RUSLE expressed through the R-factor to quantify the effect of raindrop impact and to reflect the amount and rate of runoff likely is associated with the rain. Calculating the R-factor value in the RUSLE equation to predict the related soil loss may be possible to analyse the variability of rainfall erosivity with long time-series of concerned rainfall data. However, daily time step models cannot return proper estimates when run on other specific rainfall patters such as storm and daily cumulative precipitation. Therefore, it is desirable that cross-checking is carried out amongst different time-aggregations typical rainfall event may cause error in estimating the potential soil loss in definite conditions.

Soil erosion processes are affected by weather factors, such as rainfall, temperature, wind, and humidity. Among these factors, rainfall directly influences soil erosion by breaking away soil particles. The kinetic energy of rainfall and water flow caused by rain entrains and transports soil particles downstream. Therefore, in order to estimate soil erosion, it is important to accurately determine the rainfall erosivity factor(R) in RUSLE(Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation). The objective of this study is to evaluate the average annual R using 14 years(2002~2015) of 1 minute rainfall data from 55 KMA(Korea Meteorological Administration) weather stations. The R results from 1 min rainfall were compared with previous R studies using 1 h rainfall data. The determination coefficients($R^2$) between R calculated using 1 min rainfall data and annual rainfall were 0.70-0.98. The estimation of 30 min rainfall intensity from 1 min rainfall data showed better $R^2$ results than results from 1 h rainfall data. For estimation of physical spatial rain erosivity(R), distribution of annual rainfall was estimated by IDW(Inverse Distance Weights) interpolation, taking elevation into consideration. Because of the computation burden, the R calculation process was programmed using the python GUI(Graphical User Interface) tool.
One-dimensional rainfall laboratory tests using gneissic weathered soil were conducted to investigate effect of antecedent rainfall on infiltration characteristics. Experimental results using samples from Chuncheon and Chungju sites showed that rainfall onto the ground surface decreased initial negative pore water pressure of unsaturated soils, which recovered gradually after the end of rainfall. Rainfall intensity increases water infiltration rate, and infiltration rate during main rainfall is faster than that of the preceding rainfall. It is considered that higher water saturation after antecedent rainfall increases water infiltration rate during main rainfall. In particular, Chungju sample with higher clay content had slower recovery of negative pore water pressure and infiltration rate. Numerical results using finite element slope stability analysis showed that reduction of initial negative pore pressure due to rainfall infiltration deteriorates slope stability, and diffusion of pore water pressure after the end of rainfall further reduces FS of the slope in the short term. Main rainfall after prior rainfall further reduced factor of safety of the unsaturated slope. Pattern of antecedent rainfall has a significant impact on the magnitude and distribution of initial pore water pressure in unsaturated soils which are controlling factor to assess factor of safety of unsaturated slope during rainfall.
This study was conducted to characterize the relationship of rainfall intensity and slope stability by using numerical analysis. The maximum precipitation rate for 10 minutes, 1 hour and 1 day was determined as 28 mm, 70 mm and 271 mm, respectively, by investigating 36 years of KMA data. Then slope infiltration analysis was performed to obtain the ground water level in the slope by using computer programming SEEP/W, and slope stability analysis was done for each time step by using program SLOPE/W. The factor of safety was minimized when the slope was saturated under each rainfall intensity; the time required for saturation was 2 hours with 10 minutes rainfall intensity of 28 mm, 7 hours with 1 hour rainfall intensity of 70 mm and 3 days with 1 day rainfall intensity of 271 mm. When accumulated rainfall was 196 mm for the 10minutes rainfall intensity of 28 mm with duration of 2 hours, the factor of safety was decreased to 1.0, while accumulated rainfall of 468 mm and 820 mm for the 1 hour and 1 day rainfall intensity, respectively, was required to reach the factor of safety, 1.0. Since the normalized rainfall intensity was 13 mm and 1.9 mm for 1 hour and 1 day maximum rainfall, respectively, those results showed that the rainfall intensity could have a more effect on the slope stability than the accumulated rainfall.

This study was conducted to redetermine the rainfall erosion factor (R factor) in USLE for the estimation of soil loss at Korea. The redetermined R factor may be applied more precisely to interpret the changes of regional/yearly/seasonal patterns, including the amount of rainfall and the kinetic energy of rainfall, in Korea. This study calculated the R factors based on 60-minute precipitation data from 60 sites covering the whole country for 30 years from 1981 to 2010. As a result, the annual mean rainfall was $4,147MJ\;mm\;ha^{-1}\;yr^{-1}\;hr^{-1}$ in Korea. Coastal regions of Jeonnam and Gyeongnam, northwest regions of Gyeonggi, and Seoul had the greater values of R factor compared to other regions. The annual mean R factors for every decade were 3,988, 4,085, and $4,370MJ\;mm\;ha^{-1}\;yr^{-1}\;hr^{-1}$ in 1981~1990, 1991~2000, and 2001~2010, respectively. Generally, the R factors had an increasing tendency over and over pest decades. The ratios of summer R factor to total annual mean R factor were 69.8% (1981~1990), 73.7% (1991~2000), and 74.2% (2001~2010). We found that the absolute values and the relative ratios of summer rainfall are gradually increased.
In this study, the variation of wetting front and ground water level at the embankment constructed in the Saemangeum area were predicted considering rainfall duration times and the slope stability analysis of the embankment was carried out according to prediction results of wetting front and ground water level. The embankment was formed by dredging soils. A suction stress, a cohesion and a frictional angle of dreding soils measured by soil tests were applied to estimate the unsaturated soil properties. According to the analysis results of the wetting front and the ground water level for various rainfall duration time, the wetting front began to descend from the upper part of embankment at the beginning time of rainfall and after 1 hour of rainfall duration time. After that, the ground water level continued to ascend as the rainfall duration time was getting longer. After rainfall, the ground water level was distributed at a certain depth, and the ground water level was gradually descending as time goes by. According to the slope stability analysis of the embankment considering the variation of the wetting front and the ground water level, the safety factor of slope was rapidly reduced as the rainfall began to infiltrate into the ground, and the minimum safety factor of slope was estimated after 24 hours of rainfall duration time. Meanwhile, the safety factor of slope was increased with regaining the matric suction in the ground after rainfall.
In Korea, collapse of railway slopes is frequently occurred due to tycoon or heavy rainfall doling rainy season and has been made personal and social damage greatly. In order to evaluate the stability of railway slopes under rainfall, explanatory variables and subordinate variables were selected for multivariate analysis. The sites which failure had occurred due to rainfall were investigated and critical rainfall was defined by the case that had high value of correlation factor after multivariate analyses for 121 cases had been executed. The maximum hourly rainfall during 24 hours before failure caused the collapse of railway embankment and the 0.3 square value of maximum hourly rainfall during 24 hours before failure caused the collapse of railway cut-slope, From the application to collapse examples, it is judged that critical rainfall curve will be used to estimate the stability of slopes.
