  • A regression water level forecasting model using data from stage and rainfall monitoring stations is developed to solve the difficulties which real-time forecasting models could not get the reliabilities by assuming future rainfall duration and intensity. The model could forecast future water levels of maximum 2 hours after using data from monitoring stations in Daejeon area. It shows stable forecasts by its maximum standard deviation is 5 cm, average standard deviations are 1~4 cm and most of coefficients of determination are larger than 0.95. It shows also more researches about the stationary of watershed which assumed in this regression method are necessary.

  • Shallow slope failures in residual soil during periods of prolonged infiltration are common over the world. Therefore, this study examines an approximate method to estimate the influence of infiltration on surficial stability of slopes by one-dimensional infiltration model. Modified GAML model based on the Green-Ampt model was extended to predict the infiltration behavior of two-layered slope. Then, the model has been considered to evaluate the likelihood of shallow slope failure which is induced by a particular rainfall event that accounts for the rainfall intensity and duration for various return periods in two-layered soil profile. The results obtained from the approximate method were compared with those obtained from numerical analyses. According to the results, with the use of properly estimated input parameters, the proposed method was found to give good results that agree reasonably well to those of the more rigorous finite element analyses.

  • In this paper, non working day for the construction project in Cheongju and Chungju region considering weather condition was estimated. In Cheongju region, non working day for outside and half outside work was 157days and for interior work 144days. For Chungju region, non working day for outside and half outside work was 160days and for interior work 144days. Non working day affected by temperature was 144 days at both Chungju and Cheongju. Non working day due to low temperature was 109 days and it due to high temperature was 45 days for Choengju. In Chungju, it was 11Sdays for cold weather, while it due to hot weather was 29 days.Non working day due to rainfall was 23 days at both region. To reduce the deviation between estimated non working days and measured ones, proper selection of the duration is required.

  • Memon(1995) pointed out that the groundwater recharge from the precipitation is affected by various factors such as the occurrence, intensity, duration, and seasonal distribution of rainfall; air temperature, humidity, and wind velocity; the character and thickness of the soil layer above the water table; vegetated cover, soil moisture content, depth to the water table, topography; and land use. To reflect above factors, groundwater recharge in Chungju basin is computed by using the SWAT-K which is a longterm continuous watershed hydrologic model. Frequency analysis is adopted to evaluate the existing values of potential amount of groundwater development which is made by the 10 year drought frequency rainfall multiplied by recharge coefficient. In this work, the recharge rates of 10 year drought frequency in subbains were computed and compared with the existing values of potential amount of groundwater development. This process could point out the problems of existing precesses used for computing potential amount of groundwater development.

  • Since the water quality of drinking water sources has been recognized as a big issue, the ministry of Environment in Korea is designing the total maximum daily load (TMDL) program for 4 major large rivers. The TMDL program can be successfully performed as controling the nonpoint pollutants from watershed area near the river. Of the various landuses in nonpoint pollution, parking lots and bridges are stormwater intensive landuses because of high imperviousness and high pollutant mass emissions from vehicular activities. Vehicle emissions from those areas include different pollutants such as heavy metals, oil and grease and particulates from sources such as fuels, brake pad and tire wear, etc. Especially the pollutant washed-off from the landuses are directly affecting to the river water quality. Therefore this research was conducted to understand the magnitude and nature of the stormwater emissions with the goal of quantifying stormwater pollutant concentrations and mass emission rates of pollutants from parking lot and bridges in Korea. In Kongju city areas, two monitoring sites were equipped with an automatic rainfall gages and an automatic flow meter for accumulating the useful data such as rainfall, water quality and runoff flow. This manuscripts will show the concentration changes during storm duration and EMCs to characterize the concentration profiles in different land uses. Also the first flush criteria will be suggested using dynamic EMCs. The definition of dynamic EMC is a new approach explaining the relationship of EMC and first flush effect.

  • The flood is the most general and frequently occurs among natural disasters. Generally flood by the rainfall which extends superexcellently for the occurrence but flash flood from severe rain storm gets up an absurd drowsiness at grade hour. This paper aims to 1 hour real-time flash flood and predict possibility at the area where is the possible flood will occur from the rainfall hour mountain after acquiring data in GIS(Geographic Information System) base by GcIUH(Geomorphoclimatic Instantaneous Unit Hydrograph). The flash flood occurrence is set up at 0.5m, 0.7m and 1.0m in standard depth. And this study suggests standard flood alarm which designed by probable flood according to duration time. The research result shows real-time flash flood evaluation has the suitable standard in the basin when comparing with the existing official warning announcement system considering topographical information.

  • This study was performed to analyze the degree of rainfalls, the duration time of rainfalls, the inclination of slopes and other damage causes depending on the ground condition, when the landslide occurs by the rainfall. Based on that, a big and a small model soil box were compared to examine the features of landslides, which is ultimately for forecasting landslides. An artificial rainfall device was installed in the model box, and the large model box has a real-size slope in it. Also, various measures were fulfilled such as collapse forms, a pore pressure, an earth pressure and moisture contents in order to analyze the effect of the model box size on the landslide mechanism and to test the usability of a small model box as a material for landslide experiments.

  • Non-structural improvements to urban drainage systems are necessary to overcome the elevated levels of urban flood damage. This study proposed a type of automatic pump/gate operation technology for urban pump stations that takes reservoir inflows and river water levels into account and its performance is compared with the current operation using the concept of residual flow-based resilience. The proposed automatic operation relies on three pump operations and two gate operations. The water depth at the monitoring node was used for the pump operation, and the monitoring node was selected in consideration of the first overflow node and the maximum overflow node. The target area is the Daegu Bisan urban pump station, and the rainfall data consisted of probability rainfall sets with durations of 30 minutes, 60 minutes, 90 minutes and 120 minutes, and frequencies of 30, 50, and 70 years. As a result of the application of the proposed operation, differences in the resilience between the automatic operation and the current operation were at least 5.20E-05 with a maximum of 8.07E-04. The longer the duration is, the greater the difference in the resilience.

  • Univariate frequency analyses are widely used in practical hydrologic design. However, a storm event is usually characterized by amount, intensity, and duration of the storm. To fully understand these characteristics and to use them appropriately in hydrologic design, a multivariate statistical approach is necessary. This study applied a Gumbel mixed model to a bivariate storm frequency analysis using hourly rainfall data collected for 46 years at the Seoul rainfall gauge station in Korea. This study estimated bivariate return periods of a storm such as joint return periods and conditional return periods based on the estimation of joint cumulative distribution functions of storm characteristics. These information on statistical behaviors of a storm can be of great usefulness in the analysis and assessment of the risk associated with hydrologic design problems.

  • A Copula approach has the advantage of providing structural dependencies for representing multivariate distributions for the hydrometeorological variable marginal distribution involved, however, copulas are inflexible for extending in high dimensions, and satisfy certain assumptions to make the dependency. In addition, since the process of estimating design rainfall under the future climate associated with durations given a return period is mainly analyzed by 24-hour annual maximum rainfalls, the dependency structure contains information only on the daily and sub-daily extreme precipitation. Methods based on bivariate copula do not provide information for other duration's dependencies, which causes the intensity to be reversed. The vine copula has been proposed to process the multivariate analysis as vines consisting of trees with nodes and edges connecting pair-copula construction. In this study, we aimed to downscale under climate change to produce sub-daily extreme precipitation data considering different durations based on vine copula.
