TIME SERIES ANALYSIS OF SPOT NDVI FOR IDENTIFYING IRRIGATION ACTIVITIES AT RICE CULTIVATION AREA IN SUPHANBURI PROVINCE, THAILAND

  • In this paper, the real scenario of water situation (e.g. water management, water availability and flooding) in an irrigated rice cultivation area in Suphanburi Province, Central-West Thailand is discussed together with the NDVI time series data. The result shown is derived by our classifier named 'Peak Detector Algorithm (PDA)'. The method discriminated 5 classes in terms of irrigation activities and cropping intensities, namely, Non-irrigated, Poorly irrigated - 1 crop/year, Irrigated - 2 crops/year, Irrigated - 3 crops/year and Others (no cultivation happens in a year or other land covers). The overall accuracy of all classified results (1999-2001) is around $77\%$ against independent ground truth data (general activities or function of an area). In the classified results, spatial and temporal inconsistency appeared significantly in the Western and Southern areas of Suphanburi. The inconsistency resulted mainly by anomaly of rainfall pattern in 1999 and their temporal irrigation activity. The algorithm however, was proved that it could detect actual change of irrigation status in a year.

미국 알라바마에서 지질학적으로 다른 두 하천의 Alkaline Phosphatase 활성도 (Alkaline Phosphatase Activity in Two Geologically Different Streams in Alabama, U.S.A.)

  • Alakline phosphatase activity (AP A) as a phosphorus deficiency measurement in flowing waters and of microhabitats (rocks, wood, leaves, and sediments) was measured and its relationship to flux of nutrients and response to rainfall events were determined for two geologically different streams in west Alabama from August to November. Results indicated water column AP A in both streams had a low correlation with levels of orthophosphate, total organic phosphorus, nitrate, ammonia, dissolved organic carbon, and discharge (r=0.075-0.583; n=g-IU. Communities on rock surfaces showed a higher AP A level than those on wood and leaves. Sediment passed through a $106{\mu}m$ sieve showed 2-9 times higher AP A level than material passed through $425{\mu}m$ sieve. The first storm after drought at Yellow Creek introduced substantial quantities of DOC (2.5 times baseflow concentrations) and $N0_3-N$ (5.8 times baseflow concentrations) which did not affect AP A significantly. The second storm at Little Schultz Creek caused minor changes in nutrient cocentrations; however $N0_3-N$ levels and AP A were drastically lower due to the dilution effect. Retention of stream water AP A at Yellow Creek and Little Schultz Creek on $0.45{\mu}m$ filter (54 and 43%, respectively) and $0.22{\mu}m$ (83 and 77% of total APA. respectively) indicated more free dissolved portion of the enzyme was present at Little Schultz Creek. Little Schultz Creek (with carbonate and with a higher productivity and biomass) showed a consistantly greater AP A activity $(132{\pm}54\;{\mu}M{\cdot}1^{-1}{\cdot}min^{-I};\;n=g)$ than Yellow Creek $(41{\pm}23\;{\mu}M{\cdot}1^{-I}{\cdot}min^{-I}$, with a sandstone substrate; n=l1, $p{\leq}O.OO1)$. Overall, a greater APA on all microhabitats and the presence of more dissolved enzyme in Little Schultz Creek during the study period may indicates it is more P deficient than Yellow Creek.

  • In order for the evaluation and analysis of the spring drought which has been periodically occurring in Korean peninsula since 2000, the use of satellite image data is increasing to investigate temporal and spatial characteristics of the drought areas. The recent spring droughts in south Korea have some characteristics. It last for short period in spring when the activity of vegetation is not lively and it have large areal deviation in the severity of drought. In this study, considering the characteristics of the spring drought in Korean peninsular, the MODIS satellite image data which has superior spatial and radiometric resolutions was used for the analysis of the spring drought. In two basins having different spatial characteristics, the drought events were selected and their severities were analyzed using the MODIS NDVI, LSWI, and daily rainfall data since 2000, and the spatial characteristics of the drought area were analyzed using the DEM, land cover, and digital forest map of the study areas.

상당온위를 사용한 동아시아 여름철 몬순의 6월 및 7월 주 변동 모드 분석 (Dominant Modes of the East Asian Summer Monsoon Using Equivalent Potential Temperature)

  • The monsoon front lies on East Asian region, but it gradually propagates to the north during the boreal summer. The equivalent potential temperature (EPT) reveals the thermodynamical features of air masses and monsoon front. Therefore, this study considered the thermodynamical EPT and dynamical wind fields to clarify the peculiarity of East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) variations in June and July, respectively. Western North Pacific subtropical high (WNPSH) and Okhotsk sea high (OSH) both play the crucial role to interannual variations of EASM frontal activity and amount of rainfall. The OSH is important in June, but the WNPSH is key factor in July. Furthermore, the OSH (June) is affected by North Atlantic tripolar sea surface temperature (SST) pattern and WNPSH (July) is influenced by North Indian Ocean SST warming.

Integrating extreme weather systems induced from typhoons and monsoon in nonstationary frequency analysis

  • In South Korea, annual maximum precipitation often occurs in association with mature typhoons in the western Pacific and from summer monsoon rains. In addition, certain years have no significant typhoon activity. Therefore, the characteristics of frequency distributions differ between extreme typhoons and monsoon events. Those extremes are also influenced from climate conditions in a different way. Application of nonstationary frequency analysis to the AMP data combined with typhoon and monsoon events might not always be reasonable. Therefore, we propose a novel approach of nonstationary frequency analysis to integrate extreme events of AMP induced from two main sources such as typhoons and monsoon in the current study. In this way, we were able to model the nonstationarity of extreme events from tropical storms and monsoon separately.

기후변화를 고려한 제주지역의 권역별 가뭄 평가 및 농업용수에의 영향 고찰 (Regional Drought Assessment Considering Climate Change and Relationship with Agricultural Water in Jeju Island)

  • Recently, the occurrences of droughts have been increased because of global warming and climate change. Water resources that mostly rely on groundwater are particularly vulnerable to the impact of precipitation variation, one of the major elements of climate change, are very sensitive to changes in the seasonal distribution as well as the average annual change in the viewpoint of agricultural activity. In this study, the status of drought for the present and future on Jeju Island which entirely rely on groundwater using SPI and PDSI were analyzed considering regional distribution of crops in terms of land use and fluctuation of water demand. The results showed that the precipitation distribution in Jeju Island is changed in intensity as well as seasonal variation of extreme events and the amount increase of precipitation during the dry season in the spring and fall indicated that agricultural water demand and supply policies would be considered by regional characteristics, especially the western region with largest market garden crops. Regarding the simulated future drought, the drought would be mitigated in the SPI method because of considering total rainfall only excluding intensity variation, while more intensified in the PDSI because it considers the evapotranspiration as well as rainfall as time passed. Moreover, the drought in the northern and western regions is getting worse than in the southern region so that the establishment of regional customized policies for water supply in Jeju Island is needed.

A study of characteristics of cumulative deposition of fallout Pu in environmental samples

  • This paper describes the cumulative deposition of fallout Pu in soil and lichen at the present time and give the characteristics of fallout Pu deposits in the soil. In the soil of the forest, the accumulated depositions of $^{239,240}Pu$ were estimated to be in the range of 34.0 to $101.2Bq\;m^{-2}$ with an average value of $65.3{\pm}21.6Bq\;m^{-2}$. The average inventory of $^{239,240}Pu$ in the forest was calculated to be two times higher than that in the hill. Also, the deposited activities of $^{239,240}Pu$ in cultivated soil were significantly lower than those in the hill or forest. However, the cumulative depositions of fallout Pu in the volcanic ash soil on Cheju Island were much higher than those in the forest and hill soils. The measured activity concentrations of Pu isotopes in lichens and mosses showed large variations, due to characteristics of species and life span of lichen and moss colonies. From depth profiles, it was found that most of the fallout Pu has been accumulated in upper 10 cm layer of soil. Except for a few cases, the concentrations of $^{239,240}Pu$ in soil tended to decrease exponentially with increasing soil depth. Among parameters affecting the cumulative deposition of fallout Pu, organic substances and rainfall play an important role in the retention and relative mobility of fallout Pu in the soil. However, pH showed a weak correlation with the deposition of fallout Pu in the soil. From sequential leaching experiments, Pu was found to be associated predominantly with the "organic" and "oxy-hydroxy" fractions. Both the activity ratios of $^{238}Pu/^{239,240}Pu$ and $^{241}Pu/^{239,240}Pu$ in soils, lichens and mosses and the atomic ratios of $^{240}Pu/^{239}Pu$ in soils are close to those observed in the cumulative deposit global fallout from nuclear weapon testings. The results obtained from this research make it possible to interpret and predict the behavior of fallout Pu under natural conditions.

중앙태평양 엘니뇨의 쇠퇴특성에 따른 낙동강 유역의 태풍영향 분석 (A Study on Typhoon Impacts in the Nakdong River Basin Associated with Decaying Phases of Central-Pacific El Niño)

  • 본 연구에서는 중앙태평양 지역의 비정상적인 해수면 온도변화를 3가지 진화패턴(Prolonged-decaying, Abrupt-decaying, Symmetric-decaying)에 따라 분류하였으며, 이에 따른 한반도 영향 태풍을 중심으로 태풍의 발생지점 및 경로, 중심기압의 특성변화와 낙동강유역의 태풍 강우량 및 중호우사상의 발생빈도에 대한 특성변화를 분석하였다. 분석결과, Prolonged-decaying 해와 Symmetric-decaying 해의 경우, 낙동강 유역의 태풍에 의한 여름철 강우량 및 중호우사상의 발생빈도가 평년보다 크게 나타났다. 그러나, Abrupt-decaying 해의 경우, 태풍강우는 대체로 감소하는 패턴을 보이는 것으로 분석되었으며, 이는 태풍의 발생지점이 비교적 한반도에 근접하게 위치하며 태풍의 중심기압이 높고 태풍의 경로가 대체로 일본으로 이동하기 때문인 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구의 성과는 중앙태평양 엘니뇨의 진화패턴별 태풍활동특성 및 지역적 태풍강우 특성 분석을 통하여 침수피해를 저감하고 기후변화에 대비한 적응방안 수립에 유용한 기초자료로 활용될 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

하천구역 내 경작활동으로 인한 비점오염물질 유출특성 (Runoff Characteristics of Non-Point Source according to Cultivation Activity in River District)

  • 본 논문에서는 하천구역 내에서의 경작활동으로 인한 비점오염원 유출특성을 파악하기 위하여 팔당상수원보호구역의 경기도 광주시에 위치한 G지역(논, 비닐하우스)과 남양주시의 S지역(노지 밭)을 선정하여 강우 시 현장조사를 수행하였다. 담수기능을 갖는 논은 강우강도에 따라 유출유량이 완만한 증감을 나타내어 제내지에 위치한 논의 유출특성과 유사한 현상을 보여주었다. 그러나 비닐하우스와 노지 밭 모두 강우강도에 비례하여 유출유량이 급격히 증가하는 현상을 보여주었다. 논, 비닐하우스 및 노지 밭의 BOD 평균 유출농도는 각각 2.0 mg/L, 2.8 mg/L, 7.9 mg/L로서 노지 밭의 유출농도가 높게 나타났으며, 강우사상에 따른 토양의 유출에 기인하여 SS, T-N 및 T-P 유출농도도 노지 밭이 가장 높은 것으로 조사되었다. 경작지별 배출부하량을 산정한 결과, 논의 T-N 배출부하량이 1,793.9 kg/year으로 밭에 비해 높게 나타났으며, 노지 밭의 SS 배출부하량은 69,704 kg/year로 전체 배출부하량의 70% 이상을 차지하는 것으로 산정되었다.

인공위성을 이용한 백두산 화산 마그마 활동의 전조현상 인지 가능성 연구 (The Study on the Possibility of Using Satellite in Monitoring Precursor of Magma Activity in the Baegdusan Volcano)

  • 1000 AD 경에 매우 강력한 화산 폭발을 하였던 백두산은 아직도 폭발 가능성을 가지고 있다. 따라서 백두산의 폭발 가능성을 사전에 확인할 수 있는 정기적인 감시가 필요하다. 하지만 지정학적인 이유로 백두산 지역에 정기적인 감시 시설을 설치하거나, 정기적인 관측 자료를 얻는 것이 매우 힘든 상황이다. 따라서 인공위성을 이용한 백두산 화산 폭발 가능성에 대한 정기적인 감시 기술 개발이 필요한 실정이다. GRACE 인공위성에서 획득한 백두산 지역의 중력 자료로부터 계산된 지오이드 자료의 지난 10년간의 변화를 보면, 백두산 지역에서 지진 발생을 포함한 마그마 활동 가능성이 인지된 2002년부터 2005년 사이에 매우 뚜렷한 지오이드 감소가 확인되었다. 그리고 동일한 시기에 백두산 지역의 강수량이 줄어들지 않음을 고려할 때 이러한 변화는 백두산 하부의 마그마 활동에 연관되어있을 가능성을 지시한다. 백두산 지역에서 CHAMP 인공위성을 이용하여 측정된 지난 2000년도부터 2010년까지의 자력 변화를 살펴보면, 마그마 활동이 활발했던 2000년에서 2005년도 사이에 자력이 감소하고 그 이후 다시 증가하는 현상을 보여준다. 이러한 자력의 감소는 백두산 하부 마그마 온도의 증가에 따른 주변 암석의 비자성화(demagnetization)에 의한 것일 가능성이 있다. 이러한 자료는 인공위성을 이용하여 관측한 지오이드와 자력의 변화가 백두산 하부 마그마 활동을 감시하는데 사용될 수 있는 가능성이 있음을 지시한다.
