Slope failure triggered by rainfall produces severe effects on the serviceability and stability of railway, Therefore, slope stability problem is one of the major concerns on the operation of railway. In this study, the rainfall conditions triggering slopes failure adjacent to railroads are investigated and the numerical analysis approach in consideration of infiltration and limit equilibrium method based upon multiple slip surfaces are proposed. The rainfall conditions triggering slope failure are as follow: cumulative rainfall is in the range of 150~500 mm, and duration is from 3 to 24 hours. Base upon the rainfall conditions, infiltration analysis and limit equilibrium method for infinite slope condition are carried out. The depth of infinite slope is assumed as 2 m and the multiple slip surfaces modeled with 16.7 cm interval from the bottom slip surface located at the 2 m depth. The assumed bottom slip surface is the location at which factor of safety is converging. The proposed approach shows more reasonable results than the results from the general codes assuming water table at slope surface. In addition, three dimensional plot of cumulative rainfall, rainfall duration, and factor of safety shows that slope stability analysis in consideration of rainfalll must account for cumulative rainfall (rainfall duration).

One of the most difficult problem to estimate the flood inflow is how to understand the effective rainfall. The effective rainfall is absolutely influenced by the condition of soil moisture in the watershed just before the storm event. DAWAST model developed to simulate the daily streamflow considering the meteologic and geographic characteristics in the Korean watersheds was applied to understand the soil moisture and estimate the effective rainfall rather accurately through the daily water balance in the watershed. From this soil moisture and effective rainfall, concentration time, dimensionless hydrograph, and addition of baseflow, the rainfall-runoff model for flood flow was developed by converting the concept of long-term runoff into short-term runoff. And, real-time flood forecasting model was also developed to forecast the flood-inflow hydrograph to the river and reservoir, and called RETFLO model. According to the model verification, RETFLO model can be practically applied to the medium and small river and reservoir to forecast the flood hydrograph with peak discharge, peak time, and volume. Consequently, flood forecasting and warning system in the river and the reservoir can be greatly improved by using personal computer.

This study is to evaluate the parameter behavior of VfloTM distributed rainfall-runoff model by applying 3 kinds of rainfall interpolation methods viz. Inverse Distance Weighting (IDW), Kriging (KRI), and Thiessen network (THI). For the 1,544 $km^2$ Dongcheon watershed of Nakdong river, the model was calibrated using 4 storm events in 2007 and 2009, and validated using 2 storm events in 2010. The model was calibrated with Nash-Sutcliffe model efficiency of 0.97 for IDW, 0.94 for KRI, and 0.95 for THI respectively. For the sensitive parameters, the saturated hydraulic conductivity ($K_{sat}$) for IDW, KRI, and THI were 0.33, 0.31, and 0.43 cm/hr, and the soil suction head at the wetting front (${\Psi}_f$) were 4.10, 3.96, and 5.19 cm $H_2O$ respectively. These parameters affected the infiltration process by the spatial distribution of antecedent moisture condition before a storm.
This paper presents the results of a numerical investigation into the behavior of retaining wall subject to cycles of wetting and drying due to rainfall. The stress-pore pressure coupled finite element modeling strategy was first established for stimulating the wall behavior. A series of finite element analyses were then performed on a range of conditions including different rainfall and backfill conditions. The results indicated that the rainfall intensity was the primary influencing factor for the wall behavior. Also revealed was that the pre-rainfall condition determines the magnitudes and the distribution of matric suction which in fact has a significant impact on the behavior of wall during a major rainfall. This result demonstrates the importance of incorporating the pre-rainfall condition for numerical modeling of walls during heavy rainfall. Practical implications of the findings from this study are discussed in great detail.
The vertical tensile stress, ${\sigma}_y$, in the contact zone between the overlay (mortar layer) and substratum (base concrete) can be the main cause of the failure phenomenon of overlaid concrete structures. The development of tensile stress, ${\sigma}_y$, due to external rainy condition was analytically investigated using finite element method. Rainfall intensity $(n_R\;=\;1/a,\;t_R\;=\;10min,\;60min)$, thickness of overlay (do=1,2,4,10 cm) and overlay material (CM,ECM,EM) were the main variables in the analyses. An equation was suggested with which the development of vertical tensile stress, ${\sigma}_y$, in the rainy condition could be determined. Using this equation, it is possible to select proper material properties and overlay thicknesses to prevent failure in the contact zone due to thermally transient condition caused by rainfall.
To investigate the streamflow impact of land cover changes by a typhoon, WMS HEC-1 storm runoff model was applied by using land cover information before and after the typhoon. The model was calibrated with three storm events of 1985 to 1988 based on 1985 land cover condition for a 192.7 $km^2$ watershed in northeast coast of South Korea. After the model was tested, it was run to estimate impacts of land cover change by the typhoon RUSA occurred in 2002 (31 August - 1 September) with 897.5 mm rainfall. The land covers before and after the typhoon were prepared using Landsat 7 ETM+ of September 11 of 2000 and Landsat 5 TM of September 29 of 2002 respectively. For the 6.9 $km^2$ damaged area (3.6 % of the watershed), the peak runoff and total runoff by the changed land cover condition increased 12.5 % and 12.7 % for 50 years rainfall frequency and 1.4 % and 1.8 % for 500 years rainfall frequency respectively based on AMC (Antecedent Moisture Condition)-I condition.

Background: Large-scale land-use change is being caused by various socioeconomic problems. Land-use change is necessarily accompanied by changes in the regional carbon balance in terrestrial ecosystems and affects climate change. Therefore, it is crucial to understand the correlation between environmental factors altered by land-use change and the carbon balance. To address this issue, we studied the characteristics of soil carbon flux and soil moisture content related to rainfall events in mountain pastures converted from deciduous forest in Korea. Results: The average soil moisture contents (SMC) during the study period were 23.1% in the soil respiration (SR) plot and 25.2% in the heterotrophic respiration (HR) plot. The average SMC was increased to 2.1 and 1.1% in the SR and HR plots after rainfall events, respectively. In addition, saturated water content was 29.36% in this grassland. The soil water content was saturated under the consistent rainfall of more than $5mm\;h^{-1}$ rather than short-term heavy rainfall event. The average SR was increased to 28.4% after a rainfall event, but the average HR was decreased to 70. 1%. The correlation between soil carbon flux rates and rainfall was lower than other environmental factors. The correlation between SMC and soil carbon flux rates was low. However, HR exhibited a tendency to be decreased when SMC was 24.5%. In addition, the correlation between soil temperature and respiration rate was significant. Conclusions: In a mountain pasture ecosystem, rainfall induced the important change of soil moisture content related to respiration in soil. SR and HR were very sensitive to change of SMC in soil surface layer about 0-10-cm depth. SR was increased by elevation of SMC due to a rainfall event, and the result was assumed from maintaining moderate soil moisture content for respiration in microorganism and plant root. However, HR was decreased in long-time saturated condition of soil moisture content. Root has obviously contributed to high respiration in heavy rainfall, but it was affected to quick depression in respiration under low rainfall. The difference of SMC due to rainfall event was causative of a highly fluctuated soil respiration rate in the same soil temperature condition. Therefore, rainfall factor or SMC are to be considered in predicting the soil carbon flux of grassland ecosystems for future climate change.
This paper presents a case study and numerical investigation to study the hydro-mechanical response of a shallow landslide in unsaturated slopes subjected to rainfall infiltration using a coupled model. The coupled model was interpreted in details by expressing the balance equations for soil mixture and the coupled constitutive equations. The coupled model was verified against experimental data from the shearing-infiltration triaxial tests. A real case of shallow landslide occurred on Mt. Umyeonsan, Seoul, Korea was employed to explore the influence of rainfall infiltration on the slope stability during heavy rainfall. Numerical results showed that the coupled model accurately predicted the poromechanical behavior of a rainfall-induced landslide by simultaneously linking seepage and stress-strain problems. It was also found that the coupled model properly described progress failure of a slope in a highly transient condition. Through the comparisons between the coupled and uncoupled models, the coupled model provided more realistic analysis results under rainfall. Consequently, the coupled model was found to be feasible for the stability and seepage analysis of practical engineering problems.
The frequency analyses of annual maximum rainfall data for 22 rainfall gauging stations is Korea were performed. The method of moments (MOM), maximum likelihood (ML), and probability weighted moments (PWM) were used in parameter estimation. The GEV distribution was selected as an appropriate model for annual maximum rainfall data based on parameter validity condition, graphical analysis, separation effect, and goodness of fit tests. For the selected GEV model, spatial analysis was performed and rainfall intensity-duration-frequency equation was derived by using linearization technique. The derived rainfall intensity-duration-frequency equation can be used for estimating rainfall quantiles of the selected stations with convenience and reliability in practice.
