Today's wireless communication needs the super-high speed for picture transmission as well as voice. The optical communication with the very wide bandwidth is suitable for this demand. To fulfill the optical wireless communication, however, the atmospheric attenuation in rainy weather condition must be overcome. In the optical satellite up-link communication between geo-satellite and earth station, the factors of attenuation are turbulence, pointing error, scattering, and so on. The most serious factor for these is the scattering by rain. Under the weather conditiion of rain and cloud, in this paper, the atmospheic attenuation which affects the optical satellite up-link communication was considered, and the optimum idameter of the optical satellite transmitting antenna in the earth station versus elevation angles, data rates and rainfall rates was presented.

In a wireless channel above microwave frequency, rain attenuation is very important. In order to predict rain attenuation, 1-min. rain rate distribution is required. This paper discusses appropriate conversion methods to estimate 1-minute rain rate from that of other integration time. Based on the measurement data filed in ITU-R WP3J including ETRI data for 6 consecutive years, distributions of rain rate with 1-, 5-, 10-, 20-, 30-minute integration time were analyzed, both on the global and regional basis, and the parametric relationship between the statistical characteristics of 1-minute and other measurement data were investigated to deduce the conversion methods. It is shown that the global model works good with good accuracy for 5-, 10-, 20-min integration time, and the global model is also applicable globally with good accuracy for 5-, 10-, 20-min integration time. The global conversion model was adopted last year as an ITU-R document for new recommendation. The regional conversion model would also be very useful for locations of similar climatic zone.

The frequencies for HAPS used in fixed wireless access are allocated in the millimeter wave bands. The systems using these frequencies can have a serious impact on the radio communication qualities due to rain. In this paper, we compare the specific rain attenuation using CM(combined) raindrop size distribution with those using different sevral raindrop size distributions for the frequency bands 28/48㎓. The rain attenuations using CM raindrop size distribution for the path between the earth and HAPS platform according to the elevation angle are described.

This paper evaluates the influence of rainfall on propagated signal at different time exceedance percentages of an average year, over the climate zones of the country. Specifically, it demonstrates critical and non critical signal fade or signal outage time exceedance (0.001% to 1%) for Ku, K, and Ka-band systems in an average year. The study was carried out using meteorological data made available by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) over a period of 10 years (2009-2018). The four climate zones in the country were represented by five (5) locations; Maidugiri (warm desert climate), Sokoto (tropical dry climate), Port Harcourt (tropical monsoon climate), Abuja and Enugu (tropical savanna climate). The parameters were simulated into the International Telecommunications Union Recommended (ITU-R) models for rain attenuation over the tropics and results presented using MatLab and Origin Lab. Results of Ku band propagations showed that only locations in the tropical savanna and tropical monsoon climates experienced total signal outage for time percentage exceedance equal to or below 0.01% for both horizontal and vertical polarizations. At K band propagations, the five locations showed to have experienced signal outage at time exceedance equal to and below 0.01%, almost same was recorded for the Ka-band propagation. It was also observed that horizontal and vertical polarization of signal had slightly different rain attenuation values for the studied bands at the five locations, with horizontal polarization having higher values than vertical polarization.
In this study, several methods to convert rain rate data for various time intervals to one-minute rates are compared. High-resolution tipping bucket precipitation records for seven locations in a tropical region are analyzed and compared using these conversion models. The Segal, Chebil, and Burgueno methods give the smallest average errors below 10% at different integration times.

Microwave and millimeter waves are considered suitable frequency ranges for diverse applications. The prediction of rain attenuation required the 1-min rainfall rate distribution, particularly for data obtained locally from experimental measurement campaigns over a given location. Rainfall rate data acquired from Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) for nine major sites are analyzed to investigate the statistical stability of the cumulative distribution of rainfall rate, as obtained from a 10-year measurement. In this study, we use the following rain rate conversion techniques: Segal, Burgueno et al., Chebil and Rahman, exponential, and proposed global coefficient methods. The performance of the proposed technique is tested against that of the existing rain rate conversion techniques. The nine sites considered for the average 1-min rain rate derivation are Gwangju, Daegu, Daejeon, Busan, Seogwipo, Seoul, Ulsan, Incheon, and Chuncheon. In this paper, we propose a conversion technique for a suitable estimation of the 1-min rainfall rate distribution.
In satellite communication, attenuation, scattering, and depolarization of relatively high frequency waves such as millimeter waves are strongly influenced by rain. In order to study the rain attenuation, we introduce a new theoretical method, which enables us to obtain the reflection and transmission coefficients in arbitrary medium. We adopt this method to examine how the electromagnetic radiation is affected by homogeneous spherical raindrops. It is assumed that the raindrop shape is spherical and linearly locate in one direction. For the radiation of wave in raindrops, we consider the effective permittivity, in which the raindrop is assumed to be spherical. By adopting the invariant imbedding approach, the 1st order differential equations are derived for the reflection and transmission coefficients. We investigate the transmission and reflection of waves for various incident angles when the spherical raindrops are assumed to have random sizes.
Rain attenuation can cause a serious problem that an availability of space communication link on Ka band becomes low. To reduce the effect of rain attenuation on the error performance of space communications in Ka band, an adaptive coding and modulation (ACM) scheme is required. In this paper, to achieve a reliable telemetry data transmission, we propose an adaptive coding and modulation level using turbo code recommended by the consultative committee for space data systems (CCSDS) and various modulation methods (QPSK, 8PSK, 4+12 APSK, and 4+12+16 APSK) adopted in the digital video broadcasting-satellite2 (DVB-S2).
