  • Station is an important building in high-speed railway, and its vibration and noise may significantly affect the comfort of waiting passengers. A coupling vibration model for train-structure system is established to analyze and evaluate the vibration level of a typical waiting hall under dynamic train load. The motion of a four-axle vehicle with two suspension system is modeled in multi-body dynamics with linear springs and dampers employed. The station is modeled as a whole finite element structure which is 113 m in longitudinal and 163.5 m in lateral, and the stiffness of the station foundation is considered. According to the assumptions that both wheel and rail are rigid bodies and keep contact to each other in vertical direction, and the wheel/rail interaction and displacement coordination in horizontal direction is defined by the simplified Kalker creep theory, the vehicle spatial vibration model has 27 degrees-of-freedom. An overall analysis procedure is made of the train moving through the station, by which the dynamic responses of the train and the station are calculated. According to the comparison between analysis and test results, the actual connection status between different parts of the station is estimated and the vibration level of the waiting hall is evaluated.

  • Traction motors for driving and power conversion devices using semiconductor switch are equipped with a transportation systems such as an electrical railway system. Power conversion devices have the possibility of malfunction by external electromagnetic waves. As a result, these could affect the safe operation of the railway. Moreover, the electromagnetic waves above safe limits will be harmful to the passengers inside the railway vehicles or anyone working around the rail-track. For this reason, the importance and need about the reliability check and complement of electromagnetic waves generated from the IPT(Inductive Power Transfer) system have been suggested for the safe application of the IPT system to the railway system. In this study, prediction for the electromagnetic wave properties was conducted through FEM(Finite Element Method) analysis of 5kW-class IPT system design model. Next, the 5kW IPT system prototype was made and then the small-scaled railway vehicle was made to mount the IPT system and the energy management system. Finally, the electromagnetic waves generated from the real small-scaled IPT system were measured and analyzed, and then the reliability check of predictions by FEM analysis were carried out.

  • Dynamic analysis is necessary for the High-Speed Railway vehicle which aims to run on max 400km/h. Especially, dynamic simulation using CAE(Computer Aided Engineering) can help to reduce the time of development of the High-Speed Railway vehicles. Also, it helps to reduce prices and improve the quality such as safety, stability and ride. There are many dynamic software for a railway vehicle, such as Vampire and ADAMS-Rail. There are limitations for each software and difficulties to analyze overall dynamics for entire railway system. To overcome these limitations, in this study, a program which can simulate entire railway vehicles was developed. This program is easy to use because it was developed using C++, which is object-oriented programming language. In addition, the basic platform for the development of dynamic solver is prepared using the nodal, modal coordinate system with a wheel-rail contact module. Rigid, flexible and large deformable body systems can be modeled by a user according to the characteristic of a desired system. Its reliability is verified by comparison with a commercial analysis program.

  • The reduction unit is one of the most important components for railway vehicles because the torque of the motor must be transmitted to the wheels of the vehicle by the reduction unit. The faults in the reduction units of high-speed trains are caused by damage such as gear, fatigue. These have serious impacts on safety of the train during operation. To address this development of a system for monitoring, fault diagnosis of the reduction unit is needed to keep the vehicle running safely. Before that can be accomplished, it is most important to understand the vibration characteristics of the reduction unit in a normal state. Vibration diagnosis technology using characteristic-analysis of vibration waveform and frequency is known to be the most effective method for fault diagnosis. In this paper, we analyzed the vibration characteristics of the reduction units two Korean high-speed trains (KTX and KTX II), under normal conditions, by two test methods (driving gear test, full-vehicle test).

  • In this work, the stability and safety analysis are carried out to predict the performance of a next generation high-speed railway vehicle (HEMU-400X). Since the safety of the high-speed railway vehicles is very important, it is meaningful to predict the dynamic performance and stability of the railway vehicles using a numerical model at a railway vehicle design step. The critical speed of the dynamic model depending on the conicity of the wheel is calculated in the stability analysis. The critical speed calculated in this analysis is over 400km/h for the conicity value of 0.15, which is determined on the basis of representative international standard, UIC 518. Also, the lateral and vertical accelerations at several points of the same dynamic model are calculated for the safety analysis. In the simulation, the dynamic model runs at the test speed of 440km/h, which is determined considering a maximum target speed, and the total driving distance is 30km. And those estimated values are less than the allowed maximum acceleration values of UIC 518.

  • When the railway vehicle passing through curves & transitions, the running speed must improve by proposing the practical standard about maximum running possibility speed of each section on existing line considering running safety. In this paper, when the railway vehicle passing through curves of actual track conditions (Namsunghyun-Chungdo up & down lines), the effect that has influence on running safety is examined to devise the high speed of vehicle which passing through curves which risk of derailment is high. The running safety analysis is performed that running speed by curve radius improves 5-20% compared with existing speed under actual track conditions. In result of the running safety analysis, in case the speed condition is fewer than 15% compared with existing speed, the derailment coefficient and unloading ratio are within acceptable level. so we could confirm possibility of speed improvement on the whole Namsunghyun-Chungdo up & down lines.

  • Speeding up of railway vehicles requires weight reduction of the vehicle body. However, when the vehicle body is lighter, the sound insulation performance for blocking the noise from the outside is reduced. Aluminum is an important material used in the bodywork of transportation vehicles such as railway vehicles, aircraft, and automobiles. In this study, the bending stiffness and sound insulation performance of foamed aluminum with sandwich structure are investigated experimentally. The transmission loss is measured in accordance with the international standard ASTM E 2249-02. The mass-law deviation is used to evaluate the sound insulation performance per weight. In order to examine the applicability of the foamed aluminum sandwich panel to railway vehicles, the analysis of bending stiffness and an experimental review are carried out at the same time.

  • From the view point of railway vehicle dynamics, the interaction between wheel and rail have an huge effect on the behavior of the vehicle. This phenomenon is an unique motion, only for railway vehicles. Furthermore, close investigation of the backgrounds of the interaction is the key to estimate the dynamic behavior of the vehicle, successfully. To evaluate the model including flexible bodies such as car body and catenary system of the next generation express train, it is necessary to develop proper dynamic solver including a wheel rail contact module. In this study, wheel-rail contact module is developed using the general purpose dynamic solver. First of all, the procedure for calculation of the wheel-rail contact force has been established. Generally, yaw angle of the wheelset is ignored. Sets of information are summarized as tables and splined for further uses. With this information, normal force and creep coefficient can be extracted and used for FASTSIM algorithm, which has been shown good reliability over years. Normal force and longitudinal, lateral force at the contact surface are also calculated. Those data are verified by commercial railway simulation program 'VAMPIRE'. This procedure and program can offer a basic process for estimation of the dynamic behavior and wear of the wheel-rail system, even while running on the curved rail. Finally, multi-dimensional inspection tool will be developed including the prediction of the derailment.
