Calibration of Timetable Parameters for Rail-Guided Systems

  • In order to achieve a comprehensive utilization of railway networks, it is necessary to accurately assess the timetable indicators that effect the train operation. This paper describes the parameter calibration for two timetable indicators: scheduled running time and scheduled dwell time. For the scheduled running time, an existing model is employed and the single timetable parameter (percentage of minimum running time) in that model is optimized. For the scheduled dwell time, two intrinsic characteristics: the significance of stations and the average headway at each station are proposed firstly to form a new model, and the corresponding timetable parameters (the weight of the significance and the weight of the average headway) are calibrated subsequently. The Floyd Algorithm is used to obtain the connectivity among stations, which represents the significance of the stations. A case study is conducted in a light rail transportation system with 17 underground stations. The results of this research show that the optimal value of the scheduled running time parameter can be automatically determined, and the proposed model for the scheduled dwell time works well with a high coefficient of determination and low relative root mean square error through the leave-one-out validation.

  • In this paper, the south-north railway transportation demand and the present situation of Huning line(from Shanghai to Nanjing) are analyzed, and the important significance and the simulation, we also discuss the transportation organization plans, the transportation capacities, the stage by stage implement programs and the comprehensive social economic benefits on the condition of raising the train speed on Huning line.

  • Transportation cost takes a major portion on logistics cost. The reduction of transportation cost is a key issue to achieve national competitiveness and logistics cost reduction. And railway must play a important role to shift from road freight transport to environment-friendly transport. There are many idle freight cars in railway freight transportation and they give rise to inefficient operation of freight car. It is well known that the main reason of idle freight cars is unbalanced demand according to direction. In this study, we analysed the current status on idle freight cars in railway at the level of daily data. This results help follow-up research to cut down idle freight cars in railway.

  • The railway industry is constrained by barriers within itself, which prevent it from competing effectively with other means of transportation, particularly road transportation. Therefore, many countries have adopted the policies that aim to remove barriers to providing international transport services by creating a common framework for railway industry. Recently, the European Union has produced the European Interoperability Directives, which aim to remove the technical problems involved in running trains between member states. In this respect, it is important to harmonize the technical requirements and specifications of Korea railway industry. This paper presents an action plan for the advancement of railway technical specifications in Korea. For this, the railway law and regulations of other countries are reviewed. Also the technical problems and operational barriers of railway industry are analyzed in Korea. This will help transportation agencies to resolve the technical problems of criteria in Korea railway industry.

  • The article expounds that the speed competition is the motive force of each transportation means. It also analyzes the current condition of the speed of Chinese railways. The developing strategy for Chinese railway is to raise the speed of the existing lines as a primary step and to construct the high-speed railway in selected sections concurrently, which proved that constructing high-speed railway in Beijing-Shanghai area is the best choice.

  • It is connected with various gauges existing in Euro-Asian continents. Such differences impedes the operation seriously as on the contact of railway tracks of different gauge the cargo must be either transshipped or the running assemblies of rail vehicles must be exchanged. Those operations are costly, time-consuming and require extended infrastructure together with very expensive storage and transshipment facilities at border-crossing point. Moreover, those operations extend transportation time considerably. Therefore, effectiveness of railway transportation systems significantly depends on track gauge change 1435/1520mm, which connects with complicated handling-shifting operations. The paper concerns assessment of effectiveness in strategical rail systems with gauge changing. The paper presents short description of transport system with gauge changing and initial assessment of shifting technologies. Method of system assessment comparison based on Life Cycle Cost model is described here as well.

  • The public, mass transportation, monopoly, speediness and the long distance transportation of railway have realized by representative advantage from former days. But realization for railway that is declining by industry on the decline by the 1970s since the 1st World War has been changing recently newly. Development of a technology and fast change of industry environment exerted big effect about traffic. And IT and wave in 21C that is spoken for to environment changed together paradigm for railway.   • The government have plans to improve the railway transport capacity and transport hub for the sustainable national transport and logistics system. Specially, there are much efforts to improve transportation capacity such as high speed transportation of rail freight, enlargement of BT train, development of double stack train, etc. between railway transport hubs. If the transport capacity between railway logistics hubs is increased as planned, we must increase the handling capacity of railway hub terminals. But there are limits to enlarge the terminal infrastructure because of investment scale, location circumstances and urban development plans. To ensure the capacity, with the minimum required enlargement of infrastructure, it is necessary to extremely increase the efficiency of terminal operations. For improving the efficiency, we have to introduce the efficient terminal operation systems based on u-IT and operation optimize technologies. In this paper, we analyse the issues and problems of railway terminals(including ICD) and suggest the concept of intelligent railway terminal and the construction components of technology.

Plans for constructing National transportation Networks for security of Railway System Safety (철도시스템 안전확보를 위한 네트워크망 구축 방안 연구)

  • Safety of railway systems is made by understanding causes and process of railway accidents and grasping contents of a many of accidents. Now, Being carried out a research and analysis about an extensive areas(the whole country, the metropolitan area, the five metropolitan cities, the city of three hundred thousands and over of people) and field, thereafter the National Transportation (Railway) Database has been constructed and developed to prepare the base that reduced an overlapping survey using a standardized-material offer. A purpose of this research is to derive plans to apply National transport DB including information in the field of transportation systems to domestic railway safety management. The research analyses the present conditions of establishing national transport DB, and reviews problems when that use to railway system. As being based in this, the research derived definitions and using plans of layers available to use, and plans of establishing and systematizing information for desirable railway network.

A Study on Modern City Development of Shenyang in terms of Formation and Development of Railway Network(1895~1945) (철도의 형성과 발전을 중심으로 본 심양의 근대도시 발전과정에 관한 연구(1898~1945))

  • Shenyang was one of the representative transportation hub of Northeast China during the modern period. The formation and development of the railway network gave great influence on Shenyang's city development. In order to understand the relationship between railway and city development, first, we classified Shenyang's city development period by the railway network's formation and expansion process. Then, we analyzed the relationship between railway and city space by five categories. The results of this study are as follows. First, before railway was constructed, Shenyang was a castle city, which also was the economic center of Northeast China. This was the main reason Shenyang was chosen as a railway zone. During the modern period, the castle structure became an obstacle to city transportation and environment, therefore, it was disposed. During the period of railways' expansion, South Manchuria, Jingfeng and Shenhai railway line was constructed in Shenyang. Since each line had different operation organizations, city sites along the railways were planned separately. However, these operation organizations had one common purpose, which was to use railway as an accelerator for economic development. During the period of railway's military usage, railway was reorganized as military supply transport for the Japanese, which also was used as a tool for the expansion of colonialism. Second, after Shenyang's city space was reconstructed along the railway, it created a close connection with city structure, city facilities, landscape and city transportation system. Hence, the railway system played a key role in modern city planning.
