Measured acoustic signal from operating high speed train contains frequency change called doppler shift due to its motion. To avoid this doppler shift wind tunnel test is required. But scaledown of model can cause change of source characteristics. And measurements using some part of train cannot reproduce real flow condition. The best way to recognize real noise source characteristics is measurement from operating high speed train but doppler shift makes it hard. So, we developed simple dedopplerization technique for one microphone and applied to field test data of high speed train. Through this, we could capture real frequency of noise from operating high speed train.
A turnout system which permits trains to pass from one track to another consists of the switch, the crossing, lead rails which are necessary to connect the switch and the crossing, two guard rails and a switch machine for operating the switch. A turnout is the sole moving part among the railway components and has complex configuration, so the safety has always been raised an issue. In Korea, it is planned to adopt the high speed tilting train, which operates at the maximum speed of 180km/h, at conventional lines by the year of 2010. However, for the application of the tilting train to conventional lines, it is prerequisite to establish a stable turnout system allowing the tilting train to pass through it without reducing speed. Therefore, the improved turnout system for the speed-up of conventional lines has been developed and the prototype of the turnout system has been constructed. In this study, evaluation of noise characteristics around the improved turnout system was performed through the field measurements. Field measurements of noise around the conventional and the high-speed turnout system were also carried out for the comparison.

The sensitivity of interior noise that the passengers perceive is comparatively high in the train, and structure-borne and air-borne types of noises come into the train. In this paper, to analyze contributions of these noise sources operational transfer path analysis(OTPA) is used. OTPA has some advantages of executing the contribution rates of several sources simultaneously, and in this work, 29 points are measured while running. Transfer functions between reference measurement points and response measurement points are calculated by the singular value decomposition(SVD) and Principal component analysis(PCA) method, and the frequency characteristics of the noise source are successfully derived. Also the interior noise is predicted and compared with measurement data to show the reliability.

After the Rio declaration on environment and development in 1992, developed countries are undertaking 'environmentally sustainable transportation (EST)' projects. To meet the needs for EST, current transportation policies in Korea are rapidly reforming and one of its concerns is modernizing and upgrading railway freight system. Planning new railroad construction projects is increasing and subsequent environmental impact assessment (EIA) demands improvements, especially in both the EIA and decision making systems. In this paper, we discuss the present status of EIA for railroad construction projects, especially, by analyzing the EIA documents accumulated for last six years. The EIA for railroad construction projects .accounts for only $4.9\%$ of total project EIAs during 1998-2003. However, the portion is gradually increasing. Major environmental concerns for EIA in railroad construction projects were geomorphological and ecological changes, protection of rare organisms, air pollution, water quality, wast management, noise, etc. We also compared the characteristics of environmental impacts of railroad construction with those of vehicle road construction. The result shows that railroad construction usually requires 3${\~}$4 times longer tunnels and bridges for a given length than vehicle road construction. In addition, the amounts of geomorphological and ecological changes (road-cutting, embankment, devegetation, etc.) in railroad construction were generally less than $40\%$ of those in vehicle road construction. In order to develop environmentally friendly railway systems, monitoring studies for environmental impacts of railroads such as habitat fragmentation and road kills, dispersal of alien plants, tunnelling effects on groundwater and vegetation, and noise impacts are highly required.

Curve squealing of inter-city railway vehicle is a noise with high acoustic pressure and rather narrow frequency spectra. This noise turns out to be very annoying for the people living in the neighborhood of locations and the passenger in railway vehicle where this phenomenon occurs. Squealing is caused by a self-exited stick-slip oscillation in the wheel-rail contact. Curve squeal noise of railway vehicles that passed by a factor of the speed limit, so to overcome in order to improve running performance is one of the largest technology. In the present paper, characteristic of squeal noise behavior at the Hanvit-200 tilting train test-site. Curve squealing of railway wheels/rail contact occurs in R400~ R800 curves with a frequency range of about 4~11 kHz. If the curve is less than the radius of wheel frail contact due to |left-right| noise level difference (dBA) shows a significant effect of squeal noise were more likely.

In this paper, optical noise is reduced using a differential detector in an 1.3$\mu$m optical wireless system which is more safe for human eye than 0.8$\mu$m optical wireless systems. The differential detector is composed of a InGaAs photodiode and a Si photodiode. This is a very simple and cost effective method to reduce the noise interference from incandescent lamps.

High-speed trains with maximum speed of 300km/h, named KTX, have started revenue services since April 2004. Because of the geographical features of Korea a large portion of the 'Kyung-Bu' line is comprised of tunnels, which may cause excessive noise in a vehicle. The KTX interior noise follows in tunnel structure and the place where the quality appears different, the quality against hereupon from the commerce vehicle from the research which it sees it executes and comparison to analyze.
The RF-CBTC (Radio Frequency-Communication Based Train Control) System is a communication system in railroad systems. The communication method of RF-CBTC system is the wireless between the wayside device and on-board device. The wayside device collects its location and speed from each train and transmits the distance from the forwarding train to the speed-limit position to it. The on-board device controlling device controls the speed optimum for the train. In the case of the RF-CBTC system used in Korea, transmission frequency is 2.4 [GHz]. It is the range of ISM(Industrial Scientific and Medical equipment) band and transmission of voice and data is performed by CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) method. So noises are made in the AWGN (Additive White Gaussian Noise) and fading environment. Currently, the SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio) is about 20 [dB], so due to bit errors made by noises, transmission of reliable information to the train is not easy. Also, in the case that two tracks are put to a single direction, it is needed that two trains transmit reliable voice and data to a wayside device. But, by noises, it is not easy that just a train transmits reliable information. In this paper, we estimated the BER (Bit Error Rate) related to the SNR of voice and data transmission in the environment such as AWGN and fading from the RF-CBTC system using the CDMA method. Also, we supposed the SNR which is required to meet the BER standard for voice and data transmission. By increasing the processing gain that is a ratio of chip transmission to voice and data transmission, we made possible voice and data transmission from maximally two trains to a wayside device, and demonstrated it by using Matlab program.
This paper describes the plans of considering the environmental influences in the preliminary feasibility investigation of railroad work. Because the cost-benefit analysis method about the environmental costs by air pollution and traffic noise is mainly applied in preliminary feasibility investigation, not only the verification in the calculation method of these environmental costs but also the consideration in the environmental costs of the topographical damage and the ecosystem extinction by railroad work is needed. The environment-friendly plans in choosing the locations of the railroad route and station are also suggested, and they include (1) consideration of environment protection area, residential zone, and region with scenic beauty, (2) application of the existing railroad route and station, and (3) railroad route parallel to another traffic facility.

In this study, the vibration were measured to analyze the characteristics of propagating vibration on the railroad, the roadbed and the ground nearby railroad induced by traveling trains. About Fifty cases of passing trains were measured with different types and speed, changing the source of loading and the points of measurement. The measured signals were analyzed in time domain and frequency domain. As a result of analysis, sudden reduction of energy was shown in near part from vibration source and the contents of high frequency was reduced more rapidly as the distance was increased. The amplitude of vibration and the contents of frequency did not make big differences in spite of different types of train which is recently used in Korea.
