Urban maglev should have such characteristics as not only environmentally friendliness and excellent driving capability but also curve negotiation performance because its routes have many sharp curves. Due to normal mechanism of urban maglev its relative displacements of secondary spring are bigger than conventional railway vehicle and the centering force of levitation magnet is smaller than wheel-on-rail system. These features of maglev affect the curving negotiation and so the additional steering device is to be required on Urban maglev to improve the running performance at sharp curve of less than about R50m. Some developed urban maglev had the passive steering device which consists of mechanical linkage or hydraulic cylinder and closed-route piping. But it has drawback as complexity of layout of understructure of vehicle and functional limitation of passive mechanism regarding transient curve. These demerits could be solved by using active steering system. But it has a weak point that an active device should have actuators and additional inverter or hydraulic power source. In this paper, the semi-active steering system for urban maglev is to be introduced.
One of the characteristics of the Maglev Train is the prominent capability of upgoing. Maglev train with the aim of longitudinal slope 7/100 is under development by the Center for Urban Maglev Program in Korea. To realize these slope, vertical curves must be inserted before and after the slope. The inserted curve has the radius of 3,000m generally. The insertion of these vertical curve results in the additional differences between the girder upper face and the guide rail, and the alignments are controlled by cast in place concrete at present. In this study, for longitudinal curved route with longitudinal slope 6/100, the applicability of PSC-U type girder and precast deck was evaluated for the span length 25m, 30m and vertical curve radii with 3,000m and 1,500m with respect to longitudinal slope 6/100.

Squeal noise is a harsh, high-pitched sound that occurs when railways are running at sharp curve tracks. The cause of squeal noise is known to be the transient lateral traction force between wheel and rail. Field measurements are too difficult to control the parameters. Thus, the scaled test rig should have been made in order to investigate the generating mechanism of squeal noise. The unique feature of our test rig, HSTR(Hongik Squeal Testing Rig), is that DOFs of its wheelset are as close to as those of the real railway. The attack angle and running speed of the rail roller are controlled in real time for simulating a transient characteristic of driving curve. The environment conditions, such as given axle load, running speed, and wheel's yaw angle have been identified for generating squeal noise and the squeal noise itself has been measured. The relation between wheel creepage and creep force in lateral direction and the criteria for squeal noise have been investigated, which results has been verified by finite element method.
Contact between wheel and rail leads to the creep phenomenon. Linear creep theory, assuming linear increase in the creep force vs creep, results in a critical speed at which the vibration of a railway vehicle goes to infinity. However, the actual creep force converges to a limited value, so that the vibration of a railway vehicle cannot increase indefinitely. In this study, the dynamics of a railway vehicle is investigated with a 6 DOF bogie model includingthe nonlinear creep curves of Vermeulen, Polach, and a newly calculated creep curve with strip theory. Strip theory considers the profiles of the wheel and rail. The results show that the vibration of a railway vehicle results in a limit-cycle over a specific running speed, and this limit-cycle becomes smaller as the slope of the creep-curve steepens. Moreover, a hunting phenomenon is caused due to flange contact, which restricts the magnitude of the limit-cycle.
Double Stack Train(DST) is being used variously around USA and Canada. The greatest advantage of the DST is mass transportation without extending the length of freight train and number of cars. So the DST system can be a kind of innovative train to increase the competitiveness of rail logistic business. As the domestic rail logistic increase, for enhancement of environment friendly green transportation amount, the DST needs more for efficiency. In this study, as the alternative way to introduce the DST to the Kyungbu Line, it's investigated the extensibility of rail freight with the relation of rail fare discount and examined the necessity of pilot business to the Kyungjeon Line which was expected comparatively lower cost. If the DST system is introduced to the Kyungjeon Line, the cost of mass transportation can be much lower and then the comparativeness of rail transportation will be increased, therefore logistic companies can have some margin additionally. In the result of survey to the related companies, if rail transportation fare is 37.7 % cheaper than current road transportation fare, the modal shift can be transferred by maximum 100%.

The main scope of this paper is to see if the conventional pump can be properly used for a specific fuel, Di-methyl Ether (DME) despite of its low lubricity and high reactivity in the experimental conditions. A wobble plate type fuel pump was connected to the common rail to verify that the pump could deliver the fuel at the required pressure and resultantly DME could be used as fuel without modifying the original pump. At each required pressure (30 Mpa, 35 Mpa, 40 Mpa, 45 Mpa, and 50 Mpa), the pump met the pressure required by the common rail. In addition, pump performance experiments tended to follow the usual performance curve while the flow rate decreased as the pressure increased. The maximum flow rate of the pump was 470 kg/h at 30 Mpa and all measurements were taken with keeping DME temperature below 60℃.
Stainless steel sheets are widely used as the structure material for the railroad cars and the commercial vehicles. These kinds structures used stainless steel sheets are commonly fabricated by using the gas welding. Gas welding is very important and useful technology in fabrication of a railroad car and vehicles structure. However fatigue strength of the gas welded joints is considerably lower than parent metal due to stress concentration at the weld, fatigue strength evaluation of gas welded joints are very important to evaluate the reliability and durability of railroad cars and to establish a criterion of long life fatigue design. In this paper, $({\Delta}{\sigma}_a)_R-N_f$ curve were obtained by fatigue tests. Using these results, the accelerated life test(ALT) was conducted. From the experimental results, an acceleration model was derived and acceleration factors are estimated. So it is intended to obtain the useful information for the fatigue lifetime of plug and ring gas welded joints and data analysis by statistic reliability method, to save time and cost, and to develop optimum accelerated life prediction plans.
Running safety and ride comfort of high speed railway largely depend on the track geometry that is dependent on the bridge deformation. This study presents a theoretical study on mapping the bridge vertical deformations to the change of track geometry. Analytical formulae are derived through the theoretical analysis to quantify the track geometry change, and validated against the finite element analysis and experimental data. Based on the theoretical formulae, parametric studies are conducted to evaluate the effects of key parameters on the track geometry of a high speed railway. The results show that the derived formulae provide reasonable prediction of the track geometry change under various bridge vertical deformations. The rail deflection increases with the magnitude of bridge pier settlement and vertical girder fault. Increasing the stiffness of the fasteners or mortar layer tends to cause a steep rail deformation curve, which is undesired for the running safety and ride comfort of high-speed railway.
Rail transit lines usually pass through many complicated topographies in mountain areas. The influence of inclined bedrock on the train-induced soil vibration response was investigated. Model tests were conducted to comparatively analyze the vibration attenuation under inclined bedrock and horizontal bedrock conditions. A three-dimension numerical model was built to make parameter analysis. The results show that under the horizontal bedrock condition, the peak velocity in different directions was almost the same, while it obviously changed under the inclined bedrock condition. Further, the peak velocity under inclined bedrock condition had a larger value. The peak velocity first increased and then decreased with depth, and the trend of the curve of vibration attenuation with depth presented as a quadratic parabola. The terrain conditions had a significant influence on the vibration responses, and the inclined soil surface mainly affected the shallow soil. The influence of the dip angle of bedrock on the peak velocity and vibration attenuation was related to the directions of the ground surface. As the soil thickness increased, the peak velocity decreased, and as it reached 173% of the embedded pile length, the influence of the inclined bedrock could be neglected.

The effects of braking of trains and roughness of rails on the dynamic behavior of bridges are studied. The train-bridge interaction is considered by solving Lagrange's equation of motions. Newmark's direct integration is used to solve the governing equations. Dynamic train loads acting on piers at each time step are evaluated, and the wheel-rail roughness effect is considered by using the PSD curve of the rail. The model of braking forces in bridge section is based on the change of deceleration mentioned in ASTM(American Society for Testing and Materials) E503-82. Only skidding frictions without considering rolling frictions are modeled, and the friction coefficient of 0.25 is assumed. Parametric studies in a simply supported PC Box girder bridge are carried out to verify the present method and to analyze the effects of train speed, wheel-rail roughness, braking forces on dynamic train loads.
