A complete theoretical treatment of the photothermal displacement technique has been performed for thermal diffusivity measurement in solid materials. The influence of parameters - radius and modulation frequency of pump beam and thickness of material - on the phase lag was studied. The phase decreases up to a certain position, then starts to increase and does have an asymptotic value. The position, where phase has the minimum value, is a function of thermal diffusion length thickness of sample, and radius of pump beam. A new method based on minimum phase lag is described to determine the thermal diffusivity of solid material.
Liquid breakup under the variation of AC frequency has been studied experimentally in the electrohydrodynamic atomization. The effect of parameters such as charging voltage, flow rate, nozzle tip inner diameter and power frequency have been considered. This work was performed to investigate the experimental analysis for the effect of AC frequency on breakup process, the mapping of occurrence of disintegration region, and the relationship between the applied power and the droplet radius. The experimental results show that the increase of applied voltage in a certain frequency band leads to a reduction in the droplet size within the limits from 50Hz to 400Hz. The transition phenomena from dripping mode to spindle mode were observed under the band of sudden fall of droplet radius changing ratio, and the synchronous region were produced within the range of applied voltage from 5kV to 6kV.
In the present study, free vibration analysis of thick annular plates is analyzed by discrete singular convolution method. The Mindlin plate theory is employed. The material is isotropic, homogeneous and obeys Hook's law. In this paper, discrete singular convolution method is used for discretization of equations of motion. Axisymmetric frequency values are presented illustrating the effect of radius ratio and thickness to radius ratio of the annular plate. The influence of boundary conditions on the frequency characteristics is also discussed. Comparing results with those in the literature validates the present analysis. It is shown that the obtained results are very accurate by this approach.

The purpose of this investigation is experimentally to clarify the machinability and optimum tool geometry on milling of hardened STD11 steel. In the finish process office milling of high hardened STD11 steel by CBN tool, the optimum tool shape is suggested, which can minimize the tool fracture and chipping by impact. It is measured that cutting farce, tool wear and surface roughness generated during single-insert face milling using various geometric CBN tools. It has been found that the optimal chamfer angle of CBN tool is about -$25^{\circ}C$ and the suitable chandler width is 0.2mm. The nose radius of tool is the most excellent at 1.2mm in the viewpoint of tool wear and surface roughness.

The structure of turbulence of fully developed flow through three concentric annuli with both rough inner and outer walls was investigated experimentally for Reynolds number range Re=15000-93000. Turbulence intensities were measured in three (u, v, w) directions, and turbulence shear stresses in annuli of radius ratios .alpha.= 0.26, 0.4 and 0.56, respectively. The result showed that the structure of turbulence for these asymmetric flows was not the same as that for the annulus with smooth walls. The velocity fluctuations of all three components (u, v, and w-directions) showed little discernible variation with Reynolds numbers, but became apparent with the influence of radius ratio (.alpha.) The experimental results for an annulus with the roughened outer wall and a smooth annulus were shown in the figures as a reference. The eddy diffusivities and friction factors were also presented and discussed.
This paper considers the buckling and post-buckling behavior of empty metal storage tanks under wind load. The structures of such tanks may be idealized as cantilever cylindrical shells, and the structural response is investigated using a computational model. The modeling employs a doubly curved finite element based on a theory by Simo and coworkers, which is capable of handling large displacements and plasticity. Buckling results for tanks with four different geometric relations are presented to consider the influence of the ratios between the radius and the height of the shell (R/L), and between the radius and the thickness (R/t). The studies aim to clarify the differences in the shells regarding their imperfection-sensitivity. The results show that thin-walled short tanks, with R/L = 3, display high imperfection sensitivity, while tanks with R/L = 0.5 are almost insensitive to imperfections. Changes in the total potential energy of tanks that would buckle under the same high wind pressures are also considered.

This paper describes the structural safety of solid fuel in the Hybrid Rocket Motor (HRM). Hybrid rocket combustion has the distinct regression characteristics which include the process of thermal pyrolysis and fuel vaporization. Most of all, this regression characteristics would structurally affect the strength of the fuel having a multi-port configuration, and even may cause the breaking from the fuel grain. This problem would probably influence the performance and operating safety of HRM. Therefore, for the safe operation of HRM, the critical port radius which determines the structurally safe region was discussed from the heat analysis of the solid fuel.
Understanding the contact between wheel and rail is a starting point in railway vehicle dynamic research area and especially analysis for the contact geometry between wheel and rail is important. On the one hand, the critical speed as the natural characteristics of rolling-stock is generally tested on the roller rig. The geometrical characteristics of the wheel/roller contact on the roller rig are different from these of the general wheel/rail contact because the longitudinal radius of roller is not infinite compared with rail. Thus, in this paper we developed the algorithm to analyze the wheel/roller contact geometry of our roller rig which is constructed now and analyzed the difference between whee/roller contact and wheel/rail contact. In conclusion, we found that the yaw motion of wheelset and the roller radius influence the geometrical contact parameters in wheel flange contact area.
In this study, to analyze the shaped drawing process from round bar, the practical conical die with considering die radius and bearing was defined by a mathematical expression, and also a simple technique for initial mesh generation to the shaped drawing process was proposed. The drawing of rectangular section from round bar, one of the shaped drawing process, has been simulated by using non-steady state 3D rigid plastic finite element method in order to evaluate the influence of semi-die angle and reduction in area to corner filling. Other process variables such as friction constant, rectangular ratio, die radius and bearing length were fixed during the simulation. An artificial neural network has been introduced to obtain the optimal process conditions which gave rise to a fast simulation.
Lens centration was the fitting variable that was most dependent on base curve radius. Flatter lenses tended to decenter more. A flatter contact lens will likely have to move into the periphery to reach this point of stability. In most cases, the decentration was in the superior and/or temporal direction. It was also found that comfort complains were more common with flatter lenses. The optimal fits was highest with the 8.4mm base curve lens for all three ranges fit eyes decreased as base curve radius was increased. These lenses with steeper radii lead to better centration and therefore to better fit and comfort for more patients than do thin lenses with flatter radii.
