In order to find out the Radioprotective effect of algin-oligosaccharide(AOS), this study, with a mouse of which whole frame irradiated by 3 Gy radiation once, measured caspase-3 and caspase-9 amid cell signaling connected to apoptosis in order to observe cell activation. In Caspase-3 and Caspase-9 test for observing cell activation, both of Caspase-3 and Caspase-9 showed highly increased O.D. value in the irradiation control group, while the whole groups treated with algin-oligosaccharide before or after irradiation indicated lower O.D. value than the irradiation control group, especially showed big difference in 7 day's treatment group of before irradiation (P<0.001). It confirmed that Caspase generation was restrained in AOS treatment group. Consequently, this study inquired into the fact that algin-oligosaccharide with superior antioxidant activity performed radiation protection by inducing restraint of Caspase generation and confirmed that natural product with less chemical toxicity was able to be applied as radioprotector.
Since the last ICRP recommendations on radiological protection was published in 1966 as it's Publication 9, the revised edition of the recommendations had first been published in 1977, accommodating up-to-date knowledge of radiobiology and operational experiences of radiation protection built up for over a decade. In this article, the new version of the recommendations is reviewed in comparison with those of the Publication 9, while the corrections and modifications made afterward are introduced together with the recent trends and responses of the experts in various countries for the practical adoption or legislation of the recommendations.
Intervention levels for protection of the public in a radiological emergency are theoretically derived by the cost-benefit approach with the concept of justification and optimization. Intervention levels on the sheltering, evacuation, temporary relocation and permanent resettlement for protection of the public are estimated with the cost to protective countermeasures and the value from dose averted which are the site specific parameters. As a result, it is confirmed that IAEA guidelines for intervention levels are applicable to the radiological emergency in Korea. Optimum ranges of 5 - 10 mSv/2days for sheltering, 25 - 130 mSv/week for evacuation, 15 - 90 mSv/month lot temporary relocation and 600 - 3,500 mSv/lifetime for permanent resettlement for intervention levels are also provided. The result can be applied as useful data to update intervention levels under the theoretical background in Korea.
Radiation exposure is on the rise as the working hours of radiation workers increase. Accordingly, the importance of protection products for decreasing the dose of exposure has risen, and excellent X-ray shielding ability and light weight are required. The purpose of this study is to compare the Pb which use currently and other elements in order to reduce the exposure of workers to the most effective protection products. For experiment, we used the general X-ray equipment and angiography equipment, and obtained the Pb and apron's shielding rate. When the shielding rate of Pb and apron was compared in general X-ray equipment, the shielding rate was 95.1% for Pb 0.5 mm, 96.1% for apron 0.5 mmPb and 95.6% for Bi+W 0.5 mmPb. When compared the shielding rate of each aprons in angiography equipment, 0.5 mmPb apron was the highest as 96.4% and Bi+W 0.25 mmPb apron was the lowest as 90.2% at the 50 cm distance. The shielding rate of 0.5 mmPb apron was the highest as 95.7% and Bi+W 0.25 mmPb apron was the lowest as 85.9% at the 100 cm distance. As a result of evaluating the apron efficiency through this study, 0.5 mmPb apron showed the best shielding rate, but it was the heaviest apron. 0.35 mmPb apron and Bi+W 0.25 mmPb apron weighed light but had low shielding rate. Through the results of this experiment, it is recommended that radiation workers reduce radiation exposure by using more efficient protection products.
This study aims to introduce a prescriptive methodology to comprehensively support the analysis of decision process by the use of Saaty's Analytical Hierarchy Process for the optimization of radiation protection. The analytical Hierarchy Process for the optimization of radiation protection. The analytical process for the problem of selecting options among given protection alternatives is illustrated with the data of the uranium mine example in ICRP Publ. 55. This technique, unlike other conventional selection method, is considered to provide a useful tool for the protection manager with respect to its ease of use and simplification in the choice of optimal alternative associated with radiological protection.
This study was conducted to investigate the radiation protection, awareness, and attitude of radiological technologists in the mammography room due to the low energy use of breast imaging. Data collection was performed by 222 independent radiological technologists in the breast and breast clinic of six hospitals except Jeju Island. The independent sample t-test and oneway variance analysis were performed. As a result, it was found that the lower the number of men(p<0.05), the age of 30s(p<0.05), the marriage(p<0.05), the work experience of more than 10 years(p<0.05), the working hours of 8 hours(p<0.01), the less the impact of radiation(p<0.01), the more important it was to radiation defense. appear. This is thought to be influenced by the work specificity and work environment of the mammography room, and it will be used as a basic data to raise awareness and act on the exposure through analysis with other factors.
Background: Food consumption is one of the most important routes for radionuclide intake for the public; therefore, there is the need to have a comprehensive understanding of the amount of radioactivity in food products. Consumption of radionuclide-contaminated food could increase potential health risks associated with exposure to radiation such as cancers. The present study aims to determine radioactivity levels in some food products (milk, rice, sugar, and wheat flour) consumed in Mali and to evaluate the radiological effect on the public health from these radionuclides. Materials and Methods: The health impact due to ingestion of radionuclides from these foods was evaluated by the determination of activity concentration of radionuclides 238U, 232Th, 40K, and 137Cs using gamma spectrometry system with high-purity germanium detector and radiological hazards index in 16 samples collected in some markets, mall, and shops of Bamako-Mali. Results and Discussion: The average activity concentrations were 9.8±0.6 Bq/kg for 238U, 8.7±0.5 Bq/kg for 232Th, 162.9±7.9 Bq/kg for 40K, and 0.0035±0.0005 Bq/kg for 137Cs. The mean values of radiological hazard parameters such as annual committed effective dose, internal hazard index, and risk assessment from this work were within the dose criteria limits given by international organizations (International Commission on Radiological Protection and United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation) and national standards. Conclusion: The results show low public exposure to radioactivity and associated radiological impact on public health. Nevertheless, this study stipulates vital data for future research and regulatory authorities in Mali.
