  • RFID tag is detected by an RFID antenna and information is read from the tag detected, by an RFID reader. RFID tag detection by an RFID reader is very important at the deployment stage. Tag detection is influenced by factors such as tag direction on a target object, speed of a conveyer moving the object, and the contents of an object. The water content of the object absorbs radio waves at high frequencies, typically approximately 900 MHz, resulting in unstable tag signal power. Currently, finding the best conditions for factors influencing the tag detection requires very time consuming work at deployment. Thus, a quick and simple RFID tag detection scheme is needed to improve the current time consuming trial-and-error experimental method. This paper proposes a back-propagation learning-based RFID tag detection prediction scheme, which is intelligent and has the advantages of ease of use and time/cost savings. The results of simulation with the proposed scheme demonstrate a high prediction accuracy for tag detection on a water content, which is comparable with the current method in terms of time/cost savings.

  • Indium doped zinc oxide films (ZIO) were deposited on non-alkali glass substrates by radio frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering at room temperature. The structural, electrical and optical properties of the ZIO films were investigated as a function of their $In_2O_3$ content (3.33-15.22 wt%). The ZIO films deposited with an $In_2O_3$ content of 9.54 wt% showed a relatively low resistivity of $9.13{\times}10^{-4}{\Omega}cm$ and a highly c-axis preferred orientation. The grain size and FWHM were mainly affected by the $In_2O_3$ content. The crystallinity and resistivity were enhanced with increasing grain size. The average transmittance of the ZIO films was over 85% in the visible region and their band gap varied from 3.22 to 3.66 eV depending on their doping ratio.

  • In this study, the microwave free-space transmission technique was used to measure the dielectric property of powdered food at microwave frequencies. The sample holder was designed and fabricated to transmit the microwave signals ranging from 1 to 15GHz. From the microwave propagation theory the equation expressing the dielectric property of powdered food was derived and validated by standard dielectrics. The dielectric property of powdered food such as wheat flour, coffee powder and milk powder was measured and analyzed. In the uniform range of bulk density of material, the real parts of permittivity of the food samples increased with the increase of moisture content, bulk density and temperature of the samples. The propagation properties such as attenuation and phase shift increased linearly as the moisture density of the food samples increased. As a measuring frequency of the moisture content, the X-band was recommended.

  • This study investigated the effects of thawing conditions on physiological activities and quality of peeled garlic. Peeled frozen garlic was analyzed after thawing at low temperature ($4^{\circ}C$), room temperature ($20^{\circ}C$), tap water ($20^{\circ}C$), radio frequency of 27.12 MHz, and 2.45 GHz in a microwave. As a result, the time required to thaw garlic to $0^{\circ}C$ by various thawing methods was shortest at2.45 GHz in a microwave, followed by $20^{\circ}C$ tap water, radio frequency of 27.12 MHz, $20^{\circ}C$, and $4^{\circ}C$. Microwave thawing was faster than other methods, but it resulted in significant non-uniformity of heating. The hardness of peeled garlic significantly decreased upon freeze-thawing, whereas it showed improved hardness upon radio-frequency thawing. Total color difference in garlic increased upon freeze-thawing, and it was not improved by various thawing methods. Antioxidant activities were determined for DPPH radical scavenging ability, SOD-like activity, and reducing power. Total phenolic compounds and flavonoids in garlic extract were measured as $3.222{\pm}0.214{\mu}g$ GAE/g and $0.149{\pm}0.03{\mu}g$ QE/g, respectively. The content of total phenolic compounds was significantly reduced by 2.45 GHz microwave thawing ($1.90{\pm}0.02{\mu}g$ GAE/g); however, flavonoid contents were slightly reduced under freezing and thawing conditions. The DPPH radical scavenging ability of garlic extracts was not affected by thawing methods; however, SOD-like activity and reducing power were slightly reduced by freeze-thawing. These results indicate that physiological activities were not improved by radio-frequency thawing; however, thawing time and maintain hardness were reduced compared with conventional thawing methods.

  • With the rapid growth of video data service, demand to provide advertisements or additional information with regard to a particular video scene is increasing. However, the direct use of automated visual analysis or speech recognition on videos virtually has limitations with current level of technology; the metadata of video such as title, category information, or summary does not reflect the content of continuously changing scenes. This work presents a new video contextual advertising system that serves relevant advertisements on a given scene by leveraging the scene's situation information inferred from video scripts. Experimental results show that the use of situation information extracted from scripts leads to better performance and display of more relevant advertisements to the user.

  • The backscattering coefficients of a bare soil surface were measured using an R-band polarimetric scatterometer, which were used to verify the validities of scattering models and inversion algorithms. The soil moisture contents and the surface roughness parameters (the RMS height and correlation length) were also measured from the soil surface. The backscattering coefficients were obtained from several scattering models with these surface parameters, and the computation results were compared with the measured backscattering coefficients. The soil moisture contents of the surface were retrieved from the measured backscattering coefficients, and compared with the measured surface parameters. This paper shows how well the scattering models agree with the measurements, and also shows the inversion results.

  • The effects of five colored soybean (blue, red, yellow, white, and black) varieties on the quality characteristics of soybean paste (Doenjang) were investigated for proximate composition, salt content, pH, color, organic acid content, amino acid content, and mineral content after 80 days of aging. Soybean paste (Doenjang) samples were divided into TDS (traditional Doenjang prepared with soybean) and TDM (traditional Doenjang prepared with mixed soybeans, kidney bean, black soybean, kind of small bean, sword bean, green bean, red bean, at a radio of 1:1:1:1:1(w/w)). Moisture content was 49.66% for TDM and 49.52% for TDM. Protein and salt contents of the TDS sample were higher than those of TDM. The "L" values of the TDB sample increased the aging period was decreased. In contrast, the "L" and "$\alpha$" values of TDM did not show any significant differences. The main organic acids detected were malic acid > lactic acid > tartaric acid in the TDS and TDM samples. Glutamic acid contents were 2.83 g/100 g for the TDS sample and 2.15 g/100 g for the TDM. The levels of K, Mg, and Ca of the TDS sample were higher than those of TDM. No significant difference occurred between TDS and TDM regarding their quality characteristics after 80 days of aging. Further studies needed include sensory evaluation and functionality of soybean paste made from mixed soybean materials.

  • Ti-Si-N films obtained by using RF reactive sputtering of targets with various Ti/Si ratios in a $N_2(Ar+N_2)$ gas mixture have been investigated in terms of films resistivity and diffusion barrier performance. The chemical bonding state of Si in the Ti-Si-N film which contained a higher Si content was in the form of amorphous $Si_3N_4$, producing increased film resistivity with increased $N_2$flow rate. Lowering the Si content in the deposited Ti-Si-N film favored the formation of crystalline TiN even at low $N_2$flow rates, and leads to low film resistivity. In addition increasing the N content led to Ti-Si-N films having a higher density and compressive stress, suggesting that the N content in the films appear to be one of the most important factors affecting the diffusion barrier characteristics. Consequently, we proposed the optimum composition in the range of 29~49 at.% of Ti, 6~20 at.% of Si, and 45~55 at.% of N for the Ti-Si-N films having both low resistivity and excellent diffusion barrier performance.

  • As the number of mobile devices such as smart phones and tablets explodes, the need for new services or applications is also rapidly increasing. Smart class application is one of the emerging applications, in which most of contents are distributed to all members of a class simultaneously. It is highly required to select relay nodes to cover shadow area of radio as well as extend coverage, but existing algorithms in a smart class environment suffer from high control packet overhead and delay for exchanging topology information among all pairs of nodes to select relay nodes. In addition, the relay selection procedure should be repeated in order to adapt to the dynamic topology changes caused by link status changes or device's movement. This paper proposes the learning based relay selection algorithm to overcome aforementioned problems. The key idea is that every node keeps track of its relay quality in a fully distributed manner, where RQI (Relay Quality Indicator) is newly defined to measure both the ability of receiving packets from content source and the ability of successfully relaying them to successors. The RQI of each node is updated whenever it receives or relays broadcast packet, and the node having the higher RQI is selected as a relay node in a distributed and run-time manner. Thus, the proposed algorithm not only removes the overhead for obtaining prior knowledge to select relay nodes, but also provides the adaptability to the dynamic topology changes. The network simulation and experimental results prove that the proposed algorithm provides efficient and reliable content distribution to all members in a smart class as well adaptability against network dynamics.

  • Timbers of 14 by 14 cm, 2.4 m long, were dried in a vacuum kiln to investigate vacuum drying characteristics using three types of heating methods, conduction heating with hot plate, the radio frequency (RF) heating and the combination of both (hybrid heating). Average drying rate is the highest for the hybrid heating and the lowest for the RF heating. Average specific energy is the highest for the RF heating and the lowest for conduction heating. Transverse moisture content distribution of dried timber revealed the convex profile for both conduction and the hybrid heating and moisture content increased from one face to the opposite face for the RF heating. Moisture content distribution along the length of timber increased from the end to the middle of timber length for conduction and the hybrid heating and decreased from the end to the middle of timber length for the RF heating. End- and surface checks for conduction heating were severer than the other heating methods. No internal check occurred in any heating methods. Drying characteristics of conduction heating showed in-between trend of the RF and the hybrid heating.
