In order to evaluate the effect of seed weight on different aspect of safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) seed germination and growth characteristics. Quantity of sinapine leaked from seed was greater as the viability of seeds was dropped by the time elapsed of seed aging model and long storage condition in safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.). The cultivar of safflower was Jin-Sun and the seeds that are separated to three different weights of small, middle, and large were used in this experiment. Large seeds revealed the highest germination percent, coleoptiles fresh weight, coleoptiles dry weight, radicle fresh weight and 1000 seed weights than other seed weight. Seed weight had little effect on yield while seed number exerted a positive influence. Interestingly, yield per plant and its major components, number of capsules and capsule weights, revealed a negligible relationship with oil content.
Cotyledonary somatic embryos after being cultured in a liquid MS medium for 1 week were subcultured on a solid MS medium and then the embryos germinated at a rate of 92%, but the rate was lowered by extending the culture period of the embryos on a liquid medium: 26% germination on a liquid medium culture for 4 weeks. Somatic embryos subcultured on the liquid medium showed the normal elongation of hypocotyl and radicle but in part showed secondary embryogenesis on hypocotyl and callus formation on and around the root-hypocotyl juncture. Through observation of scanning electron microscope, apical meristem in plumule showed the loose arrangement of cells, and abnormal leaf primordium formation and growth arrest of the primordium or no leaf primordium formation. Therefore, it is suggested that the germination arrest of carrot somatic embryos on liquid medium culture is due to the structural abnormality of the apical meristem in plumule.
Treatment duration of 12 pepper species by 3, 5, 7 days examined result, optimum processor of 12 pepper cultivars and carrier : water proportion was difference in species. However, radicle protrusion during priming(RPDP) does not happened and heightens germination rate, and Wang and Manitta species were 1:3(ratio), 7 day by treated that can shorten $T_{50}$, and all of the 10 cultivars were regard to processing of 1:7(ratio), 3 days was make satisfactory progress. Also cultivars of Jongggip was investigated by cultivars which germination rate and $T_{50}$ according to treatment duration and water proportion was irregular tendency than other cultivars. It was suggested that $20^{\circ}C$ was stable to radical protrusion and improved germination, while from $15^{\circ}C$ to $35^{\circ}C$ examined.
Crude extract of Coptis japonica root-stem was evaluated for antifungal activity against Phytophthora capsici, Fusarium oxysporum, Colletotrichum dematium, Colletotrichum truncatum, Botrytis cinerea, Botryosphaeria dothidea and Alternaria porri, and antifungal active compound from the extract was identified. In addition, the usefulness of the extract for some plants disease control was investigated. Crude extract of C. japonica root-stem exhibited antifungal activity against P. capsici, F. oxysporum, C. dematium, B. cinerea, B. dothidea and A. porri. Antifungal activity of the substance isolated from C. japonica root-stem was similar to a standard chemical berberine-Cl. Red-pepper fruit rot, sesame stem rot and welsh-onion alternaria leaf spot were effectively controlled by the crude extract of C. japonica root-stem. Phytotoxicity was not observed in the red-pepper and welsh-onion leaves and red-pepper and strawberry fruits with exogenous foliage application of the crude extract. Seeds germination and radicle growth of red-pepper and sesame were inhibited by the crude extract of C. japonica root-stem. 4.24g of yellowish compound per 100g of C. japonica root-stem was obtained. The compound was identified as berberine-Cl by HPLC.

The ultrastructural changes of embryo and endosperm cells were observed during the green fruit with embryo about $250{\mu}$ long to germination. 1. In the embryo cells of green fruit with embryo about $250{\mu}$ long, mitochondrial cristae and plastid are undifferentiated and dictyosome are occasionally observed. There are electron-opaque globoids in the vacuole and a lot of spherosomes in the outer layer of smooth endoplasmic reticulum. Endosperm is filled with spherosomes and electron-opaque protein bodies surrounded by spherosomes, and due to these, other organelle are not observed. 2. In the embryo cells of seeds with red seed coat, mitochondrial cristae are well developed, electron-opaque globoids increased, and vacuoles are enlarged. In the endosperm, however, spherosomes increased, protein bodies are enlarged, and electron-opaque globoidal crystals are dispersed within them. 3. In the procambium and epicotyl cells of dehiscent seed, Golgi vacuoles and vesicles are well developed, and mitochondrial cristae are also well differentiated. Spherosomes are numerously present and radicle cells, peripheral cells of hypocotyl, and vacuoles of cotyledon are well differentiated. Endosperm is filled with spherosomes containing electron-opaque granules and protein bodies are surrounded by a single membrane. There are acid phosphatase around globoids and spherosomes. 4. At the time of seeding, spherosomes markedly increased in the outer layer of cotyledon and protein bodies are also observed. Cell organelles are differentiated and plastids containing starch are also present. 5. In the outer $2{\sim}3$ layers of cotyledons, radicle cells, and peripheral cells of hypocotyl during post-seeding to germination, spherosomes and plastids with starch increased, and mitochondria and microbodies are also found around the nucleus of embryo cells. With approaching, the germination stage, in the endosperm contacting with embryo, vacuoles are well differentiated but spherosomes decreased. There increased electron-opaque materials within vacuoles. In other endosperm, with the decrease of spherosome, mitochondria increased and electro n-opaque globular bodies are formed and gradually increased. The outer layer of protein bodies are reduced while electron-transparent portions are enlarged and fused together to occupy the outer layer where small particles are formed. 6. In the endosperm of germination stage, spherosomes decreased while protein bodies, are fused together to form 2 or 3 within a cell.
Several species of the genus Aphidius are used in biological control programs against aphid pests throughout the world and their behavior and physiology are well studied. While the importance of sensory organs in their behavior is understood, their antennal structure remains largely unknown. In this study, the external morphology and distribution of the antennal sensilla on the antennal of both female and male adults of A. colemani were described using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Generally, the filiform antennae of males ($l,515.2{\pm}116.5\;{\mu}m$) are longer than females ($l,275.1{\pm}103.4\;{\mu}m$). Antennae of this species are made up of radicle, scape, pedicel and flagellomeres. Male and female antennae differed in the total number of flagellomeres as 15 in males and 13 in females. The result of SEM observation was characterization and grouping of seven types of receptors into morphological classcs: Bohm bristles, Sensilla placodea, 2 types of S. coeloconica and S. trichodea, and S. basiconica as with a tip pore and with wall pores. In addition, the possible functions of the above sensilla types arc discussed in light of previously published literature; mechanoreception (Bohm bristles, S, coeloconica I & II and S. trichodea) and chemoreception (S. placodea, S. basiconica type I & II).
This study was conducted to investigate the germination and proteome profile characteristics of wheat seeds treated under various concentrations of abscisic acid (ABA). After-ripening, the seeds of three wheat cultivars (Baegjoong, Keumkang, and Uri) showing different levels of dormancy were used. Germination index and germination rate of the cultivars was higher than 0.95% and 98%, respectively, and these were not significantly different under 0, 10, 30, and $50{\mu}M$ ABA at 7 d after germination. However, the growth of the shoot and radicle was significantly inhibited at 10, 30, and $50{\mu}M$ ABA compared to that at $0{\mu}M$ ABA. Mean ABA content of the embryos of seeds germinated at 0 and $50{\mu}M$ ABA for 7 d was 0.8 and $269.0ngmg^{-1}DW$, respectively. Proteins extracted from embryos germinated for 4 d were analyzed by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis, and proteins showing a difference of 1.5-fold or greater in their spot volume relative to that of $0{\mu}M$ ABA were identified. The expression of four protein spots increased at $50{\mu}M$ ABA and two protein spots were detected only at $50{\mu}M$ ABA; these six proteins were all identified as globulin types. Conversely, the expression of three protein spots decreased at $50{\mu}M$ ABA and were identified as cytosolic glutamine sysnthetase, isocitrate dehydrogenase, and S-adenosylmethionine synthetase 2. In conclusion, ABA did not inhibit the germination rate regardless of pre-harvest sprouting characteristics of the cultivars. However, the growth of the shoot and radicle was significantly inhibited by ABA, most likely through the down regulation of glutamine, methyl group donor, and polyamines biosynthesis, among others, while accompanied by globulin accumulation in the embryos.
A novel quinolineoxadiazoles, substituted the carboxylic acid group with 1,2,4-oxadiazole radicle, of KSC-16960 and related compounds were evaluated to examine the herbicidal activity, crop injury and residual effect of after-vegetable crops compared with those of quinclorac (3,7-dichloro-8-quinolinecarboxylic acid), of which use is now banned because of its residual activity to some succeeding vegetable crops. KSC-16960 showed 2- and 3-leaf stages of barnyardgrasses effectively controlled by more than 95 and 90%, respectively, at a rate of 6.25 g/ha. The dose of KSC-16960 controlled 4- and 5-leaf stages of barnyardgrasses by more than 90% were found to be 50 g and 100 g/ha, respectively. The selectivity of KSC-16960 between direct-seeded rice and barnyardgrass was approximately 2-fold higher than that of quinclorac when they were treated to the soil. The selectivity indices of KSC-16960 and of quinclorac between 1-leaf stage of direct seeded rice and 5-leaf stage of barnyardgrass were 44 and 23, respectively, and those between 1-leaf stage of direct seeded rice and 4-leaf stage of barnyardgrass were almost 2-fold higher. Application of KSC-16960 with bentazone exhibited an additive controlling effect on several weed species, but that of quinclorac exhibited an antagonistic effect. With pyrazosulfuron-ethyl, on the other hand, both application of KSC-16960 and quinclorac showed additive interactions. Under a greenhouse condition, the residual activity of KSC-16960 to succeeding tomato plants was approximately 4-fold lower compared to that of quinclorac. KSC-16960 could be substituted for quinclorac, if it will be made some more improvement for reducing residual activity.
To improve germinability of carrot seeds of 'Inari', 'Mansan', 'Mussang', and 'Hongsim' cultivars, various levels of solid matrix priming (SMP) and the physiological changes of seeds associated with SMP were examined. As the ratio of water in a seed-Micro Cel E-water mix and priming duration increased, seed germinability enhanced. However, there was radicle protrusion during SMP in some cultivars, indicating the existence of cultivar different variations of the optimum conditions. The optimum ratio for a seed-Micro Cel E-water mix was 5 : 3 : 10.5. In this mix, the optimum durations for the treatment were 3 days for 'Mansan' and 5 days for other cultivars. SMP at $20^{\circ}C$ to $25^{\circ}C$ resulted in a higher germination percentage and a shorter $T_{50}$. Seeds absorbed water quickly within an hour and the percentage of moisture was stable at 43 to 49 after 24 hours of the treatment. Conductivity of the mix declined for the first 6 hours to $100{\mu}S{\cdot}cm^{-1}$ with little changes thereafter. On the other hand, the pH of the mixed increased slightly during the early phase, and then returned to the initial level as the treatment proceeded.
The skarn type tungsten deposits in Jechon area are developed in the contact aureole of Jurassic granodiorite and lower Paleozoic limestone beds. The Tong Myeong mine contains scheelitebearing skarns found at and near the contacts between crystalline limestone and hornfels. Although the skarns are heterogeneous, there are clear patterns in the preferred associations and nonassociations of minerals on all scales. The skarn show a zonal arrangement from limestone to hydrothermal vein as follow: wollastonite skarn, clinopyroxene skarn, clinopyroxene-garnet skarn, garnet skarn, and vesuvianite skarn. Scheelite, abundant in all skarn units except wollastonite skarn and also in quartz veins near orebodies, is everywhere strongly correlated with pyrrhotite. It is implied that it was a stable phase throughout the evolution of the zoned skarns, at least in pyrrhotite.forming environments. Deposition of scheelite was probably widely caused by increasing $a_{Ca^{2+}}$ in the fluid, resulting from associated and interrelated reactions: $FeCl_2\;aq+H_2S\;aq{\rightarrow}FeS+2H^{+}+2Cl^-$; and $CaCO_3+2H^+{\rightarrow}Ca^{+2}+H_2CO_3$. The spectral reflection powers of nine sulfide species were studied, for three mineralization stage. The shapes and characteristics of the spectral reflectivity profiles are significant in their control of other optical properties. The characteristics of the Vickers microhardness and the optical symmetry for the minerals studied are discussed. Broad radicle groupings of the sulfides can be made with regard to the reflectivity-microhardness values.
