  • The intra-annual and interannual variations of total, high, middle, low clouds, and cloud forcing net solar radiation flux, cloud forcing net long-wave radiation flux, and SSTs over the tropical oceans are investigated with the use of ISCP D2, NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis for January 1983-December 1993. The intra-annual variation of total cloudiness is dominated by high and middle clouds in the western Pacific and central tropical oceans, the interannual variation of total cloudiness is also dominated by high and middle clouds in the central Pacific and Atlantic. The dominant intra-annual and interannual EOFs of total cloudiness have spatially coherent link with those SSTs. For the interannual EOFs, total cloudiness and SSTs are related to E1 nino-Southern Oscillation(ENSO). The second most important intra-annual EOFs of total cloudiness are related to Inter Tropical Convergence Zone(ITCZ). The third most important intra-annual EOFs show coherent relation in the western Pacific. The correlation analysis between cloud radiative effects and SSTs show spatially coherent relation over the tropical oceans even though cloud forcing cooling effect is much higher than heating effect.

  • In this study, numerical analysis was performed for 150kW arc heater and inflow around specimen was studied. Pressure, voltage, etc. were similar to experimental data, however efficiency was over estimated. In order to correct efficiency, swirl effect and modified radiative heat flux using configuration factor were considered. It was shown that Swirl had little effect on efficiency although radiative heat flux played an important role on decreasing the efficiency of arc heater. In addition, non-equilibrium analysis that plasma flows moves from an arc heater's nozzle to a specimen were performed.

  • Analysis method for the radiation heat transfer from the duct burner flame to the heat exchanger in a Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG) was presented to supplement the existing thermal design process. Flame on a burner and a heat exchanger were postulated as imaginary planes and flame temperature, surface and emissivity was simplified in a aspect of engineering approach. The calculated local flame radiative heat flux on the heating surface was compared with the heat flux of 3-atomic gas radiation and convection.

  • Mixed heat transfer in an indirected NIR (Near Infrared Ray) dry chamber was investigated numerical analysis. It is Important that the miked heat transfer effects on double parameters which the Reynolds number and the position of emit lamp. Reynolds number are based on the outer diameter of the cylinder range from 103 to $30{\times}105$. Four difference heat transfer regimes of behavior are apparent: forced convection and radiation on the outer surface of the cylinder, pure conduction, pure natural convection and radiation between lamp surface and inner surface of the cylinder. The temperature and flow patterns are illustrated by iso-contour lines for the double parameters. Also presented are results on the convective heat transfer flux and the radiative heat transfer flux as increased with Reynolds number.

  • This study aims at modeling the beryllium reflector poisoning under neutron irradiation conditions and calculating the impact of beryllium poisoning on the core parameters of ETRR-2 research reactor. The CITVAP code was used to calculate the neutron flux and parameters of ETRR-2 core with beryllium reflector elements. The neutron flux in each reflector element was calculated to solve the modeling equations for the atomic densities of lithium-6 (6Li), tritium-3 (3H), and helium-3 (3He) using the BERYL program. The results are discussed based on CITVAP calculations of the core excess reactivity and cycle length Full Power Days (FPD). Possible solutions to minimize the degradation due to beryllium poisoning are also discussed and compared based on calculations.

  • The finite-volume method for radiation in a three-dimensional non-orthogonal gas turbine combustion chamber with absorbing, emitting and anisotropically scattering medium is presented. The governing radiative transfer equation and its discretization equation using the step scheme are examined, while geometric relations which transform the Cartesian coordinate to a general body-fitted coordinate are provided to close the finite-volume formulation. The scattering phase function is modeled by a Legendre polynomial series. After a benchmark solution for three-dimensional rectangular combustor is obtained to validate the present formulation, a problem in three-dimensional non-orthogonal gas turbine combustor is investigated by changing such parameters as scattering albedo, scattering phase function and optical thickness. Heat flux in case of isotropic scattering is the same as that of non-scattering with specified heat generation in the medium. Forward scattering is found to produce higher radiative heat flux at hot and cold wall than backward scattering and optical thickness is also shown to play an important role in the problem. Results show that finite-volume method for radiation works well in orthogonal and non-orthogonal systems.

  • Infrared heating has been traditionally used in industrial applications for processes such as dehydration of food industrial. This heating method involves the application of radiation in the wavelength range of 5~50 micrometers. In this work, simultaneous heat balance equations were developed to simulate the infrared radiation heating of red peppers. The equations assume that moisture diffuses to the outer boundaries of the material in liquid form and evaporation occurs at the surface of the red peppers. Energy for moisture evaporation is supplied by the infrared radiant energy. The equations were validated with experimental data on surface temperature and average moisture content of red peppers. Average deviations of predicted surface red peppers temperature and average red peppers moisture from experimental data were 323~353K and 50~80%, respectively. The spectral extinction coefficients in the wavelength range $1.5<{\lambda}<27$ micrometer at 293K for Red Peppers were determined from results of reflection measurements and the four flux radiative heat transfer calculation. The radiation extinction coefficients were obtained from effective drying factor the temperature 373K.

  • The clear sky radiative forcings of aerosols were evaluated over East Asia. We first investigated optical characteristics of aerosol using sky radiation measurements. An algorithm of Nakajima et al. (1996) is used for retrieving aerosol parameters such as optical thickness, ${\AA}$ngstr$\"{O}$m exponent, single scattering albedo, and size distribution from sky-radiation measurements, which then can be used for examining spatial and temporal variations of aerosol. Obtaining aerosol radiative forcing at TOA and surface, a radiative transfer model is used with inputs of obtained aerosol parameters and GMS-5 satellite-based cloud optical properties. Results show that there is a good agreement of simulated downwelling radiative flux at the surface with observation within 10 W m$^{-2}$ rms errors under the clear sky condition. However, a relatively large difference up to 40 W m$^{-2}$ rms error is found under the cloudy sky condition. The computed aerosol radiative forcing at the surface shows downward flux changes ranging from -100 to -170 W m$^{-2}$ per unit aerosol optical thickness at 0.7 $\mu$m. The different values of aerosol radiative forcing among the stations is mainly due to the differences in single scattering albedo ($\omega$$_{0.7}$) and asymmetric parameter (g$_1$) related to the geographical and seasonal variations.

  • Plume radiation has been measured during ground tests of KSLV-I kick motor in order to predict the thermal load on the equipment around the kick motor at flight. The measuring positions are the kick motor base, and the measured heats were about 2${\sim}$5 w/cm$^2$. The measured heat showed a lot of shot fluctuation in their values, and the radiative heats at the latter half of time are higher than those of the first half. A plausible explanation for these phenomena was given as the variation of alumina particles with time. The radiative heats along the plume axis were also measured recently at 8 positions with 1.5m radius from plume axis, but only the initial parts of the results could be acceptable because the sensor were damaged by the accumulated heat. The strongest heat occurred at the middle of the plume, which can be explained with different view factors. Despite of the plausible explanation, it seems to need more analysis because the plume structure such as temperature, alumina particle, after burning has not been revealed until yet. The measure heat flux has been reflected in the prediction of the plume radiation at high altitude where the kick motor operates.

  • This experimental study shows the thermal characteristics of the fire fighter's waterproof clothing exposed to the radiation heat. From the test results, the surface temperature of the fire fighter's waterproof clothing exposed to the radiation with the passage of time sharply increased as the exposed-distance became closer. Also as the radiant heat flux increased, the surface temperature is higher and the time reaching steady state is sharply shorter. As the exposed-distance become more distant, the surface temperature of the fire fighter's waterproof clothing decreased and the difference of temperature between the front side and the back side of the clothing decreased as well. Besides, the radiant heat flux increased, the safety exposed-distance increased. Therefore it is necessary that fire fighter have to work keeping a fixed safe distance from the radiant heat source.
