  • The measurement of the radiation energy, trunk temperature, leaf area index (LAI), air temperature, vapor pres-sure, and precipitation has been conducted under a mixed forest at Kwangneung Arboretum during the period of 2001. Characteristics of the diurnal and seasonal variation of the radiative energy were investigated. The aerodynamic roughness length was determined as about 1.6 m and the mean albedo was about 0.1 The downward short-wave radiation was linearly correlated with the net radiation and its correlation coefficient was about 0.96. From this linear relation, the heating coefficient was calculated and its annual mean value was about 0.21 The albedo and heating coefficient was varied with season, surface characteristics, and meteorological conditions. The diurnal and seasonal variations of radiation energy were discussed in terms of the surface characteristics and meteorological conditions. In the daytime, during clear skies, net radiation was dominated by the shortwave radiation. In presence of clouds and fog, the radiation energy was diminished. At night, the net radiation was entirely dominated due to the net longwave radiation. There was no distinct diurnal variation in net radiation flux during the overcast or rainy days. The net radiation was strongest in spring and weakest in winter. The seasonal development in leaf area was also reflected in a strong seasonal pattern of the radiation energy balance. The timing, duration, and maximum leaf area and trunk temperature were found to be an important control on radiation energy budget. The trunk temperature was either equal or warmer than air temperature during most of the growing season because the canopy could absorb a substantial amount of sunlight. After autumn (after the middle of October), the trunk temperature was consistently cooler than air temperature.

  • A numerical model based on a mode method coupling beams and a rectangular plate is proposed to estimate radiation characteristics of an edge-clamped rectangular plate. The radiation efficiency and radiation power in the audio frequency range including the critical frequency can be predicted. The proposed model is rather simple and straightforward and gives reliable results comparing to the previous studies. The estimated radiation characteristics are compared to those of the pinned condition plates and also to those based on the formulae proposed by Maidanik. The radiation efficiency of the clamped plate seems a little higher than that of the pinned plate in the frequency range of corner and edge modes. It is explicitly shown that the power as well as efficiency at high frequencies is not influenced by these edge boundary conditions.

  • The radiation characteristics of a slot antenna in a plane conductor covered with a miving isotropic plasma layer are analyzed. The radiation null which causes distortion in radiation pattern is explainted by the zero of integrand in an asymptotic integral for radiation fields as a function of the plasma parameter and the plasma velocity. Numerical resutls for a radiation null calculated from various plasma and velocity parameters correspond to the results of two-dimensional problem.

  • Radiation characteristics of inductive loaded patch antennas (ILPAs) and conventional patch antennas using a half wavelength resonance mode for substrates with various dielectric constants are investigated. ILPAs have the good radiation characteristics such as high broadside gain and suppressed radiation along the horizontal plane compared to those of conventional patch antennas. We show that ILPAs with the appropriate patch length and via radius have the optimum radiation characteristics such as the highest broadside gain and the most suppressed horizontal radiation.

  • In this paper Log-Periodic Bent Dipole Antenna(LPBDA), which is composed of bent dipole elements instead of dipole elements, is proposed to reduce the size of Log-Periodic Dipole Antenna(LPDA). LPBDA for the operating frequency band of 1 ㎓∼3 ㎓ is designed and its radiation characteristics are analyzed by the moment method, and compared with radiation characteristics of LPDA. It is shown that although LPBDA decreases in size by about 20 %, radiation characteristics of LPBDA are similar to radiation characteristics of LPDA. Calculated results show good agreement with measured results.

  • Effect of a finite square substrate plane on the radiation characteristics of a microstrip patch antenna is investigated. Excellent agreements between the simulation and measured results on the radiation characteristics of patch antennas for various square substrate thicknesses and sizes are obtained. The effect of a square substrate plane on the resonant frequency and bandwidth is small, while that on the radiation pattern is large. As the substrate thickness increases, the variations of the gain of the broadside radiation, the direction of the maximum radiation, and the radiation pattern increase for the variation of a substrate size. The maximum gain difference between the broadside radiation and back radiation and the large gain of broadside radiation are obtained when the length of a side of a square substrate plane is $0.8\;{\lambda}_0$.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the radiation characteristics of the shaped Cassegrainian antenna. Radiation pattern of the sub-reflector is calculated by GTD (Geometrical Theory of Diffraction) The complete radiation patterns are obtained by summing the reflect field from the surface and the diffracted fields from the edge. The first and the second derivative on the sub-reflector are calculated by the local interpolation technique. The Radiation characteristics of the main-reflector are obtained by integrating the surface current density, which is derived from PO approximation. The radiation integral is expanded by the Jacobi-Bessel series for the purpose of reducing the computation time.

  • In this paper, a printed small Ultra-Wideband (UWB) antenna with directive radiation characteristics based on combination of electric-magnetic radiators is presented. The combinations of the electric and magnetic type antennas result in the directive radiation patterns for all observed UWB frequency band. Simple combination of dipole antenna and loop antenna is also presented to show that proper configuration of electric radiator and magnetic radiator can produces directive radiation characteristics. The target frequency is from 3.1 GHz to 10.6 GHz with size of $15\;mm{\times}31\;mm$. A proto-type of the combined antenna is simulated, fabricated and measured. Simulation and experimental results of input impedance and gain characteristics of the proposed antenna are presented. There are good agreements between the simulated and measured VSWR curves. Also, the results show the directive radiation characteristics with small antenna form factor over the target frequency range.

  • Vibration characteristics of a tire play an important role to judge a ride conformability and sound quality for a passenger car. In this study, the experimental investigation for the sound radiation of a radial tire has been examined. Based on the sound intensity techniques, the sound pressure field and the sound radiation are measured. It turns out that air pressure in tire, tread patterns, and aspect ratio of the tire govern the sound radiation characteristics. Then a numerical analysis for the tire element is conducted. During analysis, the tire element is modelled as an elastic ring. The comparison shows that the numerical output correlates to the experimental data.
