  • In this study, the thickness of the liquid sheet formed by a low speed impinging jet onto a flat plate was measured by the direct contact method. The spatial distribution characteristics of the sheet thickness in the radial and circumferential directions, and the effects of jet velocity and liquid viscosity were analyzed. The measurement results were compared with the theoretical predictions. The wavy surface was observed in the case of low viscosity water, but not in the high viscosity aqueous glycerol solutions. The sheet thickness increased as the circumferential angle increased or the distance from the impinging point increased, but the thickness decreased as the circumferential angle increased around the impinging point. As the jet speed increased, the sheet thickness decreased, and the sheet thickness increased as the liquid viscosity increased. Comparison with the theoretical predictions showed that the measurement results agreed well in the case of low viscosity water or high viscosity liquids around the impinging point. The distribution characteristics of the sheet thickness can provide useful means for prediction of spray characteristics in splash plate injectors.

  • The feasibility of using the Monte Carlo code MCS to generate multigroup cross sections for nodal diffusion simulations RAST-F of liquid metal fast reactors is investigated in this paper. The performance of the MCS/RAST-F code system is assessed using steady-state simulations of the ANTS-100e core. The results show good agreement between MCS/RAST-F and MCS reference solutions, with a keff difference of less than 77 pcm and root-mean-square differences in radial and axial power of less than 0.5% and 0.25%, respectively. Furthermore, the MCS/RAST-F reactivity feedback coefficients are within three standard deviations of the MCS coefficients. To validate the internal thermal-hydraulic (TH) feedback capability in RAST-F code, the coupled neutronic/TH1D simulation of ANTS-100e is performed using the case matrix obtained from MCS branch calculations. The results are compared to those obtained using the MARS-LBE system code and show good agreement with relative temperature differences in fuel and coolant of less than 0.8%. This study demonstrates that the MCS/RAST-F code system can produce accurate results for core steady-state neutronic calculations and for coupled neutronic/TH simulations.

  • Data from 122 pumping tests were obtained from 100 boreholes in granites, volcanic rocks, metamorphic rocks, and Cretaceous and Tertiary sedimentary rocks, and then were analyzed using AQTESOLV. Results from 86 of the 122 tests ($71\%$) have an analytical solution corresponding to Theis (1935), Cooper-Jacob (1946), Papadopulos-Cooper (1967), Hantush (1962), Moench (1985), or Hantush-Jacob (1955), whereas the remaining 36 results ($29.5\%$) do not correspond to any of the analytical methods. Of the 86 results, only 17 match the Theis and Cooper-Jacob methods, indicating that the basic methods fer pumping test analysis are useful far only $14\%$ of the total data. This suggests that analytical solutions derived using leaky boundary conditions are appropriate for the analysis of pumping test data in fractured aquifers in this study. Furthermore, the results show the importance of carefully selecting an appropriate model for the analysis of pumping test data. Results from the 122 pumping tests were also analyzed using the GRF model. Using the Barker method, the results show that 77 of the 122 tests ($63\%$) have dimensions ranging between 1.1-2.9. Of these 77 solutions, ($39(44.2{\%})$) have a fractional dimension of 1.1-1.9, ($26(6.5{\%})$) show 2-dimensional radial flow also applicable to the Theis method, and ($38(49.3{\%})$) have dimensions of 2.1-2.9. The results show that groundwater flows according to a fractional flow dimension in fractured aquifers.

  • New photometric and spectroscopic solutions of W-type overcontact binary V 417 Aql were obtained by solving the UBV light curves of Samec et al. (1997) and radial-velocity ones of Lu & Rucinski (1999) with the 2003 version of the Wilson-Devinney binary code. In the light curve synthesis the light of a third-body, which Qian (2003) proposed, was considered and obtained about 2.7%, 2.2%, and 0.4% for U, B, and V bandpasses, respectively. The model with third-light is better fitted to eclipse parts than that with no third-light. Absolute dimensions of V417 Aql are determined from our solution as $M_1$= 0.53 $M_{*}$, $M_2$= 1.45 $M_{*}$, $R_1$= 0.84 $R_{*}$, and $R_2$= 1.31 $M_{*}$, and the distance to it is deduced as about 216pc. Our distance is well consistent with that (204pc) derived from Rucinski & Duerbeck's (1997) relation, $M_{v}$ = $M_{v}$(log P, B-V), but is more distant than that (131$\pm$40pc) determined by the Hipparcos trigonometric parallax. The difference may result from the relatively large error of Hipparcos parallax for V 417 Aql.l.

  • The FUel Rod Analysis(FURA) code is developed using two-dimensional finite element methods for axisymmetric and plane stress analysis of fuel rod. It predicts the thermal and mechanical behavior of fuel rod during normal and load follow operations. To evaluate the exact temperature distribution and the inner gas pressure, the radial deformation of pellet and clad, the fission gas release are considered over the full-length of fuel rod. The thermal element equation is derived using Galerkin's techniques. The displacement element equation is derived using the principle of virtual works. The mechanical analysis can accommodate various components of strain: elastic, plastic, creep and thermal strain as well as strain due to swelling, relocation and densification. The 4-node quadratic isoparametric elements are adopted, and the geometric model is confined to a half-pellet-height region with the assumption that pellet-pellet interaction is symmetrical. The pellet cracking and crack healing, pellet-cladding interaction are modelled. The Newton-Raphson iteration with an implicit algorithm is applied to perform the analysis of non-linear material behavior accurately and stably. The pellet and cladding model has been compared with both analytical solutions and experimental results. The observed and predicted results are in good agreement. The general behavior of fuel rod is calculated by axisymmetric system and the cladding behavior against radial crack is used by plane stress system. The sensitivity of strain aging of PWR fuel cladding tube due to load following is evaluated in terms of linear power, load cycle frequency and amplitude.

  • Curved beam structures are generally used as components in structures such as railroad bridges and vehicles. The stability analysis of curved beams has been studied by a large number of researchers. Due to the complexities of structural components, it is difficult to obtain an analytical solution for any boundary conditions. In order to overcome these difficulties, the differential quadrature method (DQM) has been applied for a large number of cases. In this study, DQM was used to solve the complicated partial differential equations for buckling analysis of curved beams. The governing differential equation was deduced and solved for beams subjected to uniformly distributed radial loads. Critical loads were calculated with various opening angles, boundary conditions, and parameters. The results of the DQM were compared with exact solutions for available cases, and the DQM gave outstanding accuracy even when only a small number of grid points was used. Critical loads were also calculated for the in-plane inextensional buckling of the asymmetric curved beams, and two theories were compared. The study of a beam with extensibility of the arch axis shows that the effects on the critical loads are significant.

  • An analytic solution to the mild-slope equation is derived for waves propagating over an axi-symmetric pit. The water depth inside the pit varies in proportion to a power of radial distance from the pit center. The governing equation is transformed into ordinary differential equations by using separation of variables, and the coefficients of the equations are transformed into explicit forms by using Hunt's (1979) approximate solution. Finally, by using the Frobenius series, the analytic solution is derived. Due to the feature of Hunt's equation, the present analytic solution is accurate in shallow and deep waters, while it is less accurate in intermediate depth water. The validity of the analytic solution is demonstrated by comparison with numerical solutions. The analytic solution is also used to examine the effects of pit geometry and relative depth on wave transformation.

  • To establish an agar-gel immunodiffusion (AGID) test for detection of antibodies to Aujeszky's disease virus(ADV) in swine, the precipitating antigens were prepared by four procedures using the Aujeszky's disease virus, NYJ-1-87 strain isolated from the affected piglets in Korea. The optimal condition for AGID test and the properties of the antigens were investigated. To determine the optimal concentration of antigens, four antigens were experimentally prepared by concentrating the viral fluids by 1/30 to 1/200. It was proved that the antigen precipitated with ammonium sulfate at concentration of 1/100 was the most efficient to detect ADV antibodies by AGID test. When the relationship between the concentration of the antigens and the size of precipitating in radial immunodiffusion test was investigated, a high correlation coefficiency at r=0.95 (y=0.23x+23.4) was estimated, In study on the effects of various buffered salt solutions and agars on the sensitivity of AGID test by using the experimental ADV antigens, it was found that 0.05M tris buffer without sodium chloride at pH 7.2 induced the most distinctive precipitating lines, and that there was no significant differences in the sensitivity between the agarose and Noble's special agar. When the efficiency of AGID test was compared with serum neutralization(SN) test, the sensitivity of AGID test was 100% in SN titer over 1 : 16, 91.7% in SN titer of 1 : 8 and 57.1% in SN titer of 1 : 4. The specificity of AGID test compared with the sera with SN titer under 1 : 2 was 98.4%. Protein analysis of the antigens by SDS-PAGE indicated that antigen I and antigen III showed a specific band of polypeptides with molecular weight of 116 K in comparison with the control antigen. Antigen IV, treated with tween-80 and ammonium sulfate, revealed specific polypeptides bands at the molecular weights 45K, 98K and 150 K.

  • An axisymmetric shell element which includes the effects of the meridional and circumferential cable prestresses is developed. The fluid-structure interaction is expressed as added mass effect which is in proportion to the acceleration of the structure in interface surface. The added mass is obtained by using finite element method under the assumption that the fluid is invicid, incompressible and irrotational. It is coded for personal computer by the maximum use of axisymmetic properties and the dynamic analysis are performed under seismic exitations. A ring element makes the characteristics of the axisymmetric shell to be fully utilized. The elgenvalue solutons under the initial prestresses and the internal fluid are well agreed with the exact solutions and references by using under 20 elements. The eigenvalues are decreased along the increasing the height of internal fluid and these effects are dominant under the lower wave numbers. The results of the seismic analysis show that the radial deflection under the meridional prestress is a little larger than that under the circumferential prestress.

  • We analyzed a noise-sensitivity profile of a specific SQUID sensor system for the localization of brain activity. The location of a neuromagnetic current source is estimated from the recording of spatially distributed SQUID sensors. According to the specific arrangement of the sensors, each site in the source space has different sensitivity, that is, the difference in the lead field vectors. Conversely, channel noises on each sensor will give a different amount of the estimation error to each of the source sites. e.g., a distant source site from the sensor system has a small lead-field vector in magnitude and low sensitivity. However, when we solve the inverse problem from the recorded sensor data, we use the inverse of the lead-field vector that is rather large, which results in an overestimated noise power on the site. Especially, the spatial sensitivity profile of a gradiometer system measuring tangential fields is much more complex than a radial magnetometer system. This is one of the causes to make the solutions of inverse problems unstable on intervening of the sensor noise. In this study, in order to improve the localization accuracy, we calculated the noise-sensitivity profile of our 40-channel planar SQUID gradiometer system, and applied it as a normalization weight factor to the source localization using synthetic aperture magnetometry.
