This paper proposes a method for generating radar images used in a ship handling simulator, which includes mathematical logics based on radar equations and information from Openflight format files. In order to make radar image much similar to that of real radar in PPI type, the proposed mathematical logic derives radar video signals under the consideration of not only the data form flight format file of simulation scenes, but also geographical radar's position. The proposed method is considered useful to make radar images in ship handling simulator with accuracy and reality.

The Radar altimeter transmits radio signals to the surface, receives the backscattered signals and measures the distance between the airplane and the nadir surface. The measurements of radar altimeter are affected by various factors on the surface below the aircraft. This study performed flight campaigns in June 2012 and acquired raw data from radar altimeter, LiDAR and other sensors. Based on the LiDAR DSM (Digital Surface Model) as a reference data, the characteristics of radar altimeter were analyzed in the respect of range and surface area affecting on the receiving power of the radar altimeter. Consequently, the radar altimeter was strongly affected by the surface area within beam width and reflectivity related to RCS (Radar Cross Section) rather than range.

The compact tracking radar system is a pulsed radar tracking system that searches, detects, and tracks targets in real time against aircraft targets with a small RCS(Radar Cross Section) maneuvering at high speed. This paper describes the development of comprehensive performance test equipment to verify the performance of the radar system in a anechoic chamber environment. Describes the design and manufacture of comprehensive performance test equipment to meet requirements, including the generation of simulated target signals to simulate aircraft target signals to verify performance in the laboratory environment of radar systems. It also describes a GUI(Graphic User Interface) program to check performance through a test in conjunction with the tracking radar system. Verify the comprehensive performance test equipment implemented through the performance test.

Helicopter-borne FMCW radar altimeter obtains the altitude information using the beat frequency between the transmitted and reflected signal from the nadir direction. However, the altitude error may exist when the strong echoes are received from the large RCS at the off-nadir direction because of the wide beamwidth of the altimeter antenna. In this paper, in order to investigate the effect of the altitude error due to the large RCS around the off-nadir direction, the reflected signals were measured by using the corner reflectors displaced on the several reference ground positions, and the acquired signals were analyzed and compared in the spectral domain. The analysis results can be used for the improvement of the altitude accuracy in the radar altimeter.

A mixer is a key component in the wireless communication systems. In this paper, we design a mixer which is used in a frequency modulated continuous wave(FMCW) radar system. The frequency sweep range of the radar is from 10 GHz to 11 GHz. The transmitted and received signals of the FMCW radar are applied to LO and RF ports of the mixer, respectively, but the frequency difference between the two signals, which is called "a beat frequency" is under a few KHz and depending on the distance to target. Thus the isolation between the LO and RF ports is very important factor to design this mixer. In this paper we propose a single balanced resistive mixer using GaAs MESFET for this application. We first design a single-ended type resistive mixer using a simulation tool, then design a balanced type to increase the LO-to-RF isolation of the mixer. We fabricated the mixer on the substrate of dielectric constant 10 and thickness 0.635 mm. The measured results show that the isolation and conversion loss of the mixer over the frequency band is 20dB and 10.5dB, respectively. The LO input power for operating the proposed mixer is +3dBm, which is lower than a general conventional mixer's LO power. The 1 dB compression point is 6dBm.

There are increasing demands to provide early warning against intruding drones and cope with potential threats. Commercial anti-drone systems are mostly based on simple target detection by radar reflections. In real scenario, however, it becomes essential to obtain drone radar signatures so that hostile targets are recognized in advance. We present experimental test results that micro-Doppler radar signature delivers partial information on multi-rotor platforms and exhibits limited performance in drone recognition and classification. Afterward, we attempt to generate high resolution profile of flying drone targets. To this purpose, wide bands radar signals are employed to carry out inverse synthetic aperture radar(ISAR) imaging against moving drones. Following theoretical analysis, experimental field tests are carried out to acquire real target signals. Our preliminary tests demonstrate that high resolution ISAR imaging provides effective measures to detect and classify multiple drone targets in air.

Jamming simulator has developed for the purpose of the test and evaluation on the electronic protection capabilities of the tracking radar onboard ship. This simulator has the capabilities to generate and radiate the jamming signals against the radar as well as those to receive, analyze and identify the radar signals at a real sea environment. The limited space of ship superstructure has led to the serious distortion caused by the ring around phenomenon that some sidelobes of the jamming beams were coming back to the receiving antenna. In this paper, we have proposed the methods to eliminate the ring around. First, we have inserted the groove metal screen between transmitting and receiving antennas. Second, we have used the PRI(Pulse Repetition Interval) tracking loop to control the switching timing of the input radar and the output jamming signal. Finally, we have demonstrated the performance and effectiveness of the proposed methods through the sea trial.

Recently, ground penetrating radar(GPR) has been widely used in detecting metallic and nonmetallic buried landmines and a number of related researches have been reported. A novel preprocessing method is proposed in this paper to flag potential locations of buried mine-like objects from GPR array measurements. GPR operates by measuring the reflection of an electromagnetic pulse from discontinuities in subsurface dielectric properties. As the GPR pulse propagates in the geologic medium, it suffers nonlinear attenuation as the result of absorption and dispersion, besides spherical divergence. In the proposed algorithm, a logarithmic transformed regression model which successfully represents the time-varying signal amplitude of the GPR data is estimated at first. Then, background signals may be densely distributed near the regression model and candidate signals of targets may be far away from the regression model in the time-amplitude space. Based on the observation, GPR signals are decomposed into candidate signals of targets and background signals using residuals computed from the estimated value by regression and the measurement of GPR. Candidate signals which may contain target signals and noise signals need to be refined. Finally, targets are detected through the refinement of candidate signals based on geometric signatures of mine-like objects. Our algorithm is evaluated using real GPR data obtained from indoor controlled environment and the experimental results demonstrate remarkable performance of our mine-like object detection method.

In this paper, a retrodirective anatenna array system is proposed and the possibility of actively cancelling electromagnetic waves based on this system is investigated. When a rectrodirective array system receives an electromagnetic wave, it can send waves in the direction of the incoming signal without prior knowledge of the direction. In applications to cancellation of radar signals, the system can generate and send signals to the radar so that it cancels the radar signals that are reflected back to the radar. In such a system, isolation between the input and output ports is a key factor that determines the effectiveness of cancellation. In this work, a dual-conversion mixer system is proposed to maximize the isolation. Since this minimizes the difference between the direction of reflection of radar signals and the transmission of cancellation signals, the effectiveness of cancellation is maximized. Experimental results for a metallic plate and metallic cylinder shows as much as 29-dB reduction in reflection for a $2{\times}2$ retrodirective array based on proposed dual-conversion mixer system, which verifies the proposed method of active cancellation.
