In this study, urban runoff analyses were performed using high resolution Quantitative Precipitation Estimation (QPE), and variation of rainfall and runoff were analyzed to evaluate QPE data for urban runoff analysis. The five drainage districts (Seocho3, 4, 5, Yeoksam and Nonhyun) around Gangnam station were chosen as study area, the area is $7.4km^2$. Rainfall data from KMA AWS (34 stations), SKP AWS (156 stations) and Gwanduk radar were used for QPEs in Seoul area. Four types of QPE(QPE1: KMA AWS, QPE2: KMA+ SKP AWS, QPE3: Gwangduk radar, QPE4: QPE2+QPE3) of 6 events in July 2013 were generated by using Krigging and conditional merging. The temporal and spatial resolution of QPEs are 10 minutes and 250 m, respectively. The complex pipe network were treated as 773 manholes, 772 sub-drainage districts and 1,059 pipelines for urban runoff analysis as input data. QPE2 and QPE4 show spatial variation of rainfall by sub-drainage districts as 1.9 times bigger than QPE1. The peak runoff of QPE2 and QPE4 also show spatial variation as 6 times bigger than Gangnam and Seocho AWS. Thus, the spatial variation of rainfall and runoff could exist in small area such as this study area, and using high-resolution rainfall data is desirable for accurate urban runoff analysis.
The need for economical and accurate presentations of equivalent radar reflectivity( $Z_e$) data in an orthogonal coordinate system has existed for some time. So, in this study, a fast and efficient procedure has been developed which allows the systematic interpolation of digital reflectivity data from radar space into Cartesian space. At first, QC(Quality Control) of radar data has been executed for extracting uncontaminated Constant Altitude Plan Position Indicator(CAPPI) data. The algorithm is designed so that only one ordered pass through the original Plan Position Indicator(PPI) scan data is necessary to complete the interpolation process. The model can calculate various resolution and altitude reflectivity data for many kinds of hydrological usage.

The typhoon Rusa passed through the Korean peninsula from the west-southern part to the east-northern part in the summer season of 2002. The flash flood due to the Rusa was occurred over the Korean peninsula and especially the damage was concentrated in Kangnung, Yangyang, Kosung, and Jeongsun areas of Kangwon-Do. Since the latter half of the 1990s the flash flood has became one of the frequently occurred natural disasters in Korea. Flash floods are a significant threat to lives and properties. The government has prepared against the flood disaster with the structural and nonstructural measures such as dams, levees, and flood forecasting systems. However, since the flood forecasting system requires the rainfall observations as the input data of a rainfall-runoff model, it is not a realistic system for the flash flood which is occurred in the small basins with the short travel time of flood flow. Therefore, the flash flood forecasting system should be constructed for providing the realistic alternative plan for the flash flood. To do so, firstly, Flash Flood Monitoring and Prediction (FFMP) Model must be developed suitable to Korea terrain. In this paper, We develop the FFMP model which is based on GIS, Radar techniques and hydro-geomorphologic approaches. We call it the F2MAP model. F2MAP model has three main components (1) radar rainfall estimation module for the Quantitative Precipitation Forecasts (QPF), (2) GIS Module for the Digital terrain analysis, called TOPAZ(Topographic PArametiZation), (3) hydrological module for the estimation of threshold runoff and Flash Flood Guidance(FFG). For the performance test of the model developed in this paper, F2MAP model applied to the Kangwon-Do, Korea, where had a severe damage by the Typhoon Rusa in August, 2002. The result shown that F2MAP model is suitable for the monitoring and the prediction of flash flood.
Hydrometeor type and Drop Size Distribution (DSD) in cloud are the fundamental properties that may help explain the rain formation processes and determine the parameters of radar meteorology. This study presents a preliminary analysis of hydrometeor types and DSD data of cloud measured with a PARSIVEL (PARticle SIze and VELocity) optical disdrometer at the site of Cloud Physics Observation System (CPOS, $37^{\circ}41^{\prime}N$, $128^{\circ}45^{\prime}E$, 843 m from sea level) in Daegwallyeong mountainside of Korea. The method has been validated by comparing the observed rainfall rates with the computed ones from the fitted distribution, using the physical data such as DSD, terminal velocity, and rain intensity which were measured by a Micro-Rain Radar (MRR) and a PARSIVEL optical disdrometer. The analysis period started in three cases: on rainy days with light rain (15.5 mm), moderate rain (76 mm), and heavy rain (121 mm), from March to November 2007, respectively.

In this study, a space-time rainfall grid field generation model based on multifractal theory was verified using nine flood events in the upstream watershed of Chungju dam in South Korea. For this purpose, KMA radar rainfall data sets were analyzed for the space-time multifractal characteristics. Simulated rainfall fields that represent the multifractal characteristics of observed rainfall field were reproduced using the space-time rainfall grid field generation model with log-Poisson distribution and three-dimension wavelet function. Simulated rainfall fields were applied to the S-RAT model as input data and compared with both observed rainfall fields and low-resolution rainfall field runoff. Error analyses using RMSE, RRMSE, MAE, SS, NPE and PTE indicated that the peak discharge increases about 20.03% and the time to peak decreases about 0.81%.

In recent, the natural disaster like localized heavy rainfall due to the climate change is increasing. Therefore, it is important issue that the precise observation of rainfall and accurate spatial distribution of the rainfall for fast recovery of damaged region. Thus, researches on the use of the radar rainfall data have been performed. But there is a limitation in the estimation of spatial distribution of rainfall using rain gauge. Accordingly, this study uses the Kriging method which is a spatial interpolation method, to measure the rainfall field in Namgang river dam basin. The purpose of this study is to apply KED(Kriging with External Drift) with OK(Ordinary Kriging) and CK(Co-Kriging), generally used in Korea, to estimate rainfall field and compare each method for evaluate the applicability of each method. As a result of the quantitative assessment, the OK method using the raingauge only has 0.978 of correlation coefficient, 0.915 of slope best-fit line, and 0.957 of $R^2$ and shows an excellent result that MAE, RMSE, MSSE, and MRE are the closest to zero. Then KED and CK are in order of their good results. But the quantitative assessment alone has limitations in the evaluation of the methods for the precise estimation of the spatial distribution of rainfall. Thus, it is considered that there is a need to application of more sophisticated methods which can quantify the spatial distribution and this can be used to compare the similarity of rainfall field.

The Korea Meteorological Administration has operated the Automatic Weather Stations, of the average 13 km horizontal resolution, to observe rainfall. However, an additional RADAR network also has been operated in all-weather conditions, because AWS network could not observed rainfall over the sea. In general, the rain rate is obtained by estimating the relationship between the radar reflectivity (Z) and the rainfall (R). But this empirical relationship needs to be optimized on the rainfall over the Korean peninsula. This study was carried out to optimize the Z-R relationship in the summer of 2014 using a parallel Micro Genetic Algorithm. The optimized Z-R relationship, $Z=120R^{1.56}$, using a micro genetic algorithm was different from the various Z-R relationships that have been previously used. However, the landscape of the fitness function found in this study looked like a flat plateau. So there was a limit to the fine estimation including the complex development and decay processes of precipitation between the ground and an altitude of 1.5km.

Automotive radar that is one of the most important equipment in high-tech vehicles, is commonly used to detect the speed and range of objects such as cars. In this paper, in addition to objects detection, a method of retrieving precipitation information using the automotive radar data is proposed. The proposed method is based on the fact that the degree of attenuation of the returned radar signal differs depending on the precipitation intensity and the assumption that the distribution of precipitation is constant in short spatial and temporal observation. The purpose of this paper is to assesses the possibility of retrieving precipitation information using a vehicle radar. To verify the feasibility of the proposed method during actual driving, a method of estimating precipitation information for each time segment of various precipitation events was applied. From the results of driving field experiments, it was found that the proposed method is suitable for estimating precipitation information in various rainfall types.
On the study of the characteristics and life cycle of mesoscale convective band in type of airmass that occurred in the Honam area from June to September for only 4 years in the period of 2009~2012, 10 examples based on the amount of rainfall with AWS 24 hours/60 minutes rainfalls, Mt. Osung radar 1.5 km CAPPI/X-SECT images and KLAPS data for convective band with heavy rainfall event were selected. There were analyzed and classified by using the convective band with heavy rainfall occurred along the convergence line of sea wind in the form of individual multi-cellular cell and moving direction of convective band appeared in a variety of patterns; toward southwestern (2 cases), northeastern (4 cases), congesting (2 cases), and changing its moving direction (2 cases). The case study dated of the 17th Aug. 2012 was chosen and implemented by sequentially different evolution of its shape along the convergence line of sea wind cell and moving direction of convective band as equivalent potential temperatures at the lower layer have increased to the upper layer 500 hPa, that the individual cells were developed vertically and horizontally through their merger, but owing to divergence caused by weakened rainfall and descending air current, the growth of new cell was inhibited resulting in dissipation of convective cells.
This study is to combine precipitation data with different spatial-temporal characteristics using an optimal weighting method. This optimal weighting method is designed for combination of AWS rain gage data and S-band RADAR-estimated rain data with weighting function in inverse proportion to own mean square error for the previous time step. To decide the optimal weight coefficient for optimized precipitation according to different training time, the method has been performed on Changma case with a long spell of rainy hour for the training time from 1 hour to 10 hours. Horizontal field of optimized precipitation tends to be smoothed after 2 hours training time, and then optimized precipitation has a good agreement with synoptic station rainfall assumed as true value. This result suggests that this optimal weighting method can be used for production of high-resolution quantitative precipitation rate using various data sets.
