To clarify the effect of forest environmental changes (forest type difference and clearcut) on water storage capacity in soil and stream flow, watershed had been investigated in Pyungchang, Kangwon-Do during 1983∼1993. Hydrological datas such as runoff, monthly ratio of runoff to precipitation, runoff-duration, monthly runoff(by plenty, ordinary, low and scanty duration), total runoff, direct runoff by runoff components, bulk density, porosity, coarse pore, fine pore, permeability and effective water storage were obtained from Backokpo and Yimokjong watersheds. The monthly ratio of runoff to precipitation, runoff and runoff-duration were higher in Yimokiong than in Backokpo due to forest type difference. On compararing pre-treatment with trement period in two experimental watersheds, pre-treatment period was lower than treatment period. Physical properties of soil such as bulk density, porosity, permeability, and effective water storage capacity conditions were better during the pre-trement period than treatment period in the two experiment plots.
Estimation of runoff peak is needed to assess water availability, in order to support the multifaceted water uses and functions, hence to underscore the modalities for efficient water utilization. The magnitude of storm rainfall acts as a primary input for basin level runoff computation. The rainfall-runoff linkage plays a pivotal role in water resource system management and feasibility level planning for resource distribution. Considering this importance, a case study has been carried out in the Hancheon basin of Jeju Island where distinctive hydrological characteristics are investigated for continuous storm rainfall and high permeable geological features. The study aims to estimate unit hydrograph parameters, peak runoff and peak time of storm rainfalls based on Clark unit hydrograph method. For analyzing observed runoff, five storm rainfall events were selected randomly from recent years' rainfall and HEC-hydrologic modeling system (HMS) model was used for rainfall-runoff data processing. The simulation results showed that the peak runoff varies from 164 to 548 m3/sec and peak time (onset) varies from 8 to 27 hours. A comprehensive relationship between Clark unit hydrograph parameters (time of concentration and storage coefficient) has also been derived in this study. The optimized values of the two parameters were verified by the analysis of variance (ANOVA) and runoff comparison performance were analyzed by root mean square error (RMSE) and Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) estimation. After statistical analysis of the Clark parameters significance level was found in 5% and runoff performances were found as 3.97 RMSE and 0.99 NSE, respectively. The calibration and validation results indicated strong coherence of unit hydrograph model responses to the actual situation of historical storm runoff events.
Agriculture nonpoint pollution source is a significant contributor to water quality degradation. To establish effective water quality control policy, environpolitics establishment person must be able to estimate nonpoint source loads to lakes and streams. To meet this need for orchard area, we investigated a real rainfall runoff phenomena about it. We developed nonpoint source runoff estimation models for vineyard area that has lots of fertilizer, compost specially between agricultural areas. Data used in nonpoint source estimation model gained from real measuring runoff loads and it surveyed for two years(2008-2009 year) about vineyard. Nonpoint source runoff loads estimation models were composed of using independent variables(rainfall, storm duration time(SDT), antecedent dry weather period(ADWP), total runoff depth(TRD), average storm intensity(ASI), average runoff intensity(ARI)). Rainfall, total runoff depth and average runoff intensity among six independent variables were specially high related to nonpoint source runoff loads such as BOD, COD, TN, TP, TOC and SS. The best regression model to predict nonpoint source runoff load was Model 6 and regression factor of all water quality items except for was $R^2=0.85$.

The objective of this study was to evaluate of the Tank model in simulating runoff discharge from rural watershed in comparison to the SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) model. The model parameters of SWAT was calibrated by the shuffled complex evolution-university Arizona (SCE-UA) method while Tank model was calibrated by genetic algorithm (GA) and validated. Four dam watersheds were selected as the study areas. Hydrological data of the Water Management Information System (WAMIS) and geological data were used as an input data for the model simulation. Runoff data were used for the model calibration and validation. The determination coefficient ($R^2$), root mean square error (RMSE), Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency index (NSE) were used to evaluate the model performances. The result indicated that both SWAT model and Tank model simulated runoff reasonably during calibration and validation period. For annual runoff, the Tank model tended to overestimate, especially for small runoff (< 0.2 mm) whereas SWAT model underestimate runoff as compared to observed data. The statistics indicated that the Tank model simulated runoff more accurately than the SWAT model. Therefore the Tank model could be a good tool for runoff simulation considering its ease of use.

The study was aimed at analyzing the relationship between the characteristics of urban green infrastructure and stormwater runoff in a small urban watershed composed of 22 drainage basins. The green areas of which soils are not sealed and allow water infiltrate, were examined for different types of green spaces. In a comparative study for drainage basins of which green spaces are 15.5% and 34.4%, respectively, runoffs were not different with the size of green space. It was attributed to that the increase of runoff by greater road area offset the advantage of greater green area. Another comparative measurement of runoff for drainage basins with similar green area size showed that runoff decreased with greater permeable area (school ground area) and smaller road area. The runoff measurements could address that runoff rates are affected not only by green area size but also by the type of green area and other land covers related to permeability and flow into drainage. It implicated that the improvement of urban green infrastructure as a functional unit for water infiltration and interception is important for stormwater runoff management.
This study examined characteristic differences by the rainfall direction on the runoff responses. The directional characteristics of hydrological components in a basin were quantified by von Mises distribution. The runoff hydrograph was derived using the result of convolution integration of each distribution and this hydrograph was compared with GIUH model and observed data. As a result, it was found that runoff response by rainfall direction was more similar the observed rainfall-runoff data than the runoff result using GIUH model. These results implies that runoff modeling could be improved by considering directional components in hydrologic analysis. This study would be helpful to reduce uncertainties of hydrologic analysis considering a non-linearity of rainfall-runoff process by the rainfall direction.

In this study, parameters of long and short term runoff model were optimized using genetic algorithm as a basic research for integrated water management in a watershed. In case of Korea where drought and flood occurr frequently, the integrated water management is necessary to minimize possible damage of drought and flood. Modified TANK model was optimized as a long term runoff model and storage-function model was optimized as a short term runoff model. Besides distinguished parameters were applied to modified TANK model for supplementing defect that the model estimates less runoff in the storm period. As a result of application, simulated long and short term runoff results showed 7% and 5% improvement compared with before optimized on the average. In case of modified TANK model using distinguished parameters, the simulated runoff after optimized showed more interrelationship than before optimized. Therefore, modified TANK model can be applied for the long term water balance as an integrated water management in a watershed. In case of storage-function model, simulated runoff in the storm period showed high interrelationship with observed one. These optimized models can be applied for the runoff analysis of watershed.

Water quality samples were taken for every two hours whenever runoff occurred by rainfall to investigate concentration variations of T-N, T-P and SS during runoff process from a paddy field. The difference between the highest concentration in a runoff event and flow weighted mean concentration for T-N, T-P, SS placed between 3.07∼40.16%, 11.44∼60.80%, and 15.11∼64.5%, respectively. The difference between the lowest concentration in event and event mean concentration for T-N, T-P, SS ranged between -7.24∼-31.84%, -11.59∼-47.86%, and -5.21∼-36.20%, respectively. The relationship between runoff and mass load was derived for each storm event using observed data. The relationship between runoff and mass load showed linear relationship regardless of water quality constituents and rainfall amount. The results suggested that relationship between T-N and T-P loads and runoff should be prepared separately in considering of fertilization effect and seasonal conditions. The relationship between SS and runoff should be made to reflect seasonal conditions and tillage effect.
For the long-term strategic water resources planning, forecasting the future streamflow change is important to meet the demand of a growing society. The streamflow variation to the decade-long precipitation was investigated for the two major stage gauging stations in Korea. Precipitation and runoff characteristics have been analyzed at Yongwol stream stage in the Han River as well as Sutong stream stage in the Kum River for the future water resources management strategies. Monte Carlo method has been applied to estimate the future precipitation and runoff. Based on the trend line of 10-year moving average of runoff depth for the historical runoff records, the relation between runoff and the time variation was examined in more detail using regression analysis. This study showed that the surface flows have been significantly decreased while precipitation has been stable in these basins. Decreasing in runoff reflects the regional watershed characteristics such as forest cover changes. The findings of this study could contribute to the planning and development for the efficient water resources utilization.
Physically-based resampling scheme for roughness coefficient of surface runoff considering the spatial landuse distribution was suggested for the purpose of effective operational application of recent grid-based distributed rainfall runoff model. Generally grid scale(mother scale) of hydrologic modeling can be greater than the scale (child scale) of original GIS thematic digital map when the objective basin is wide or topographically simple, so the modeler uses large grid scale. The resampled roughness coefficient was estimated and compared using 3 different schemes of Predominant, Composite and Mosaic approaches and total runoff volume and peak streamflow were computed through distributed rainfall-runoff model. For quantitative assessment of biases between computational simulation and observation, runoff responses for the roughness estimated using the 3 different schemes were evaluated using MAPE(Mean Areal Percentage Error), RMSE(Root-Mean Squared Error), and COE(Coefficient of Efficiency). As a result, in the case of 500m scale Mosaic resampling for the natural and urban basin, the distribution of surface runoff roughness coefficient shows biggest difference from that of original scale but surface runoff simulation shows smallest, especially in peakflow rather than total runoff volume.
