  • A cone-shaped active magnetic healing spindle system for high speed internal grinding with built-in motor that has 7.5kW power and maximum rotational speed of 50,000 rpm is designed and built. Using cone-shaped AMB(Active Magnetic Bearing) system, the axial rotor dick and magnets of conventional 5-axis actuating design can be eliminated. so this concept of design provides a simple magnetic bearing system. In this paper, the cone-shaped electromagnets are designed by magnetic circuit theory, and a de-coupled direct feedback PID controller is applied to control the coupled magnetic bearings. The designed crone-shaped AMB spindle system is built and constructed with a digital control system, which has TMS320C6702 DSP, 16 bit AD/DA, switching power amplifier and gap sensors. As the AMB system provides high damping ratio eliminating overshoot and resonance speed, this spindle runs up to 40,000 rpm stably with about 5${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ of runout.

  • A rotor dynamic analysis is implemented to confirm the vibration stability of the high speed centrifugal chiller coupled with gear system. As the rotating speed of the centrifugal chiller under investigated is increased up to 17,605 rpm at the pinion rotating part, the bearing instability is getting higher and, furthermore, the rotor-bearing system might experience a few critical speed which lead to system failure due to the excessive vibration. In this study, considering the loading capacity and stability conditions, offset journal bearings are adopted for the pinion rotating system and general cylindrical bearing are used for motor part. From the modal analysis, the system is found to be stable as the synchronous rotating frequency does not come across with any whirl natural frequency and, in addition, the critical damping ratio which shows the damping characteristics of the system are positive over the all operating ranges. From these results the authors confirm the vibration stability of the rotor-bearing system suggested in this study.

  • Design and performance evaluation of a spindle system which was composed of a grinding spindle and a regulating spindle for the centerless grinding of ferrule were performed in this paper. Layout and details of spindle system were designed and hydrostatic bearings for spindles were also designed. Prototype of spindle system was developed and its availabilities to machine the ferrule were discussed using the experimental results on the spindle stiffness of each spindle, loop stiffness, rotational accuracy and thermal characteristics. Loop stiffness of the spindle system was $130\;N/{\mu}m$, which was enough to machine the ferrule. Rotational accuracies of each spindle were about $0.2{\mu}m$ at the primary speed of 2,300 rpm(grinding spindle) and 300 rpm(regulating spindle). Temperature rises at the same speed were about $4.4\~4.7^{\circ}C$ in the case of grinding spindle and $1.8^{\circ}C$ in the case of regulating spindle, which agreed well with the designed value. From these results, it was estimated that the prototype of spindle system had enough performances for the centerless grinding machine to machine the ferrule.

  • The ultimate goal of radiation treatment is to use enough radiation dosage in order to examine a tumor while protecting normal tissue. Respiratory guided radiotherapy is being clinically implemented to examine a given stabilized area in order to compensate for the problems of patient breathing. This study investigates the effects of breathing movements on 40 patients with liver cancer through the actual radiation therapy plan using 4D-CT and respiratory guided radiotherapy using RPM. Using a commercial RPM respiratory gating system 4D-CT, we acquired 4D CT on multislice helical CT scanners that use different approaches to 4D CT image reconstruction. The results from analyzing forty patients according to age and direction showed no relationship between gender and transition change. The mean left-right, anteroposterior, and craniocaudal total movements were $3.19{\pm}1.29$, $5.44{\pm}2.07$, and $12.54{\pm}4.70$ mm, respectively. Changes were the largest with CC directions and as patients advanced in age, movements were larger. Therefore, as changes occur in treatment areas because of movements caused from breathing, respiratory gating system is put into operation to revise movement and can increase the radiotherapeutics effects in treating liver cancer.

  • Polycarbonate (PC) and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) blends were prepared using a high shear extruder to investigate their thermal decomposition and mechanical properties with shear rate and shear time. In this experiment, high shear rate, from 1000 to 3000 rpm, in blending process was applied for 10 to 40 sec, respectively. At high shear rate over than 2000 rpm, the initial decomposition temperature was dropped significantly compared to a compounded sample because of thermal decomposition of the blend by high shear. Consequently, high shear processing gave an important effect on the mechanical and thermal properties of the PC/ABS blend. In particular, elongation of the blend decreased significantly with shear rate.

  • This study is a part of the high pressure injection system development on the Turbo GDI engine in order to reduce smoke emission in case of using the low volatile(high DI) fuel which is used as normal gasoline fuel in the US market. Firstly, theoretical approach was done regarding gasoline fuel property, performance, definition of particle matters and its creation as well as problems of the high DI fuel. In this experimental study, 2L Turbo GDI engine was selected and optimized system parameter was inspected by changing fuel, fuel injection mode (single/multiple), fuel pressure, distance between injector tip and combustion chamber, start of injection, intake valve timing in engine dyno at all engine speed range with full load. In case of normal gasoline fuel, opacity was contained within 2% in all conditions. On the other hands, in case of low volatile fuel (high DI fuel), it was confirmed that the opacity was rapidly increased above 5,000 rpm at 14.5 ~ 20 MPa of fuel pressure and there were almost no differences on the opacity(smoke) between 17 MPa and 20 MPa fuel pressure. According to the SOI retard, smoke decrease tendency was observed but intake valve close timing change has almost no impact on the smoke level in this area. Consequently, smoke decrease was observed and 16% at 6000rpm respectively with injector washer ring installed. By removing injector washer to make injector tip closer to the combustion chamber, smoke decrease was observed by 46% at 5,500 rpm, 42% at 6,000 rpm. It is assumed that the fuel injection interaction with cylinder head, piston head, intake and exhaust valve is reduced so that impingement is reduced in local area.

  • This paper presents an implementation of high-dynamic performance of position sensorless motion control system of Reluctance Synchronous Motor(RSM) drives for an industrial servo system with direct torque control(DTC). The problems of high-dynamic performance and maximum efficiency RSM drives controlled by DTC are saturation of stator linkage flux and nonlinear inductance characteristics with various load currents. The accurate estimation of the stator flux and torque are obtained using stator flux observer of which a saturated inductance $L_d$ and $L_q$ can be compensated by adapting from measurable the modulus of the stator current and rotor position. To obtain fast torque response and maximum torque/current with varying load current, the reference command flux is ensured by imposing $I_{ds} = I_{qs}$. This control strategy is proposed to achieve fast response and optimal efficiency for RSM drive. In order to prove rightness of the suggested control algorithm, the actual experiment carried out at $\pm$20 and $\pm$1500 rpm. The developed digitally high-performance motion control system shown good response characteristic of control results and high performance features using 1.0kW RSM which has 2.57 Ld/Lq salient ratio.

  • Reactivity controlled compression ignition (RCCI) combustion is one of dual-fuel combustion systems which can be constructed by early diesel injection during the compression stroke to improve premixing between diesel and air. As a result, RCCI combustion promises low nitrogen oxides (NOx) and smoke emissions comparing to those of general dual-fuel combustion. For this combustion system, to meet the intensified emission regulations without emission after-treatment systems, exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) is necessary to reduce combustion temperature with lean premixed mixture condition. However, since EGR is supplied from the front of turbocharger system, intake pressure and the amount of fresh air supplementation are decreased as increasing EGR rate. For this reason, the effect of various EGR rates on the brake power and thermal efficiency of natural gas/diesel RCCI combustion under two different operating conditions in a 6 L compression ignition engine. Varying EGR rate would influence on the combustion characteristic and boosting condition simultaneously. For the 1,200/29 kW and 1,800 rpm/(lower than) 90 kW conditions, NOx and smoke emissions were controlled lower than the emission regulation of 'Tier-4 final' and the maximum in-cylinder pressure was 160 bar for the indurance of engine system. The results showed that under 1,200 rpm/29 kW condition, there were no changes in brake power and thermal efficiency. On the other hand, under 1,800 rpm condition, brake power and thermal efficieny were decreased from 90 to 65 kW and from 37 to 33 % respectively, because of deceasing intake pressure (from 2.3 to 1.8 bar). Therefore, it is better to supply EGR from the rear of compressor, i.e. low pressure EGR (LP-EGR) system, comparing to high pressure EGR (HP-EGR) for the improvement of RCCI power and thermal efficiency.
