We have numerically simulated the evolution of supernova remnant VRO 42.05.01(G166.0+43) in order to understand its morphology m radio and X-ray observations as well as the dynamical interaction of the supernova remnant with the surrounding interstellar medium. The Radio and ROSAT observations suggest that the unusual morphology of VRO 42.05.01 is caused by a supernova blast wave breaking out of the cloud boundary where the supernova event occurred, and expanding into another cloud across a much less dense and presumably hot cavity. Our numerical results are consistent with the interactions of a passing supernova blast wave with the clouds across the cavity. We discuss the implications of our results on the dynamics of VRO 42.05.01 such as the reverse shocks, the rejuvenation of the hot cavity, and the reflected shocks formed by the reverse shock collisions. We have theoretically mapped the radio continuum(1.4 GHz) and X-ray(0.1~2 keV) morphology which are consistent with the observational ones.
We report results from an analysis of the X-ray archival data on MCG-2-58-22 obtained with Ginga, ROSAT and ASCA. By analyzing both short- and long-term light curves, we find clear time variations, ranging widely from, $\~10^3$ s to more than several years, in the X-ray energy range 0.1 - 10 keV. In addition, a flare is detected in 1991, overlaid on a gradual, secular flux decrease from 1979 to 1993; this flare has a time scale of about 1 year, and the X-ray flux increased by at least a factor of 3. The implications of these observational results are discussed in terms of accretion flow dynamics near a supermassive black hole.
We utilize Sloan Digital Sky Survey DR7 spectroscopic data of ~380 star forming galaxies in the Virgo cluster to investigate their chemical properties depending on the environments. The chemical evolution of galaxies is linked to their star formation histories as well as to the gas interchange in different environments. We derived star formation rate (SFR) and gaseous metallicity (e.g., oxygen abundance) of star forming galaxies. Combining with GALEX ultraviolet photometry and ALFALFA HI 21 cm data, we examine the relations between SFRs, metallicity, and HI deficiency of galaxies in various regions of the Virgo cluster. We also quantify the degree of ram pressure around galaxy using the ROSAT X-ray surface brightness map. We discuss environmental effects on the chemical properties and evolution of star forming galaxies.
Clusters of galaxies provide unique laboratories to study astrophysical processes on large scales, and are also important probes for cosmology. X-ray observations are still the best way to find and characterise clusters. The extended ROSAT-ESO flux-limited X-ray (REFLEX II) galaxy clusters form currently the largest well-defined and tested X-ray galaxy cluster sample, providing a census of the large-scale structure of the Universe out to redshifts of z-0.4. I will describe the properties of the survey and the X-ray luminosity function, which led to our recent cosmological constraints on omegaM-sigma8. They tighten the previous constraints from other X-ray experiments, showing good agreements with those from the Planck clusters, but some tension exists with the Planck CMB constraints. The second part of my talk will concern the structure of the local Universe, and the study of the first X-ray superclusters. The density of the clusters reveals an under-dense region in the nearby Universe, which has an interesting implication for the cosmological parameters. Using the X-ray superclusters, that are constructed with a physically motivated procedure, I will show environmental aspects that X-ray superclusters provide, and compare to cosmological N-body simulations.
We present the far-ultraviolet (FUV) emission line morphologies in the whole region of the supernova remnant G65.3+5.7 using the FIMS/SPEAR data. The morphologies of the C IV ${\lambda}{\lambda}1548$, 1551, $H2{\lambda}1608 $, He II ${\lambda}1640$, and O III] ${\lambda}{\lambda}1661$, 1666 lines appear to correlate clearly with the optical emission line images or the ROSAT X-ray (0.11-0.284 keV) image obtained in some of the previous studies. We found that a foreground dust cloud, resonant scattering, and incompleteness of radiative shocks have made the definite differences between the morphologies of the above FUV emission lines. We also present the FUV spectra and line intensities from a few sub-regions.
In order to identify peculiar X-ray sources, we select 442 sources with no counterparts in other wavelength bands (as of the year 1999) from the ROSAT All-Sky Survey Bright Source Catalog. We cross-correlate this initial list with the NASA/IPAC Extragalactic Database, the USNO and WISE catalogs, and the HEASARC XRAY Master Catalog. Eventually, we are left with four unidentified sources with no counterparts in other wavelength bands. We present these four sources and their X-ray properties in this paper.
Park, Gott, & Choi (2008) found that when a galaxy is located within the virial radius from its closest neighbor and the neighbor is an elliptical, the probability of the galaxy to be an elliptical is very sensitive to the large-scale background density over a few Mpc scales. They suggested that the large-scale dependence can be arise if the temperature of a diffuse hot gas held by elliptical galaxies are higher in higher density environment. In this study, to understand the large-scale environment affects the X-ray properties of individual galaxies, we investigated the dependence of the X-ray luminosities of the elliptical galaxies on the large-scale environment using X-ray and optical data which we selected from the ROSAT All-Sky Survey and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7. To exclude galaxies embedded in an intra-group/cluster medium which could enhance their observed X-ray luminosity, we used isolated elliptical galaxies.
Observations with EUVE, ROSAT, and BeepoSAX have shown that some clusters of galaxies produce intense EUV emission. These findings have produced considerable interest; over 100 papers have been published on this topic in the refereed literature. A notable suggestion as to the source of this radiation is that it is a 'warm' (106 K) intracluster medium which, if present, would constitute the major baryonic component of the universe. A more recent variation of this theme is that this material is 'warm-hot' intergalactic material condensing onto clusters. Alternatively, inverse Compton scattering of low energy cosmic rays against cosmic microwave background photons has been proposed as the source of this emission. Various origins of these particles have been posited, including an old (${\~}$Giga year) population of cluster cosmic rays; particles associated with relativistic jets in the cluster; and cascading particles produced by shocks from sub-cluster merging. The observational situation has been quite uncertain with many reports of detections which have been subsequently contradicted by analyses carried out by other groups. Evidence supporting a thermal and a non-thermal origin has been reported. The existing EUV, FUV, and optical data will be briefly reviewed and clarified. Direct observational evidence from a number of different satellites now rules out a thermal origin for this radiation. A new examination of subtle details of the EUV data suggests a new source mechanism: inverse Compton scattered emission from secondary electrons in the cluster. This suggestion will be discussed in the context of the data.
