This study is the primary study for analyzing the classifying characteristics of river wetlands in Korea and China. It is the first step for constructing the wetlands inventories and establishing the wetland conservation strategies in North-Eastern Asia. The case study sites are Han-river which is the representative river of Korea and Tu-men river which is flowing on the borderline of 3 nations, China, North Korea and Russia. The results are as follows : 1. The types of wetlands of Han-river in Korea and Tumen-river in China were classified by the methods of Koo(2002) which is focused on the topography and hydrology and Zhu(2002) which is emphasized the vegetation and habitats. 2. There are three features which are hydrology, topography and soil cover, and vegetation to classify the wetlands into each types. 3. According to the two wetland types by Koo and Zhu, classification system, wetlands in the case study area(Han river and Duman river) were classified by types. 4. In Koo's classifying system(2002), lots of Riverine, Lacustrins and Flat wetlands are found because the topographical and hydrological features are emphasized. On the contrary in Zhu's system(2002), there are lots of Palustrine wetlands because of emphasizing the vegetation. 5. By the topographic and geological characteristics of each sites, there are more wetland types in the lower Tumen river.
The purpose of this study was to investigate how the landscape characteristics and the physical factors of landscape would affect the preference for the Gapcheon in Daejeon Metropolitan City. The Gapcheon was divided in three sections of the outskirts, Expopark areas, and residential complexes. After selecting seven landscape points where the sections could be expressed best, photographs were taken both in the upstream and downstream direction. The questionnaire used to evaluate the river's landscape included 20 items of adverbs that described the form of the river and one item to rate the overall preference. By analyzing the 14 pictures taken, the occupancy rates of the landscape elements in terms of the sky, river, vegetation of the river, mountain, and artificial structures. Image factor analysis was conducted for each of the sections in order to analyze the landscape characteristics of the Gapcheon, and then regression analysis was conducted in order to analyze the relationships among the physical factors influencing the preference of the landscapes. The results were as follows : Factors that compose the visual characters of urban river were classified be the aesthetic factor, the emotional factor and the situation factor. These 3 factors showed a 65.8% total variance. The river landscape with the biggest preference was the one from the Daedeok Grand Bridge as the occupancy area of the mountain, sky, and river was large and distributed evenly and the vegetation of the river was in a good harmony with the surroundings. After carrying out regression analysis to examine the relationships between the visual preference of Gapcheon and the physical factors of landscape(the sky, river, vegetation of the river, mountain, and artificial structure), the following regressions model was made : PRE=5.906+0.017(river)-0.053(artificial structure)-0.060(vegetation of the river) (R-square=0.48).
The purpose of this study was to propose an efficient management plan for purchased land considering the hydrological, watershed characteristics and ecological functions of the target land and surrounding area based on the result of monitoring the water quality improvement effect obtained by purchasing the land in the watershed area in the Geum river system. For this purpose, this study investigated through literature review, and examined ways to apply them to this research by deriving implications from a comprehensive analysis of previous research cases. After that, the components of assessment were derived to evaluate the ecological function of the purchase land, and the ecological function evaluation model for each land and area was proposed. In order to select purchase and restoration priorities of the land, this study analyzed the ecological status of the purchased land in main watersheds and tributaries using Arc GIS ver 10.1. Through this, a process to select restoration priorities was developed. And this study constructed the integrated management process with proposing a mid - to long - term plan by integrating the purchased land valuation and restoration priority selection process. Based on this process, this study suggested an effective management plan for purchased land through the integrated ecological management system of lands purchased. It can be used systematically in appraisal valuation, land purchase system, restoration project, and follow-up management of land purchase.
This study aims at establishing an ecological planning for road construction. which is considered to be a main cause of damage to the natural environment in Korea. This study focuses on the Pyungtak-Eumsung Highway development project. It considers the ecological factors and status of the site and its surrounding area. The study site is a four-way highway with a width of 23.4m and a length of 5.7km that spans from Hyungok-ri, Anseong City, Kyeonggi Province to Jukhyun-ri, Jincheon-gun, Chungbuk Province. The objective of the plan is "the establishment of an eco-road in harmony with nature." The plan is divided into five detailed goals: 1) restoration of river morphology and ecosystem through ecological planning; 2) establishment of wet biotopes; 3) construction of ecological corridors; 4) restoration of damaged forest ecosystems; and 5) ecological restoration of the roadside slopes that are linked with the surrounding forest. A master plan has been developed based on the detailed goals. The master plan involves: 1) establishment of a natural river, wet biotopes, and ecological corridors that facilitate the movement of amphibians, wild fowls, mammalians and fish; 2) development of a planting plan for the visitor center, the tunnel entrance, and soundproof banks; and 3) the presentation of a planting model for restoring roadside slopes that are connected to the surrounding forest. The eco-road plan needs to entail ecological conservation and restoration plans. In addition, a monitoring plan for ecological corridors and habitats should be included in the comprehensive plans, along with the continuous development of environmentally friendly technologies.
Mountain streams, which are major components of an entire river network, play an important role as the source of water, sediment, coarse and fine organic matter, and nutrients for lowland rivers. Therefore, dynamics and downstream linkages of each compartment of the mountain stream can be essential for watershed management in catchment scale. The dynamics and downstream linkages are understood as a development of step-pool sequences along a river course. Recently, stream restoration after flooding event often employ the development of step-pool sequences in the world. In this paper, we 1) examined the geomorphic characteristics and the role of step-pool sequences in steep mountain streams by reviewing the results of past studies, and 2) introduced the case studies of stream restoration using step-pool sequences, and finally 3) addressed design methods considering geometry and stability of artificial step-pool sequences for stream restoration. Step-pool sequences play an important role not only as roughness with energy dissipation but also as heterogeneity of stream feature for aquatic habitat. Step-pool sequences, even if they are constructed artificially along a stream, may be effective for small stream restoration considering eco-friendly torrent controls. So far the artificial step-pool sequences were employed for mountainous streams, but those would be applied to urban stream.
This study is for deriving an evaluation system which fits to the domestic urban river. For this, two times of Delphi survey was conducted to various experts who are eminent for ecology, urban design, governance, landscape architecture, hydrology. The purpose was for analysing validity and getting extra opinion of evaluation items which were preferentially have chosen. Reflecting $1^{st}$ survey's opinions as changing the word or explaining more details, the second survey was conducted, In this time, all evaluation items were analysed as valid and experts agreed with that. In conclusion, the evaluation items, "Amenity", "Biodiversity", "Ecosystem service", "Governance", "Management", which are for evaluating domestic urban river environment were derived.
