스크러버 내 충진층에서의 압력강하 특성에 관한 실험적 연구 (Experiments for Pressure Drop of Scrubbing Layer in a Scrubber System )

  • According to the regulation on the pollution of the marine environment, SOx emission from ships has to be reduced. A SOx scrubbing system installed in a funnel of a ship is considered in order to reduce SOx emission. A scrubbing layer with a porous material is present in the funnel to increase the contact area between exhaust gas and water. In this study, experiments on the pressure drop characteristics in the scrubbing layer are conducted to investigate the effect of the scrubber on the engine load. The pressure drop according to flow rate of air instead of exhaust gas was measured for fillers such as sphere, pall ring and saddle in the scrubbing layer. First of all, porosity is experimentally measured for the three types of filler and it is confirmed that the porosity of the saddle-type filler was the largest. The pressure drop according to the change in air flow rate was measured for the three types of fillers in the scrubbing layer. As a result, the pressure drop was the smallest in the scrubbing layer with the saddle-type filler which has the largest porosity. In addition, the effect of spraying water flowing counter flow against air flow is experimentally examined. It is known that the pressure drop is increased because the air flow space is reduced when water is sprayed. In the case of the saddle, the pressure drop is about 1.5 to 2 times greater than that when only air flows at the optimum exhaust gas-water injection ratio.

QTL Identification for Slow Wilting and High Moisture Contents in Soybean (Glycine max [L.]) and Arduino-Based High-Throughput Phenotyping for Drought Tolerance

  • Drought becomes frequent and severe because of continuous global warming, leading to a significant loss of crop yield. In soybean (Glycine max [L.]), most of quantitative trait loci (QTLs) analyses for drought tolerance have conducted by investigating yield changes under water-restricted conditions at the reproductive stages. More recently, the necessity of QTL studies to use physiological indices responding to drought at the early growth stages besides the reproductive ones has arisen due to the unpredictable and prevalent occurrence of drought throughout the soybean growing season. In this study, we thus identified QTLs conferring wilting scores and moisture contents of soybean subjected to drought stress in the early vegetative stage using an recombinant inbred line (RIL) population derived from a cross between Taekwang (drought-sensitive) and SS2-2 (drought-tolerant). For the two traits, the same major QTL was located on chromosome 10, accounting for up to 11.5% of phenotypic variance explained with LOD score of 12.5. This QTL overlaps with a reported QTL for the limited transpiration trait in soybean and harbors an ortholog of the Arabidopsis ABA and drought-induced RING-D UF1117 gene. Meanwhile, one of important features of plant drought tolerance is their ability to limit transpiration rates under high vapor pressure deficiency in response to mitigate water loss. However, monitoring their transpiration rates is time-consuming and laborious. Therefore, only a few population-level studies regarding transpiration rates under the drought condition have been reported so far. Via employing an Arduino-based platform, for the reasons addressed, we are measuring and recording total pot weights of soybean plants every hour from the 1st day after water restriction to the days when the half of the RILs exhibited permanent tissue damage in at least one trifoliate. Gradual decrease in moisture of soil in pots as time passes refers increase in the severity of drought stress. By tracking changes in the total pot weights of soybean plants, we will infer transpiration rates of the mapping parents and their RILs according to different levels of VPD and drought stress. The profile of transpiration rates from different levels of severity in the stresses facilitates a better understanding of relationship between transpiration-related features, such as limited maximum transpiration rates, to water saving performances, as well as those to other drought-responsive phenotypes. Our findings will provide primary insights on drought tolerance mechanisms in soybean and useful resources for improvement of soybean varieties tolerant to drought stress.

운룡주(雲龍柱) 보물 앙부일구의 특성과 제작 기술 (Characteristics and Manufacturing Technology of the Angbuilgu Treasure with Plate Pillars Decorated with a Dragon in Clouds)

  • 본 연구는 2022년에 새롭게 보물로 지정된 앙부일구의 재질과 외형적 특징을 분석하였다. 국립고궁박물관, 국립경주박물관과 성신여자대학교박물관의 세 기관에서 소장하고 있는 보물 앙부일구는 그 재질, 규격, 형태(외형), 은상감 등 제작기법이 쌍둥이처럼 비슷하다. 이 세 점의 앙부일구은 구리: 아연: 납이 90.6: 6.0: 1.8의 비율인 황동으로 제작되어 있다. 이 성분비는 82.2: 3.7: 11.8의 조성비를 가지고 있는 보물 제845호 앙부일구와 분명한 차이를 보인다. 새 보물 앙부일구에서 반구의 받침부분은 용의 문양이 수직기둥에 그려지고 구름의 문양이 기둥의 날개를 형성하여, 반구 지평환에 각각 리벳과 은땜으로 결합되어 있다. 이러한 운룡주(雲龍柱)의 문양은 조선 후기 제작된 다양한 앙부일구 받침대 중에서도 가장 뛰어난 조형미를 보여주고 있다. 앙부일구에 새겨진 북극고도는 1713년 이후에 제작되었음을 알 수 있는데, 실제 제작은 19세기 진주 강씨 앙부일구 전문제작자의 활동 시기에 근접할 것으로 추정된다. 본 연구가 2022년 지정 보물 앙부일구의 재질과 외형적 특징을 분석함으로써 근대 과학기기의 과학기술사적 고찰을 견인할 수 있기를 기대한다.

kV X선 기반 영상유도방사선치료의 추가 피폭선량에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Additional Radiation Exposure Dose of kV X-ray Based Image Guided Radiotherapy)

  • 본 연구는 공간 해상력과 대조도가 우수한 kV X선 기반 OBI (On-Board Imager)와 CBCT (Cone-Beam CT)를 이용한 치료 부위별 추가 선량을 측정하고 영상유도방사선치료의 방사선 관리 측면의 적절성과 안정성을 평가하고자 한다. 실험 대상은 선형가속장치(Clinac IX)에 부착된 OBI와 CBCT, 링 모양의 Halcyon CBCT를 치료 부위별 방사선 촬영 조건으로 조사하여 동중심의 선량을 이온 챔버로 측정하였다. OBI의 1회 분할 피폭선량은 머리 부위 0.77 mGy, 흉부 3.04 mGy, 골반 부위 7.19 mGy로 계측되었다. Clinac IX CBCT와 Halcyon CBCT 두 장비의 피폭선량은 골반 부위에서는 두 장치의 피폭선량이 70.04 mGy, 70.45 mGy로 비슷하게 계측되었다. 흉부 CBCT에서는 Clinac IX 흡수선량(70.05 mGy)이 Halcyon 흡수선량(21.01 mGy)보다 높게 나타났다. 머리 부위에서도 Clinac IX 흡수선량(9.08 mGy) Halcyon의 흡수선량(5.44 mGy)보다 높게 나타났다. kV X선 기반 영상유도방사선치료는 광전흡수에 의한 추가 피폭선량이 치료 부위 전체 체적에 영향을 줄 수 있으며 주의가 필요하다.

Theoretical analysis of erosion degradation and safety assessment of submarine shield tunnel segment based on ion erosion

  • To evaluate the safety status of deteriorated segments in a submarine shield tunnel during its service life, a seepage model was established based on a cross-sea shield tunnel project. This model was used to study the migration patterns of erosive ions within the shield segments. Based on these laws, the degree of deterioration of the segments was determined. Using the derived analytical solution, the internal forces within the segments were calculated. Lastly, by applying the formula for calculating safety factors, the variation trends in the safety factors of segments with different degrees of deterioration were obtained. The findings demonstrate that corrosive seawater presents the evolution characteristics of continuous seepage from the outside to the inside of the tunnel. The nearby seepage field shows locally concentrated characteristics when there is leakage at the joint, which causes the seepage field's depth and scope to significantly increase. The chlorine ion content decreases gradually with the increase of the distance from the outer surface of the tunnel. The penetration of erosion ions in the segment is facilitated by the presence of water pressure. The ion content of the entire ring segment lining structure is related in the following order: vault < haunch < springing. The difference in the segment's rate of increase in chlorine ion content decreases as service time increases. Based on the analytical solution calculation, the segment's safety factor drops more when the joint leaks than when its intact, and the change rate between the two states exhibits a general downward trend. The safety factor shows a similar change rule at different water depths and continuously decreases at the same segment position as the water depth increases. The three phases of "sudden drop-rise-stability" are represented by a "spoon-shaped" change rule on the safety factor's change curve. The issue of the poor applicability of indicators in earlier studies is resolved by the analytical solution, which only requires determining the loss degree of the segment lining's effective bearing thickness to calculate the safety factor of any cross-section of the shield tunnel. The analytical solution's computation results, however, have some safety margins and are cautious. The process of establishing the evaluation model indicates that the secondary lining made of molded concrete can also have its safety status assessed using the analytical solution. It is very important for the safe operation of the tunnel and the safety of people's property and has a wide range of applications.

국내 관엽식물 및 작물재배지의 식물기생선충 발생 조사 (Occurrence of Plant-Parasitic Nematodes on Ornamental Foliage Plants, Citrus Orchards, and Tea Plantations in Korea)

  • 정서적 안정과 휴식에 효과적이며, 공기 정화 등 기능성을 가진 관엽식물에 대한 수요가 증가하고 있으나, 관엽식물에 피해를 유발할 수 있는 식물기생선충에 대한 연구는 전무한 실정이다. 본 연구는 국내 판매되고 있는 관엽식물에서 발생하는 식물기생선충의 검출 여부와 밀도를 파악하고자 관엽식물과 작물재배지에 대해 2022년 7월부터 12월까지 모니터링을 수행하였다. 415개의 관엽식물과 국내 24개 차나무 및 22개 감귤재배지의 식물기생선충을 조사하였다. 관엽식물 내 식물기생선충 조사 결과, 뿌리썩이선충이 가장 많이 검출되었으며, 잎선충, 뿌리혹선충, 침선충이 확인되었다. 차나무재배지에서는 나선선충, 씨스트선충, 뿌리혹선충, 뿌리썩이선충이 검출되었고, 감귤재배지에서는 감귤선충, 주름선충, 뿌리썩이선충, 뿌리혹선충 등이 검출되었다. 관엽식물, 차나무 및 감귤 재배지에서 뿌리썩이선충이 가장 우려되는 식물기생선충이었으나, 뿌리혹선충, 씨스트선충이 일부 검출되어 피해가 우려되므로 온탕침법, 유기농업자재의 사용, 잡초제거 등 식물기생선충의 방제 방법을 재배에 적용하여야 할 것이다.

A Mixture of Morus alba and Angelica keiskei Leaf Extracts Improves Muscle Atrophy by Activating the PI3K/Akt/mTOR Signaling Pathway and Inhibiting FoxO3a In Vitro and In Vivo

  • Muscle atrophy, which is defined as a decrease in muscle mass and strength, is caused by an imbalance between the anabolism and catabolism of muscle proteins. Thus, modulating the homeostasis between muscle protein synthesis and degradation represents an efficient treatment approach for this condition. In the present study, the protective effects against muscle atrophy of ethanol extracts of Morus alba L. (MA) and Angelica keiskei Koidz. (AK) leaves and their mixtures (MIX) were evaluated in vitro and in vivo. Our results showed that MIX increased 5-aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide ribonucleotide-induced C2C12 myotube thinning, and enhanced soleus and gastrocnemius muscle thickness compared to each extract alone in dexamethasone-induced muscle atrophy Sprague Dawley rats. In addition, although MA and AK substantially improved grip strength and histological changes for dexamethasone-induced muscle atrophy in vivo, the efficacy was superior in the MIX-treated group. Moreover, MIX further increased the expression levels of myogenic factors (MyoD and myogenin) and decreased the expression levels of E3 ubiquitin ligases (atrogin-1 and muscle-specific RING finger protein-1) in vitro and in vivo compared to the MA- and AK-alone treatment groups. Furthermore, MIX increased the levels of phosphorylated phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K), protein kinase B (Akt), and mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) that were reduced by dexamethasone, and downregulated the expression of forkhead box O3 (FoxO3a) induced by dexamethasone. These results suggest that MIX has a protective effect against muscle atrophy by enhancing muscle protein anabolism through the activation of the PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling pathway and attenuating catabolism through the inhibition of FoxO3a.

Prognostic Value of Coronary CT Angiography for Predicting Poor Cardiac Outcome in Stroke Patients without Known Cardiac Disease or Chest Pain: The Assessment of Coronary Artery Disease in Stroke Patients Study

  • Objective: To assess the incremental prognostic value of coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) in comparison to a clinical risk model (Framingham risk score, FRS) and coronary artery calcium score (CACS) for future cardiac events in ischemic stroke patients without chest pain. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study included 1418 patients with acute stroke who had no previous cardiac disease and underwent CCTA, including CACS. Stenosis degree and plaque types (high-risk, non-calcified, mixed, or calcified plaques) were assessed as CCTA variables. High-risk plaque was defined when at least two of the following characteristics were observed: low-density plaque, positive remodeling, spotty calcification, or napkin-ring sign. We compared the incremental prognostic value of CCTA for major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) over CACS and FRS. Results: The prevalence of any plaque and obstructive coronary artery disease (CAD) (stenosis ≥ 50%) were 70.7% and 30.2%, respectively. During the median follow-up period of 48 months, 108 patients (7.6%) experienced MACE. Increasing FRS, CACS, and stenosis degree were positively associated with MACE (all p < 0.05). Patients with high-risk plaque type showed the highest incidence of MACE, followed by non-calcified, mixed, and calcified plaque, respectively (log-rank p < 0.001). Among the prediction models for MACE, adding stenosis degree to FRS showed better discrimination and risk reclassification compared to FRS or the FRS + CACS model (all p < 0.05). Furthermore, incorporating plaque type in the prediction model significantly improved reclassification (integrated discrimination improvement, 0.08; p = 0.023) and showed the highest discrimination index (C-statistics, 0.85). However, the addition of CACS on CCTA with FRS did not add to the prediction ability for MACE (p > 0.05). Conclusion: Assessment of stenosis degree and plaque type using CCTA provided additional prognostic value over CACS and FRS to risk stratify stroke patients without prior history of CAD better.

동해 울진 연안의 어류 자치어 종조성과 계절변동 (Seasonal Variations in Species Composition of Larval Fish Assemblage in the Coastal Waters off Uljin, East Sea)

  • 본 연구는 동해 울진 연안 10개 정점에서 계절별(2022년 4월, 7월, 10월, 2023년 2월)로 Ring net를 이용하여 채집한 자치어 종조성의 계절변동을 조사하였다. 총 27개 분류군에 속하는 자치어가 채집되었다. 어류 자치어 우점종은 참가자미(Pseudopleuronectes herzensteini), 볼락(Sebastes inermis), 까나리(Ammodytes japonicus), 문치가자미(Pseudopleuronectes yokohamae), 그물코쥐치 (Rudarius ercodes), 청베도라치(Parablennius yatabei)였고 상기 6종은 전체 자치어 현존량의 86.6%를 차지하였다. 자치어 출현종수, 현존량, 다양도지수는 계절에 따라 변하였는데, 출현종수와 현존량은 4월(춘계)에 가장 높았고, 다양도지수는 7월(하계)에 가장 높았다. 조사해역에서 자치어 군집의 계절별 출현양상에 따라 춘계, 하계, 동계 그룹을 구분할 수 있었다. 우점종 중 참가자미는 춘계에 우점하였고, 청베도라치와 그물코쥐치는 하계에 우점하였다. 그리고 볼락, 까나리, 문치가자미는 동계에 현존량이 높았다. 이러한 자치어 군집의 시간적 변동은 계절에 따른 수온 차이에 영향을 받았던 것으로 판단된다. 본 연구 결과는 동해에서 어류 자치어 다양성을 밝히고 연안해역의 산란장 기능을 평가하는 데 기여할 것으로 생각된다.

국내 봉화 송이 자생지 내 균환 유래 토양세균의 송이균사체 생장촉진 효과 (Growth promoting effect on Tricholoma matsutake mycelium by bacteria from fairy Ring in Bonghwa-gun, Korea)

  • 본 연구실에서는 송이의 인공재배 조건 확립을 목표로 세균을 활용한 생장촉진 유도실험을 진행하였으며, 봉화에서 확보한 7 점의 세균에 의한 송이 균사체의 생장촉진 결과를 확인하였다. 생장촉진 효과가 가장 높았던 3 점의 세균 B22_7_B06, B22_7_B07, B22_7_B08은 Paenibacillus 속으로 확인되었다. 그러나 이러한 배양된 송이 균사체의 생장면적 측정 이외에 다양한 방식을 통한 균사체 생장결과 확인 기준이 필요한 실정이며, 이에 향후 확보된 세균들이 모두 그람 양성균인 것에 착안하여 각 세균들로부터 대사산물을 추출한 후 (Eltokhy et al., 2021), 추출한 대사산물을 활용하여 송이 균사체의 세포외 효소활성 변화 정도를 측정하여 보다 체계적인 송이 균사체 생장촉진 데이터를 확보하고자 한다. 더불어 미생물에 의한 송이 균사체 생장촉진 사례 데이터를 지속적으로 축적하여 송이 종류에 따른 미생물의 생장촉진 효과의 다양성을 확보하고 확보된 촉진균으로 부터 추출한 물질이 함유된 영양 배지를 활용하여 송이 인공재배를 위한 생태모방에 기여하고자 한다.
